New York University has revealed its 2024 picks for its Black List-inspired Purple List of the best production-ready screenplays from Tisch School of the Arts graduate film students and recent alumni.
The four screenplays, selected via a blind reading process by industry insiders, are Blue Comedy by Vincent Lee Accettola, Little Phnom Penh by Chheangkea, Rubber Hut by Hanna Gray Organschi and Satoshi by Sara Crow and David Rafailedes.
Blue Comedy follows a celebrity comedian who recently came out of the closet who returns to the Boston stand-up scene to mentor a straight comedian for whom he’s developed feelings. Little Phnom Penh explores a Cambodian woman’s personal desires and changing family roles over two decades in a story that spans across the U.S. and Cambodia after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Rubber Hut centers around a former ex-Pam Am stewardess who opens a drive-thru condom shop...

You maniacs! You brought the planet of the apes to CinemaCon 2024! Humanity has a lot of making up to do after ushering in the fall of civilization and our replacement at the top of the food chain by intelligent simians, so 20th Century Studios is doing all that it can to make things right by bringing the next installment of the popular sci-fi franchise to the annual convention aimed towards theater owners. Luckily, /Film's very own Ryan Scott is in attendance at the event, covering all the major happenings as major studios descend upon the bright lights of Las Vegas. CinemaCon has traditionally served as ground zero for exclusive first looks, buzzy footage descriptions, and all sorts of other marketing hype for the biggest and most anticipated movies on the calendar. This year is certainly no exception.

Disney premiered 13 action-packed minutes of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” at CinemaCon, ginning up excitement for its reboot of the science-fiction franchise.
Set generations after the events of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” the movie follows a young chimp named Noa (biblical allusions clearly intended) as he embarks on an epic journey after his village is torched by a band of gorillas (we think — we’re no primatologists here). It also finds Noa (played by “It” and “To Leslie” star Owen Teague) scaling the rocky face of a cliff on the prowl for eagle eggs. He’s accompanied by two, less daring and much older members of his clan. Things don’t go entirely according to plan, with Noa nearly falling hundreds of feet to the ground before after the angry bird returns to his home. Vertigo sufferers be warned.

I love the Planet of the Apes franchise. Everything from the original 1968 movie to the short-lived TV series to the excellent Apes trilogy starring Andy Serkis; hell, I’ve even got a soft spot for Tim Burton’s reboot. The next installment of the franchise is just over the horizon, and the audience at CinemaCon got to witness an exclusive sneak peek of thirteen minutes of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I am officially jealous.
The footage starts in an ape community in the jungle and follows young Noa (Owen Teague) as he and his friends steal some eggs from an eagle’s nest. There are three eggs, but they leave one behind, as that’s the law. They hope to raise the young eagles themselves, but unfortunately, they’re caught in the act by the momma eagle, and Noa is nearly knocked off a cliff. We then...

Alberto Corredor’s directorial debut, the supernatural horror film Baghead, is now out on digital, DVD and Blu-ray.
Based on his short film of the same name, Alberto Corredor’s Baghead follows a young woman who inherits a pub in Berlin. She discovers a disturbing entity, the titular Baghead, in the basement. Baghead has the ability to bring the dead back for a wee chat, but unfortunately, there are terrifying consequences as there usually is with these things.
The film stars The Witcher’s Freya Allan in the lead role. She is joined by Jeremy Irvine, Ruby Barker, Peter Mullan, Saffron Burrows and Julika Jenkins in the cast.
The film marks Allan’s first feature film lead role, but Allan will next be seen in Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes as the human character that forms a connection with Noa, Owen Teague’s ape protagonist.

"Planet of the Apes" has consistently been a science-fiction franchise (and one of the best we have), but the movies come in different sci-fi flavors. The original was a time travel story (even if Charlton Heston's lead George Taylor took the long way around via cryogenesis), culminating in the shocking ending right out of "The Twilight Zone" where Taylor discovers the shattered Statue of Liberty and realizes this ape-ruled world was Earth all along.
The third movie, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," saw the talking apes travel back to the 1970s when humans reigned. Subsequent films filled in the timeline, depicting the uprising that led to the planet of the apes. The new films (the so-called Caesar trilogy) have done the reverse, starting at the beginning and taking the route of contemporary speculative fiction. Things have only come full circle with the fourth film, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

The Planet of the Apes reboot series is still ongoing, even after the original trilogy has been officially concluded. Set 300 years after the original trilogy, the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to start a new trilogy of films that will continue the reboot universe with new characters and a new storyline. The movie is officially releasing on May 10, 2024, with previews being available from May 8, 2024. Recently, we have reported of a new poster being released as part of the film’s promotion, but we now have news regarding the film’s runtime.
Namely, as AMC reports, the movie is listed as being 145 minutes (2 hours and 25 minutes) long, which would make it the longest movie in the franchise, surpassing Reeves’ War by a total of five minutes. This is certainly great news for fans of the franchise and indicates that a lot of effort has, indeed, been...

"Enter the Kingdom in IMAX." 20th Century Studios has partenred with IMAX for an exciting promo this weekend. With the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in IMAX theaters, they will be screening a special IMAX-exclusive preview for the next Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie. This extended promo is only available in theaters and is not online (yet) - made specifically for IMAX screens. The sneak peek runs 3 minutes. The final movie will play for 2 weeks in IMAX theaters this summer. Directed by Wes Ball, this takes place years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). The Planet of the Apes reboot franchise has been one of the most successful reboots in history, with the new trilogy becoming a critical and commercial success. Led by Andy Serkis, the trilogy was built on a long tradition of similar films, managing to bring a lot of new elements, as well as keeping true to the idea of the original story. And while the trilogy ended, the reboot franchise is not dead, as a new sequel trilogy is planned, starting with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is set to be released on May 10, 2024, with early access screenings available starting with May 8, 2024.

Of all the movies debuting this summer, I am most looking forward to "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes." This series has been on a roll since the 2011 reboot and I'm excited to see it take a new direction more akin to the original films
300 years after the events of "War for the Planet of the Apes," Ape-kind has entered its Bronze Age. They've also forgotten Caesar's first teaching — "Apes together strong!" — and splintered into different and warring tribes. The chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) must go on a journey after his people are attacked by apes from the kingdom of Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). The trailers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" have been teasing the state of this new ape-ruled world. Green forestry has reclaimed the land and the apes live in the shadow of decaying structures built by humans (think of how people in the...

This year welcomes the fourth part of the Planet of the Apes franchise- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Though only speculation, it seems like the box office won’t be so fond of the apes. Inspired by the literary work of French author Pierre François Marie Louis Boulle, the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise is all set to release its fourth movie.
Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features Owen Teague as the lead actor alongside Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. Distributed by 20th Century Studios, the film’s trailer has already crossed 13 million views. However, despite the franchise’s fame, the movie might not make a great deal at the box office.

Wes Ball offers a few details regarding Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ setting, look and connection to the previous films in the series.
One of this summer’s big blockbusters is Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, the next entry in the modern Apes series that ran from 2011 to 2017. That series grew in success with each film whilst also introducing Caesar, a digitally-created ape character (portrayed by Andy Serkis) that really connected with audiences.
The new film’s connected to that trilogy and also a jumping-off point for a new series of films, and the project’s director, Wes Ball, has been chatting about the connection between Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes and the films that precede it. We know that a fair amount of time has passed since the Age of Caesar, given that humans in the film are said to have devolved into a feral state,...

You can’t keep a good ape down.
While 2017’s “War of the Planet of the Apes” was a fitting conclusion to the latest trilogy in the (second) rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise, more monkey business is headed our way. The first full trailer for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” dropped during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and showed that the battle on the gridiron was no match for a big Hollywood spectacle.
The new film, out on May 10, is directed by Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner”) and stars motion-capture ape renderings performed by Owen Teague (Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s son in “You Hurt My Feelings”), Kevin Durand, and William H. Macy. The part of the doe-eyed human female (wearing the requisite rags) is played by “The Witcher” star Freya Allan.

If you hate every chimp you see, from chimpan-a to chimpan-z, then you'll definitely want to look away from the Super Bowl trailer for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes." Director Wes Ball's follow-up to the critically acclaimed prequel trilogy picks up long after the fall of the human empire and the reign of Caesar, focusing on new protagonist Noa (Owen Teague) as he finds himself brought into conflict with evolved ape leader Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand).
Enough time has passed on Earth that there's little left of human civilization aside from crumbling, greenery-covered ruins, and the events of the prequel trilogy have been largely lost to time. Noa, for example, has no idea who Caesar is, while to others he's become almost a religious figure. "You're seeing the influence and the evolution of what Caesar left," Durand told Empire earlier this year, explaining that Proximus Caesar is...

Eileen Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, Anne Hathaway
Director: William Oldroyd
Review of Eileen Is Out! (Picture Credit: Youtube)
What’s Good: Thomasin McKenzie’s portrayal of Eileen is refreshing, devoid of traditional expectations, while Anne Hathaway captivates with her artificial yet electric depiction of Rebecca. Marin Ireland’s exceptional performance adds authentic trauma, and the film’s cold, desolate portrayal of women resonates.
What’s Bad: The narrative loses its initial psychological complexity, devolving into a thinly developed crime plot. The film needs to work on the balance between psychosexual strangeness and a more conventional storyline, leaving the audience uncertain about its direction.
Loo Break: “‘Eileen” offers a brief pause around the 45-minute mark when Eileen enters Rebecca’s office. Feel free to take a break but return promptly for the unfolding narrative.

If there’s one thing apes are afraid of besides drowning, it’s George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. To avoid conflict at the box office during Memorial Day weekend, 20th Century Studios‘ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is moving to May 10 to avoid Furiosa’s wrath. The new date pushes Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes up by two weeks, giving the Wes Ball-directed action film time to earn more bananas at the box office before Furiosa inevitably leaves other releases in the dust.
The new date finds Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes competing with Focus Features’ Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, Sony’s horror comedy Horrorscope, and an untitled release from Angel Pictures. Fans can take a trip to the “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” sooner than expected.
Disney is moving up the release date for the new “Planet of the Apes” movie from May 24 to May 10. It avoids a crowded Memorial Day holiday weekend that also includes the releases of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie.” The apes will now take on the Amy Winehouse biopic, “Back to Black,” on the new date.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” will also screen in Imax for the first two weeks of its release, marking a first for an “Apes” movie.
The new movie is set 300 years in the future and follows a new civilization of apes, monkeys, gorillas, orangutans and other primates. The previous reboot trilogy, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014) and “War for the Planet of the Apes...

Filmmaker Wes Ball’s 2024 summer tentpole Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will try to conquer moviegoers two weeks early.
Disney’s 20th Century Studios announced Friday that the film will now open May 10 instead of May 24. The shift gives it distance from the crowded Memorial Day marquee, which includes George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Warner Bros.) and The Garfield Movie (Sony).
The move was a no-brainer since there is no direct competition on that date in terms of a new tentpole. Plus, it gives Planet of the Apes Imax screens for the first two weeks of its a release, as well as other large-format screens (it’s the first of the multitude of the Apes films to play in Imax.)

Wes Ball, the director of the newest installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise, titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, recently revealed why Andy Serkis won’t be coming back in the upcoming entry. “We talked about it, for sure. Like, ‘Could you play another ape character?’” Wes Ball said. “I entertained that thought for a long time, because I thought it would be f***ing cool. And Matt [Reeves] would always say, ‘Andy is the best actor I’ve ever worked with.’” At the end of the day, Ball decided that Serkis’ performance in the Planet of the Apes trilogy “was just too iconic,” but added that there’s a chance he could appear in future movies.
Entertainment Weekly has revealed new images while Ball unveils details about his newest film. While Caesar’s story as the Ape Revolutionary has ended, a new primate character takes up the mantle.
