"I'm here to find the great lake of fresh water, and you seem to know a lot about the desert, so..." The Orchard has unveiled an official trailer for an indie gem titled Everything Beautiful Is Far Away, a quirky little lo-fi, sci-fi film about a man and a woman wandering around in a desert. From directors Pete Ohs & Andrea Sisson, this intriguing film is a metaphor for life and relationships, similar (thematically) to Swiss Army Man. I caught this film at the American Film Festival in Poland and it totally won me over (read my full review here). Joseph Cross stars, along with Julia Garner, featuring an appearance by C.S. Lee. It's very hard to describe this film, and even harder to convince anyone to watch it, so hopefully this trailer will get a few of you interested. It's a charming indie discovery that you'll be glad you took the time to enjoy.

This year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, better known as Laff if you’re fun, has unveiled its full slate of 2017 offerings, including new offerings from Vincent Grashaw, Leena Pendharkar, Hong Sangsoo, Lea Thompson and many more. The slate includes 48 feature films, 51 short films, 15 high school short films and 10 short episodic works representing 32 countries. The festival’s five competitions feature 37 World Premieres, 2 International Premieres and 9 North American Premieres. Across the competition categories, 42% of the films are directed by women and 40% are directed by people of color.

Works-in-progress event devoted to Us indies to take place in Paris June 8-10.
Us directors Mike Ott and Adam Keleman will present their upcoming films at the fifth edition of Us in Progress in Paris this June.
Running June 8-10, the programme is a joint initiative between the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, the Champs-Elysées Film Festival in Paris and Black Rabbit Film in New York.
Rough cuts of a selection of Us independent features are screened with the aim of finding them sales agents, festival homes and producers.
Benjamin Dickinson’s sci-fi comedy Creative Control, which took the top prize at the event in 2014, went on to to be sold, for example, by Philippe Bober’s Paris-based Coproduction Office.
Ott will present his hybrid work California Dreams revolving around auditions in which people perform scenes from their favourite films.
The director won the Polish round of Us in Progress in 2013 for his last film Lake Los Angeles.

Rough cuts of a selection of Us independent features are screened with the aim of finding them sales agents, festival homes and producers.
Benjamin Dickinson’s sci-fi comedy Creative Control, which took the top prize at the event in 2014, went on to to be sold, for example, by Philippe Bober’s Paris-based Coproduction Office.
Ott will present his hybrid work California Dreams revolving around auditions in which people perform scenes from their favourite films.
The director won the Polish round of Us in Progress in 2013 for his last film Lake Los Angeles.

I met Andrea Sisson and Pete Ohs (collectively/creatively know as Lauren Edward -- their middle names) the night their documentary I Send You This Place screened at WestFest, an experiment in micro-festing put on here in Los Angelese by the fairtrade filmmmaking site Seed&Spark. I had curated a pair of films that would be playing the final night, but made it a priority to attend all three evening of the fest. As the short block of credits rolled for their film I knew instantly that I wanted to speak with the married couple about the journey they had just shared with us... and what was next. The fair trade filmmaking site Seed&Spark is running a little experiment in the festival arena and it's all going down Tuesday, October 1 through Thursday October 3 at the Hub La. Experimental Love Letter To Iceland’s Therapeutic Vistas
Films are, for the most part, classified as either narrative or non-fiction. Samples of the docu’s format line’s being blurred have become more prevalent in the last decade than ever before, as is the case with the hard-to-define picture, experimental, catchall category that Andrea Sisson and Pete Ohs’ debut feature I Send You This Place belongs to. Although it is essentially a non-fictional film, its construction appears more in line with something from a video-art exposition at a museum. It doesn’t follow a pattern, or tries to clearly expose an issue, or an extraordinary person’s life; it is, at least from its synopsis, about a journey to understand mental illness. Be warned, it is much more metaphorical than what most viewers can handle.
Divided in 9 chapters, which is strange since the film barely reaches the feature-length mark at about 68 minutes,...

Narcissism and pretentiousness vie for supremacy in I Send You This Place, a pseudo-documentary in which co-director (and constant screen presence) Andrea Sisson wanders around Iceland because she believes its landscape of wintry clouds, mountains, winds, and colors will allow her to understand the head space of her schizophrenic brother, Jake.
