If we didn't know better, one would think Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Season 1 Episode 9's shocking ending was written in direct response to the current state of civil unrest and the anti-racist movement sweeping the world.

But, sadly, the fact is that this was all scripted and filmed long before George Floyd's murder sparked the protests that dominated the news lately.

And, even more tragically, the lynching of Diego, a young Mexican-American man secretly coerced by police into confessing to the murders of an affluent white family and a policeman, wouldn't have even made the front page in 1938. If it even made it into the papers.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 9

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 9, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” is, for the most part, a celebration, but not because of any anti-fascist resistance or solved crime. Last week’s cat and mouse game didn’t catch itself a canary. Tonight’s episode opens where last week’s left off. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) are licking their wounds after a machine gun ambush sidetracked their takedown. Michener is most pissed about the loss of his classic V-12 car and he’s running on all pistons.

The standoff between Michener and Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann) is a joy to behold. There are so many layers to it, beyond the enormously satisfying dialogue. Michener’s a Jew in a restricted club, which has to be fun for Lane to play going in.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 8, “Hide and Seek,” begins a new cat and mouse game. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) cleared the police docket by pinning a series of murders on one suspect, Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) and were given a week’s paid leave as a thank you. But the two cops are having a devil of a time filling their idle hours.

Last week’s episode, “Maria and the Beast,” ended with a change of plans. Lewis called in his favor and enlisted Tiago in his understaffed and unfunded war against Nazis in Los Angeles. But the takedown became a stakeout when the two cops saw other major players sitting down to dinner with the first wave of the Third Reich, Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann). Billed as "a spiritual descendent" of the original Penny Dreadful series which ran from 2014-2016, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Season 1 Episode 1 introduces a supernatural pantheon of beings in a hauntingly familiar context, pre-wwii America.

This being the series premiere -- and me being a huge fan of the original series -- it's hard not to spend a lot of time comparing the two.

Like its predecessor, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels boasts an impressive cast, lush cinematography, and an ambitious narrative.

However, where the original played on the well-known characters of classic gothic and horror literature -- Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, the Wolf-Man -- this new incarnation is building somethng novel and more complex around the figure of Santa Muerte, the Angel of Holy Death.

Tiago: Santa Muerte is the Angel of Holy Death. She's the one who brings dead people to Heaven.

Lewis: Oh, she's the one who does that.

Shadowhunters may have come to a bittersweet conclusion, but another one of its actors had landed a new TV role.

Dominic Sherwood, who played Jace on the recently canceled Freeform drama, has joined the cast of Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

He is one of six new additions, joining the series alongside Adam Rodriguez, Michael Gladis, Lorenza Izzo, Thomas Kretschman, and Ethan Peck.

The new series is set in 1938 Los Angeles, and focuses on Det. Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto), who becomes embroiled in an epic story following a murder that shocks the city.

It quickly paves the way for Tiago and his family “grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart,” according to the official logline.

Sherwood will play Kurt, the chauffer and bodyguard for Richard Goss (Kretschmann). There's more to Kurt than meets the eye: an unexpected depth and surprising background.

“Mad Men” veteran Michael Gladis will join the spinoff series “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” as a ruthless politician, while “The Green Inferno” actress Lorenza Izzo will join the cast as a character known as the Angel of Holy Death.

Gladis will be a series regular, while Izzo will recur on the show, along with several other actors who joined the cast Tuesday. Adam Rodriguez (“CSI: Miami”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Avengers: Age of Ultron”) and Dominic Sherwood (“Shadowhunters”) and Ethan Peck (“Star Trek: Discovery”) will all appear in multiple episodes. “Game of Thrones” veteran Natalie Dormer was previously announced as a star of the series.

Michael Gladis has joined the show as a series regular, while Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, and Dominic Sherwood will appear in recurring roles. Ethan Peck will guest star in multiple episodes. The six join previously announced cast members Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Adriana Barraza, Rory Kinnear, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves, Nathan Lane, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, and Lin Shaye.

Welsh filmmakers Andrew Jones and James Plumb re-team once more following Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection, for yet another film that shares it moniker with a previous film – this time the 1972 film starring John Carradine and Mary Woronov, Silent Night Bloody Night. North Bank Entertainment a UK production company will produce a British version to the original 1968 Night of the Living Dead by George Romero. The film is slated for a 2012 release date in the UK.
