Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, now on Netflix in eight episodes is everything that Bhansali has come to be associated with, then some more. It is a feast for the eyes and soul with a gallery of female actors giving their best to every shot. At times the best of these actresses is not good enough. One of the lead actresses pretending to be drunken dancing is ludicrously caricatural. But then there is Aditi Rao Hydari looking every inch the ethereal kothewali, a distant cousin to Rekha in Umrao Jaan. And Shruti Sharma as ill-fated-in-love Saima makes her space. I must also mention Jayati Bhatia as Manisha Koirala’s faithful woman-Friday. Even when in the background she makes her presence felt.
Bhansali’s vision and execution are impeccable so much so that you wonder what this kotha classic would look like on the big screen.

It’s quite rare for actors to grow up on screen, but Farida Jalal is one such actor who has portrayed an array of characters in the space of the hero’s sister, a mother, and now a grandmother.
While Hollywood has Leonardo DiCaprio, who started his career at the age of 17, India has Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Farida Jalal. All of their careers are textbooks in cinematic longevity.
Farida started her journey at 17 with the film ‘Taqdeer’, a role offered to her by Tarachand Barjatya, grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya. How she was offered her first role has a story of its own, something that rarely happens to artistes. She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she went on to win, where her co-finalist happened to be the first superstar of Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna.

Film: Gippi; Starring: Riya Vij, Divya Dutta, Taaha Shah; Directed by: Sonam Nair: Rating: *** 1/2 (3 and a half)
At the end of this endearing film you have to admit it's not just the pre-pubescent protagonist who has come of age. So has mainstream Indian cinema. It can now talk about issues such as homosexuality and menstruation without a blush.
Meet Gippi then. She is free-spirited, unaffected, overweight and under-confident, though not willing to show it (her lack of confidence, that is). Gippi's story could well have become a trite pedestrian exercize in cliched sequences woven around the acne-ridden years of awkwardness and self-discovery. Instead , debutant director Sonam Nair gives us vibrant vignettes from a young.

Taking a refreshing detour from the romantic and family entertainers that Dharma Productions is associated with, the production house unveiled the first look and promo of their upcoming film Gippi starring 13-year old debutant Riya Vij and actor Taaha Shah (of Luv Ka The End fame). As we showed you yesterday, over the past month or so, Dharma Productions had released five online promotional videos in a successful attempt to creating curiosity around the mysterious lead character of the film i.e. Gippi. These videos featuring Gen-y stars – Arjun Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra are seen reminiscing about Gippi, her habits and her familiar quirks. The message being driven through these promotional videos was that all of us have at some point of our lives known someone like Gippi or identify with the characteristics and traits that the lead of this film possesses.

There’s nothing quite as exciting as a list of debutants. Why? They are the future! They’re the ones upon whom all eyes are on. They’re the ones that even make the top heroes feel a bit shakey on their high pedestals. And so it’s time to congratulate and appreciate top 5 male debutants of the year who are now set to post some real threat to our superstars!
5. Vivaan Shah – 7 Khoon Maaf
Vishal Bhardwaj may have not gotten everything right with 7 Khoon Maaf but he certainly had a perfect cast in place. Thanks to him we have a #5 debutant of this list, Vivaan Shah, who just blew us away with portrayal of the grieving Arun whose love for a woman was never realised. The star kid left no doubt in the minds of audiences that he got his debut solely based on talent and name. Welcome to Bollywood Mr.

Yash Raj Films introduced Bollywood to youth films with a vision to make films for the youth, of the youth, by the youth. Within just a span of one year, Y-Films became the defining launch pad for fresh talent. The studio has put up over 32 names of directors, actors, music composers, assistant directors, editors, DOPs, writers, costume designers, animators on the silver screen. But, having said that, these were not straight- outta-college newbies. Most of the talent launched has been around, assisting reputed technicians or making their mark in the advertising or television space for quite a while. What Y-Films gave them was a fabulous platform. And each of them now has a film to their credit. That too in a Yash Raj film!

A Still from Mera Naam Joker
A 16 year old best man (Rishi Kapoor) hands away his teacher and lady love (Simi Garewal) to her husband (Manoj Kumar) while crying his heart out. This scene from Mera Naam Joker (1970) is perhaps India’s most defining cinematic moment of a student’s unconditional love for his teacher

Bollywood is legendary for its colorful and often lengthy romantic movies. Romance and drama have been etched together since Alam Ara (1931) and we have seen several Laila‘s and Majnu’s, Heer‘s and Ranjha‘s move mountains to make a classic love story. Yet many feel that there no love as pure as the love of a child. Few Indian films have dared to explore the crush of a student for a teacher or an older person, a phenomenon most of us may identify with. These films portray the love of children,...
