Glen Powell is using his undeniable charm to put people behind bars in the new trailer for Netflix’s Hit Man. The streaming service released the official trailer for the Richard Linklater-directed film on Thursday, showing Powell as a strait-laced professor with a hidden talent as a fake hit man.
As a part-time, undercover hit man for the New Orleans Police Department, Gary Johnson (Powell) takes on several disguises sporting fake teeth, strawberry bobs, leather trench coats, and three-piece suits to lure in criminals. But he loses focus after meeting client Madison,...

A fun trope of contract killers in movies is the stealthy way the assassin moves about in plain sight while under the guise of another person. This is the trope that Glen Powell‘s new Netflix film, Hit Man, plays on. Powell and Richard Linklater wrote the film, which was inspired by an unbelievable true story. Our own Chris Bumbray felt ecstatic about this movie in his film review from the Toronto International Film Festival, saying, “Notably, despite being a movie about killing, the film is pretty non-violent and charming. If there was ever a feel-good movie to be made about murder-for-hire, this is it.” You can read the rest of his review Here.
Netflix has just released the new trailer for the comedy. The synopsis of the film reads,
“A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits.

"My name is Gary Johnson, and my simple question for you is: who is your hit man?" Netflix has unveiled the main official trailer Hit Man, the hugely loved new "hitman" comedy from Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater. This first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year, with a rapturous premiere where audiences went nuts for (read my full review). It also went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, London and Sundance. From the Oscar-nominated writer / director Richard Linklater, starring the great Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a "hit man" meets his match with a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Co-written by Linklater & Powell and inspired by a true story, it's a cleverly existential comedy about identity. Hit Man arrives on Netflix in June, hopefully with a proper theatrical debut first before it's streaming.

Glen Powell is attached to star in Chad Powers, which has just been given a series order by Hulu. Powell co-created the half-hour comedy with Michael Waldron, and both will serve as writers and executive producers.
The Chad Powers character was introduced in a sketch that aired on ESPN+’s Eli’s Places series. Eli Manning will be involved as an executive producer along with Omaha Productions’ Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Ben Brown, and ESPN.
“We’re both diehard college football fans. When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world. We’re excited to be part of this team, and can’t wait to get Chad in the game. Think fast, run fast,” said Powell and Waldron.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) reunites with filmmaker Richard Linklater for Netflix’s Hit Man, a dark comedy so weird it’s hard to believe it’s inspired by a true story. One of the most exciting movie releases of 2024 just got its first trailer. You’re not gone until you’re gone. At least that’s what I told people when they realized it took eight seasons for “Fear the Walking Dead” to wrap up.
“Fear” bested predictions and became one of the longest-running television spin-offs currently on air. While ratings dwindled and characters were written off over the years, it maintained a decent cult following — some tuning in for Alycia Debnam-Carey, who came into her own as an actress on the show following “The 100,” while others begrudgingly watched to keep up with the “Walking Dead” universe, after characters like Morgan (Lennie James), Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Sherry (Christine Evangelista) were transferred from the original series.
A key to its success, “Fear” never shied away from a soft reboot. Every season tackled a new approach to its storytelling, sometimes in the span of a few episodes. Early seasons of “Fear” felt migratory even,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of the series finale of Fear the Walking Dead, which aired tonight on AMC.
“At first it was written to be very, flowery and beautiful and wonderful hugs and loving,” reveals Colman Domingo of the final partings in tonight’s Fear the Walking Dead series finale. “That’s just not the truth of our characters,” the Emmy-winning actor adds of why that was not the ending viewers saw with his often devious Victor Strand, Kim Dickens’ Madison Clark or Rubén Blades’ Daniel Salazar.
“We were very strong, very strong-willed characters, and we should end in a very complex way.”
After eight seasons, a real-life global pandemic that made the Twd spinoff seem almost documentary in tone, and a vast expansion of the zombie apocalypse universe on AMC, the Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson-created series certainly concluded in a very emotionally complex way Sunday.

With Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, the charismatic Glen Powell has been offered a plum opportunity to shape his image into something more complicated and often poignant. Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a philosophy professor at the University of New Orleans who moonlights as a pretend hitman in sting operations. That premise may seem far-fetched, but the script gives a logical pathway for Johnson’s nerdy tech hobby to seem appealing to the Nola police department’s surveillance teams. And, also, this story mostly really happened.
What remains unbelievable, especially to Gary’s surveillance teammates, is just how good he is at playing a seasoned contract killer. Gary develops disguises tailored to his mark’s idea of a hitman, inhabits that role until the incriminating cash is exchanged, then settles down at home with his cats Id and Ego—turns out, he teaches psychology classes as well—and a microwaveable meal.

Netflix has made a big splash at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival by acquiring the streaming rights of Richard Linklater’s latest film ‘Hit Man’ for a staggering 20 million Usd. The action comedy, which stars Glen Powell as a professional killer who is actually an undercover agent, has been praised by critics and audiences alike for its witty script, thrilling action sequences, and stellar performances.
‘Hit Man’ follows the adventures of Gary Johnson, a hit man who takes assignments from various clients and executes them with precision and skill. However, he is not really a cold-blooded killer, but a secret agent who works for the police. He uses his cover as a hit man to infiltrate criminal organizations and bring them down from within. Things get complicated when he tries to save a woman from her abusive husband and ends up in a dangerous situation.

Netflix has acquired Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s buzzy “Hit Man,” TheWrap has learned. With a reported payout of $20 million, this marks the second major buy for the streaming giant amid this year’s Venice and Toronto film festivals following their reported $11 million acquisition of Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour.”
“Hit Man” stars Powell, who co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater based on a Skip Hollandsworth-penned “Texas Monthly” article. The film concerns an alleged master assassin who is secretly working for the cops. Adria Arjona plays an apparently battered wife who inspires enough sympathy from the faux killer to make him consider doing the job for real.
Ben Croll wrote in his review for TheWrap that the picture “is a deliriously entertaining star vehicle, a throwback to the low-concept, high-reward studio crowd-pleasers built around a comic persona and designed to showcase a gifted performer’s range.”

Exclusive: Netflix closed a $20 million deal on Hit Man, making the biggest deal at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and of the year for that matter. After the Richard Linklater-directed noir comic thriller debuted to raves at Venice, the film was expected to fetch the biggest deal of the fall festivals so far. Hit Man did not disappoint. Hit Man stars Top Gun Maverick’s Glen Powell and Adria Arjona (Andor) playing the most unlikely romantic partners, in performances that will boost each of their careers. Especially Powell, who co-wrote with Linklater what will be a major star turn for him. Netflix got US, UK, Australia/New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. There is also a theatrical component to the deal, I’ve heard.

Both films have received positive reviews from critics and audiences, but have not secured any deals yet.
Francis Ford Coppola’s film, Megalopolis, is an epic science fiction drama that follows an architect who wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia after a devastating disaster. The film features an ensemble cast, including Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito and D. B. Sweeney. Coppola wrote the screenplay in the 1980s and has been trying to make the film for decades. One night in 2016, I was working at a small movie theater in Austin, Texas, when a man leaned over the cash register and shook my hand. “Thanks for tonight,” he gleamed. He had kind eyes and a warm smile. All I’d done was show up for my shift, so I nodded back and forgot about it. There was some fundraiser going on. Minutes later, a co-worker grabbed me: “You just shook the hand of a murderer.”
It wasn’t Richard Linklater––he’s clean––but it was one of his characters, this time in real life: Bernie Tiede. “Murderer” might not be the fairest label for Bernie, but the East Texas saint-turned-sinner is the poster child for the many sweet, chatty men that undergo severe change across Linklater’s filmography. He might also be the closest character to the newest: Gary Johnson. Or should we call him Ron?

Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” received a spirited five-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night, as the director handed out high fives.
The action comedy, which stars Glen Powell, received cheers from the beginning, with the crowd clapping throughout the film during various scenes.
During the standing ovation, Linklater looked overwhelmed by the applause, mouthing “thank you so much” and holding his hand to his heart. After the applause lasted several minutes, Linklater exchanged high fives with those near him, including his partner Christina Harrison and their daughter.
Linklater spoke at the film’s Venice press conference about working so closely with Powell on “Hit Man,” saying, “We never quit working on this movie. We worked all weekend, we worked all night. We were shooting in New Orleans and we never went out. I think we went out to eat once.”

It was 22 years ago that Skip Hollandsworth wrote a Texas Monthly article about Gary Johnson, a school teacher who moonlights as a hit man who doesn’t kill people. Now if that doesn’t sound like the formula for a hit movie, you may understand why it has taken so long for Gary’s story to make it to the silver screen — so long in fact that its subject passed away before he could hit the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival, where the film is having its world premiere tonight.
Nevertheless, Glen Powell never forgot the story and has teamed with Richard Linklater to finally tell it, though it is only “loosely” based on the original article. Certain details in the screenplay co-written by Linklater and Powell are made up, and those are the details that actually help make this a hilarious winner, as well as perhaps Linklater...

Richard Linklater’s features since his masterwork Boyhood (2014) — Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood, Where’d You Go, Bernadette, Last Flag Flying, and Everybody Wants Some!! — have been a decidedly mixed bag, but Hit Man finds him having a blast with a sexy black comedy boasting a sly streak of poignancy. Redoubtable supporting player Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) here offers a career-boosting, range-flaunting turn as a geeky academic who stumbles into doing a very specific kind of undercover work for the police: posing as, per the title, a hit man.
But when he falls for Adria Arjona’s saucy semi-fatale femme — who at one point tries to hire him to kill her husband — farcical maneuvers are required to keep both of them out of trouble. Given the chemistry between the two leads that could restart a dormant nuclear power plant, viewers are likely to come away sated with...

Richard Linklater, the acclaimed director of Boyhood and Before Sunrise, is back with a new film that promises to be a thrilling and hilarious ride. Hit Man, which is based on a true story, stars Glen Powell as an undercover cop who poses as a hit man to catch criminals. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Fear The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 2, “Blue Jay.”] Did Fear The Walking Dead really just do that? Furthermore, June’s pain isn’t just psychological; she’s now lost a finger, too, in retribution for her years spent cutting off Collectors’ fingers. We chatted with Elfman about that jaw-dropping episode ending, how much more devastation June can take, and what the deal was with that jar of fingers. The long goodbye has begun: Fear the Walking Dead dropped a trailer for the eighth and final season of the AMC prequel.
To help promote the upcoming season, co-showrunner Ian Goldberg and Executive Producer Michael Satrazemis — together with cast members Kim Dickens, Jenna Elfman and Christine Evangelista –appeared at WonderCon today. The biggest scoop about the season 8 was revealed by Goldberg, who said it will include a seven-year time jump.
Goldberg reflected on the season ending and enduring fanbase for the series. “It feels surreal; it’s amazing to be making season 8 of this show, and only because, at this point, everybody knows that this will be our final season,” Goldberg said. “Thank you so much; you are the best fans in the world, we made this show for you, and we’re so honored that we’ve been able to tell these stories for such a long time.”

Last month, AMC announced that the eighth season of Fear the Walking Dead, which is set to begin airing on May 14th, will be the final season. Now cinematographer David Morrison has taken to Instagram to mark the fact that filming is underway on the series finale. Morrison said, “Been looking forward to this for a while. Years in the making. Let’s do this!” The series finale is being directed by Michael E. Satrazemis, a franchise regular who has directed seventeen episodes of The Walking Dead, twenty episodes of Fear the Walking Dead, and three episodes of Tales of the Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead wrapped up its eleven season run on AMC last year, so it seems fitting that Fear the Walking Dead, its first companion series, is following its example and wrapping up as well. Especially since there are a bunch of new spin-offs to look forward...
