For many, Brie Larson first came onto their radars in Destin Daniel Cretton’s film Short Term 12. Later on this year, Larson will re-team with Cretton for The Glass Castle, which dropped a Trailer last week. You’ll obviously get to see the Trailer at the end of this post, but we’re not quite there yet. First up, we’ll set the stage for the flick. It’s actually only about three months from hitting screens, so it’s hardly some late winter release. If it hits with strong reviews, it could have a head start on all of the festival entries. I’m sure that’s not an accident either. Short Term 12 may have been too small, but Room has Larson a force to be reckoned with. She can help get this one over the hump, no doubt about that. The film is an adaptation of the memoir by Jeannette Walls.

The horror genre often derives much of its appeal from playing into expectations and generating visceral terror at the same time. That’s certainly the case with “Stephanie,” a more-than-competent entry in the creepy kid subgenre that doesn’t break new ground but manages to find its footing anyway. Directed on a microbudget scale by “A Beautiful Mind” screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the movie never crystalizes into the ominous extremes of “The Omen” or “The Bad Seed,” but it nevertheless develops a prevalent eeriness around the chilling performance of a young child.
That would be the titular Stephanie (Shree Crooks, the youngest member of the anarchistic family in “Captain Fantastic”), who spends most of the movie entirely on her own in an empty house. After a bizarre and somewhat cheesy opening segment set in an inexplicable dystopian future, the movie flashes back to the disquieting story of Stephanie, who inhabits her...

Akiva Goldsman may be best known as an Oscar-winning screenwriter whose credits include “A Beautiful Mind” and “Cinderella Man,” but he appears to have found a second act as a horror director. At the inaugural edition of The Overlook Film Festival, a horror film festival taking place at the Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, Oregon, Goldsman premiered “Stephanie,” the low-budget supernatural horror film that he directed for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions.
After the screening, Goldsman and Blum shared some breaking news with the audience: The pair would be teaming up again for a new adaptation of “Firestarter,” Stephen King’s 1980 novel about a young girl with pyrokensis and the government agency on her trail.
“No one knows about this at all,” said Blum, who also received the festival’s Visionary Award for his support of horror films. “Akiva and Stephen King have a long relationship. We wouldn’t do...

Captain Fantastic — 9-year-old Charlie Shotwell — sits down at a baby grand piano and casually begins tickling the ivories with an original classical composition (he's been taking lessons for a year and a half). After a few minutes, he gets up, and 10-year-old Saniyya Sidney, who appears in both Fences and Hidden Figures, takes his place. She bangs out the first few stanzas of John Legend's "All of Me," then turns the stool over to 11-year-old Shree Crooks, one of Shotwell's Captain Fantastic co-stars,...

23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have delivered their batch of nominations this morning, with Kenneth Lonergan‘s Manchester by the Sea leading the pack with four nominations. Close behind are Fences and Moonlight, each picking three nods, while Captain Fantastic, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, La La Land, and Lion each grabbed a pair.
In terms of surprises, The Girl on the Train‘s Emily Blunt beat out the likes of Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving) and Annette Bening (20th Century Women) for a Best Actress nod and, for some reason, Nocturnal Animals, got recognition for its stunt work. With the awards ceremony taking place on January 29, see all the film nominations for the ceremony below.

On paper, you could argue that the basic components of Captain Fantastic don’t sound like a recipe for cinematic brilliance: Viggo Mortensen plays Ben, a hippy-ish father of six kids, who he has named things like Bodevan, Kielyr and Rellian. He raises them in the woods, home-schooling them using a vast selection of books and training them in the ways of survival using mother nature’s canvas as a classroom.
I was worried going in it’d this this would be a garish and unrealistic film about a super-quirky family with nothing engaging or relatable about them. But, I’m pleased to report that this is one of the finest films I’ve seen a long time. Captain Fantastic has heart, drama, and humour in abundance. Writer-director Matt Ross, with only his second feature, has hit on something truly excellent here.

Captain Fantastic may sound like the title of comic book movie but this warm, thoughtful film centers on a different kind of hero, a father who has devoted his life to his children. He is indeed a fantastic father, even if his ideas about how to raise his kids is far out of the mainstream, something which comes to the fore when his family faces a life-altering crisis. Captain Fantastic is an emotionally moving film that mixes drama and a bit of humor in a touching story of an unconventional family who have to work through their grief to find a new way to interact with conventional society.
Viggo Mortensen turns in a wonderful performance as that father, Ben Cash. Ben and his wife Leslie (Trin Miller) chose to leave prosperous conventional lives behind to raise their six children in a counter-culture utopia off the grid – way off the grid.

As family road movies of the off-beat, Sundance ilk go, Captain Fantastic is a standout, zigging whenever indie convention dictates it should zag, offering a fresh rendition of an old formula. Writer-director Matt Ross follows a clan of six children living deep in the lush forests of Oregon, led by their charismatic father, Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen), an outdoorsman/philosopher who’s built them a life of hunting, gathering and book-fueled enlightenment, disentangled from societal norms and unplugged from the digital world altogether.
Ross explores the friction between Cash’s off-the-grid credo and their extended family’s decidedly “real-world,” all-American way of life via scenarios that occasionally lack nuance but are nevertheless sharp and thought-provoking and dovetail nicely into and out of each other, making for an intellectually stimulating yet wholly approachable tale of family dysfunction and adventure.

You often have to take praise that comes from the Sundance Film Festival with a grain of salt. That being said, when a title goes from Sundance to the Cannes Film Festival, that’s a sign that we have quality on our hands. This movie wound up blowing me away when I saw it last month, and this week it hits theaters. Not only did it surprise me with how tremendous it was, I was absolutely thrilled with how it even exceeded the reviews that had come previously. Filmmaker Matt Ross has something pretty special on his hands here, and I really hope that it gets properly appreciated by audiences. The film is an often funny drama about a pseudo survivalist named Ben (Viggo Mortensen) and his very unusual family. Hidden away in a remote part of the pacific northwest, Ben and his wife Leslie (Trin Miller) are raising six kids decidedly off the grid.

★★★☆☆ Not to be confused with the plethora of superheroes currently smashing each other to bits on our cinema screens, Matt Ross' Captain Fantastic is an effective, comic road movie which doesn't quite dare to be as radical as its protagonists. Viggo Mortensen plays Ben, a man who has taken his family into the wilds to live the "good life". However, unlike Tom and Barbara in the BBC sitcom of that name, Ben has fully committed. His son Bodevan (George MacKay) kills a deer in the first scene and is blooded by his father as he becomes a man. The brood of children - Nai (Charlie Shotwell), Rellian (Nicholas Hamilton), Zaja (Shree Crooks), Kielyr (Samantha Isler) and Vespyr (Annalise Basso) - all have made-up names to be unique.

The movie stars Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella, George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks, Charlie Shotwell, Ann Dowd, Erin Moriarty, Missi Pyle, with Kathryn Hahn and Steve Zahn.
Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father (Viggo Mortensen) dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he’s taught them.

Captain America, Captain Nemo and, to a lesser extent, Captain Marvel have all been making the headlines of late, but of Captain Fantastic? Bound for Cannes Film Festival next month, Matt Ross’ impassioned dramedy has today debuted its maiden trailer, thrusting Viggo Mortensen into the throes of a family crisis.
Written and directed by Moss, Captain Fantastic opens with Mortensen’s father emerging from a prolonged stint in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. Putting some distance between his grieving family and his far-flung haven, Captain Fantastic then sees Mortensen journey into the city, opening up a whole new perspective on parentage and life in general. Powerful stuff, in the right hands, and we’re excited to see how...

Some professionals can traverse the line between acting and directing with ease. One such individual is Matt Ross, who has excelled acting on TV shows like American Horror Story, Magic City, Silicon Valley and Big Love and sitting behind the camera on shorts (The Language of Love and Human Resources) and feature films (sexy Sundance drama 28 Hotel Rooms). And now, we’ve learned that his cast, previously announced to be led by Viggo Mortensen, has added another huge talent, with word that Frank Langella has signed on.

George MacKay, Annalise Basso, Samantha Isler, Aussie Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks and Charlie Shotwell all co-star.
