After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Updated: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav felt the effect of the WGA strike while delivering a commencement speech at Boston University May 21, getting jeered and facing chants of “pay your writers” while he was trying to speak. Ten days later, the university’s president published an op-ed in the school’s newspaper chastising the students for their behavior and apologizing to Zaslav.
“Late Night with Seth Meyers” writer Mike Scollins posted a video of one moment during the address in which the chant was loud enough to make Zaslav pause in the middle of his speech. Scollins captioned the video “Zaslav getting hit with a Pay Your Writers chant in Boston. This is so good.”

David Zaslav declined to appear on stage at this week’s Warner Bros. Discovery upfront — which took an abbreviated form without the presence of celebrities due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike — but he emerged to make a public appearance on Sunday when he delivered the commencement address at Boston University. But despite being an educational event with no formal connection to Warner Bros. Discovery, the speech was still plagued by the strike-induced chaos that he likely hoped to avoid by skipping the upfronts (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The WGA made good on previously-announced plans to protest the speech, as picket lines could reportedly be seen outside of the venue. The guild had previously criticized the university’s decision to select Zaslav as a commencement speaker during an ongoing writers strike.

Jeers and chants of “pay your writers” greeted Warner Bros Discovery chief David Zaslav on Sunday as he delivered Boston University’s commencement address.
Zaslav, who graduated from Bu’s law school in 1985, never overtly acknowledged the WGA strike or any of the vitriol, which rippled through the outdoor event throughout his 22-minute speech. While an official picket line had been set up outside the venue, a number of students appeared to be joining in the vocal response to Zaslav’s appearance. Toward the end, he appeared to be speaking in part to his opponents when he offered a closing wish. “I hope to see all of you — and I mean all of you,” he said, pointing at the crowd for emphasis, “along the way. The journey of life. There’s nothing better.”
According to a series of pro-wga tweets before, during and after Zaslav’s speech, hundreds of picketers...

Sad Affleck strikes again! Accompanying his wife Jennifer Lopez at the 2023 Grammys, viewers picked up on Ben Affleck looking particularly “miserable” during the ceremony, especially as he remained expressionless as J. Lo rocked out to the tribute performance to Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy by Robinson, Stevie Wonder and Chris Stapleton.
“However bad of a day you’re having, I promise you’re not as miserable as Ben Affleck at the Grammys right now,” one viewer noted, while another pointed out, “Someone get Ben Affleck some serotonin.”
“Ben Affleck” quickly became a trending topic on Twitter during the Grammys telecast.
Likening his somber appearance to the iconic meme of the “Gone Girl” actor looking exasperated as he takes a smoke break, another Twitter user suggested “someone get Ben Affleck a cigarette and a dunkin coffee stat.”

In honor of the holiday season, “Late Night” host Seth Meyers held a surprise inspection for the writing staff that puts together his monologue.
“They write hundreds, hundreds of jokes every day just to get to the 10 or 12 we use in the monologue. And honestly a lot of those jokes that they write just aren’t good,” Meyers said. “Sometimes I think they just throw in a few stinkers everyday just to fill the page and meet the assignment. But just because the holidays are here doesn’t mean we can tolerate laziness.”
“I’m gonna read some actual jokes that were really submitted by my writers. They, like, turned them in, with their names on it,” he continued. “They are unusable for the show. Some are dumb, some are offensive, some are confusing. Most importantly, the writers don’t know we’re doing this and because a lot of...

Meteorologist Al Roker is doing what he does best as Hurricane Ida makes landfall – he’s reporting from the ground. But as the 140-mph winds blow and the Gulf of Mexico surges, his fans are concerned about his safety. To those people, he has a message of assurance that he’s perfectly capable of handling himself.
As Roker reported live from Louisiana on “Meet the Press” Sunday morning, he was slammed by huge waves, struggling to hear host Chuck Todd and to just remain standing. Within minutes, fans on Twitter were expressing their concern for Roker and questioning NBC for having him reporting in such dangerous conditions.
“Al Roker is almost 70 years old, why is this necessary,” Philip Lewis tweeted. Mike Scollins even went so far as to joke that the network was “hazing” Roker.

Just as soon as AMC Theatres announced the chain would begin a phased reopening of all its U.S. locations on July 15, backlash erupted over the fact that the company’s president said they wouldn’t require moviegoers to wear masks. At least, not in states where it isn’t required by law. However, the controversy led the theater chain to change course on Friday, as AMC will now require face masks in all of its locations as the phased reopening begins. If you forgot your mask, no problem — AMC will be selling them for a dollar.
“We did not want to be drawn into a political controversy,” AMC President and CEO Adam Aron told Variety in an interview Thursday about the original plan. “We thought it might be counterproductive if we forced mask-wearing on those people who believe strongly that it is not necessary. We think that the vast...

Funny Or Die went to the Governors Ball music fest in New York over the weekend and asked all the right questions to bands. Namely, one question: which question are you asked all the time that you don't want to answer anymore? Then Mike Scollins answers for them. I have written about music professionally for more than 15 years. And, yes, I have asked some of these questions. But I have never asked Strand Of Oaks why he's just so good looking. And I always enjoy Noel Gallagher trying too hard. What Not To Ask Famous Bands At The Governors Ball Music Festival from Dan Abramson...
