Wonder Woman took cinemas by storm when it was released in 2017. Despite being a period piece set during World War 2, it managed to bring in droves of fans to witness Diana Prince’s origin tale. So, with the same creative team returning for a sequel and the ever-popular decade of the 80s being its setting, this could outdo the first in every way. But with expectations comes disappointment as the film released during Covid caused quite a stir for its creative partners and had some rather questionable CGI. So today on DC Revisited, we’re getting into it all as we dive into Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984.
After the first film made $822 Million worldwide, a sequel was announced just one month after release. A few months later, it was announced that writer/director Patty Jenkins and her co-writer Geoff Johns would return and serve the same roles for this new venture.

You’d think by now, bad guys know not to threaten Liam Neeson and his family.
In his latest action thriller “Retribution,” Neeson reprises a role that he does very well: a dad who will go to any length to protect his children.
This time, his special skill is driving. Check out the logline below:
When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the city to complete a specific series of tasks. With his kids trapped in the back seat and a bomb that will explode if they get out of the car, a normal commute becomes a twisted game of life or death as Matt follows the stranger’s increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to save his family.

Liam Neeson has played Jesuit priests, Jedi masters, Greek gods, German industrialists, revolutionary heroes (Irish and Scottish), iconic sexologists, and megalomaniacal supervillains. Make him play one man with a particular set of skills — skills that make him a nightmare for folks who want to harm his loved ones — and the next thing you know, Neeson has to save his family/friends/fellow plane and train passengers every other time he walks out the door. The 71-year-old actor has range for days, but after Taken reestablished him as someone you do not want to fuck with,...

Wholly possible that it was a script kicking around since the mid-2000s pitched as “Speed meets Phone Booth” with a few hence-added references to “the dark web” and “crypto accounts,” the new Liam Neeson thriller Retribution likely won’t surprise anyone. It’s at least notable for bearing the return of sturdy journeyman Nimrod Antal to English-language thrillers (Neeson’s go-to director Jaume Collet-Serra serves instead as producer this time), and certainly shows a more competent hand behind the camera than that of the Blacklight variety.
This time we see Neeson as the generically named Matt Turner, an American businessman or hedge fund guy or something of that ilk (his boss played by Matthew Modine calls him “a credit to capitalism”) living in a modernist Berlin house with his family. Though home life is strained in virtually every arena; disconnected from his moody son Zach and phone-addicted daughter Emily...

No wonder the writers are on strike.
Being forced to try to bring freshness to the same tired ideas over and over to get some studio work must be frustrating. I would be picketing Lionsgate (which is behind this movie) just because it’s really not easy making this kind of thing original. The latest ripoff — and it literally is because it comes from the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, which itself has been remade more than once in the past few years — is the Liam Neeson-starring Retribution. A better title might be Generic Neeson #9. I even looked up the title on IMDb just to make sure this was a new Neeson movie.
This is not to say that Regurgitation, er, I mean Retribution isn’t effectively made. Its director, the talented Nimród Antal (Control), does what he can to make Christopher Salmanpour’s (basically a TV procedural writer) by-the-numbers...

Pop quiz, hot shot! There's a bomb in Liam Neeson's car! What do you do?!
What if someone remade "Speed" and removed all the stuff that made that movie so exciting? The result might be "Retribution," Nimród Antal's monotonous thriller that finds Liam Neeson doing his usual Liam Neeson thing yet again. Neeson, who went from professorial roles to an unlikely action star, can play this sort of part in his sleep at this point, and he certainly seems sleepy here, growling unconvincing dialogue as he speeds around in a car wired to explode. Yes, just like "Speed," a mad bomber has planted a device in a vehicle, and if a certain set of rules aren't followed, that bomb will explode.
Neeson is Matt Turner, a financier living in Germany with his frustrated wife (Embeth Davidtz), his angry teen son (Jack Champion), and his loud daughter (Lilly Aspell). We...

Nimród Antal’s Retribution revolves around a hard-nosed financier, Matt Turner (Liam Neeson), for whom phone calls translate into money. In the rare moments where he isn’t trying to talk a client into a juicy new investment, he’ll half-participate in a conversation with his wife, Heather (Embeth Davidtz), or bark orders at his children, Zack (Jack Champion) and Emily (Lilly Aspell). Given how recklessly we see Matt handling other people’s money and emotions, it’s no surprise when someone eventually comes around looking for payback.
And given that this is a Liam Neeson movie in the year 2023 with a title like Retribution, it’s no surprise that they do so by holding him hostage with the threat of explosion. The film opens with Matt begrudgingly agreeing to take the kiddos to school. During the drive, he receives a call and a mysterious voice informs him that there...

In “Retribution,” which could be the title of almost any Liam Neeson film of the past 15 years, the 71-year-old star is still a lean, looming oak tree of a man, but for maybe the first time he’s up against a force that outpowers his sullen machismo. It’s called trying to be a daddy in the 21st century.
Neeson’s Matt Turner is a high-powered banker/financier who lives with his wife and two kids in a palatial modernist glass house in Berlin. Neeson has often played devoted fathers — that was the whole premise of “Taken,” which kicked off the Neeson-as-seething-roughneck-of-vengeance genre back in 2008.
But in “Retribution,” Matt gets no respect from his tween daughter, Emily (Lilly Aspell), or his arrogant teenage son, Zach (Jack Champion). The reason, as the movie presents it, is that the culture around him has leeched his authority away. He can’t “lay down...

Break out the popcorn. Liam Neeson is back in Retribution, an action film that calls back to 1994’s Speed. Instead of a bus, Neeson is trapped in an SUV with his kids, and can’t risk getting out or pressure triggers will cause the vehicle to explode.
Neeson, at a still-robust age 71, has spawned a genre of minding-his-own-business guy that is forced to seek vengeance by circumstances ever since his first such film, 2008’s Taken. This latest offering fits neatly into that pantheon.
In the film, Neeson is compelled to engage with an anonymous voice on his cell phone, a character that sends him across the city to execute a series of violent demands.
The film includes appearances from Matthew Modine, Noma Dumezweni, Jack Champion, Lilly Aspell and Embeth Davidtz.
Retribution, from Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, is in theaters Aug. 25. Watch the trailer above.

There should be an official subgenre of action films devoted to Liam Neeson saving his family. There are certainly enough movies with Neeson’s character demonstrating a particular set of skills to keep his kids alive to warrant its own category. The latest, Retribution, just unveiled an official trailer that finds Neeson as a dad forced to keep driving…or else, kaboom!
Joining Neeson in the action thriller are Matthew Modine, Noma Dumezweni, Jack Champion, Lilly Aspell, and Embeth Davidtz. Nimród Antal (2010’s Predator) directs from a screenplay by Christopher Salmanpour (FBI: Most Wanted), with Andrew Rona, Alex Heineman, Jaume Collet-Serra, and Juan Sola producing.
Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions will unleash Retribution in theaters on August 25, 2023.

Pop quiz, hot shot: Liam Neeson has to figure out what to do when he discovers a bomb in his vehicle in the first full trailer for the film Retribution.
Director Nimród Antal’s Lionsgate release hits theaters Aug. 25 and is a remake of the 2015 Spanish-language thriller of the same name. The new version centers on Matt Turner (Neeson), who is driving with his kids when he learns from a mysterious caller that the car contains a bomb that will detonate if anyone exits the vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase throughout the city.
“Honey, something’s happened,” Neeson calmly relays in the trailer. “There’s a man who has put a bomb in the car. Under our seats, there are pressure triggers. We can’t get out. The car will explode.”
Later, the star loses his cool when the caller claims to be in control: “No, you’re not!

It’s been 15 years since Liam Neeson revitalized his career with the surprise hit Taken. And ever since, Neeson has been taking advantage of his new gruff action persona, lending his acting gravitas to action movies where he would dabble in gunplay and occasional fisticuffs. That’s not to say the Irish actor has been slumming entirely. The Academy Award-nominated actor has still been able to fit in films like Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Steve McQueen’s Widows to keep scratching his thespian itch. Now, Neeson is back in the driver’s seat in the trailer for his new action thriller, Retribution.

It has been a long time coming… 437 days to be exact, since HeyUGuys were last on a red carpet. This evening, with social distancing in place at the Honourable Artillery Company in East London, Hideaway Cinema put on quite a show with a special screening of Wonder Woman 1984. One of the very best scenes in Wonder Woman 1984 has to be the exhilarating opening act, featuring our eponymous protagonist Diana, but at the earlier stages in her life, with the role being reprised by Scottish actress Lilly Aspell. To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of speaking to the young performer, who seems to have a better head on her shoulders than any of us do.
Aspell tells us about the surreal experiences being part of such huge movies (having taken on the role in the original film too) and whether she anticipates coming back on board for a third venture. She tells us whether she’s had the chance to spend much time with Gal Gadot, who she naturally doesn’t share the screen with, and what it’s like working under the guidance of director Patty Jenkins. We also ask her about her training for the part,...

After several delayed releases due to the pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 was finally released on Christmas Day in theaters and for the folks in the United States, on the streaming service HBOMax. Though the sequel to the 2017 film fails to live up to the original, the cast is the strength of the film and allows the movie to rank higher than most films in the DC Universe.
Wonder Woman 1984, as the title suggests, is set in the mid-1980s during the peak of the Cold War between Russia and the United States and at a time everyone wanted more of everything. More money, more power, more nuclear weapons. It didn’t matter what it was, as long as it was more than another person.

Wonder Woman 1984 opens with two different action sequences that serve two very different purposes. The first is a flashback sequence showing a young Diana (Lilly Aspell) competing in an Olympic-style competitive event on Themyscira, and the second brings us into Washington D.C. in 1984 with a vibrant, cartoonish sort of jewelry heist that adult […]

Going back to Themyscira is one of the most anticipated aspects of Wonder Woman 1984. For many fans, the Amazons were the highlight of the original film and an all-Amazon movie can’t come soon enough. The physical prowess and the pure joy of seeing so many women not only in combat, but engaging in fight choreography that’s developed around their physical attributes/gifts/features, is a rare and wonderful thing. The resulting actions sequences were unlike anything on screen before: highly stylized yet clearly effective.
Heading into WW84, director Patty Jenkins and her team (which now includes Gal Gadot as a producer) had a reputation to uphold, and then some.
“There was just no way we’re going to take any shortcuts,” Gadot said during a WW1984 press conference. “And we’re just going to raise the bar and give everything we have because we knew people were...

Most actors go their entire career without taking part in a groundbreaking film, but Connie Nielsen has had the good fortune to have done it twice thanks to 2000’s Gladiator and 2017’s Wonder Woman. In the grand scheme of things, the opening scene of Wonder Woman 1984 serves very little purpose in the overall narrative other than bringing back Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright as Hippolyta and Antiope for brief cameos and foreshadowing the reveal of the Golden Eagle armor later on in the movie, and it feels like it was designed to kick things off with a bang to plunge audiences right back into the world of Themyscira.
The prologue also features another returning cast member, though, with actress Lilly Aspell reprising her role as the young Diana from the first installment, and the 13 year-old acquits herself exceptionally well in the action stakes. After all, as the daughter of a jockey and an equestrian show jumper, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Aspell proved to be a dab hand at careening through the wilds of the Amazon’s homeland on horseback.

Wonder Woman 1984 has brought its message on the importance of truth onto screens worldwide. With retro stylings and a Hans Zimmer score, the second installment in Diana Prince’s story shows a more mature Amazonian who has adapted to man’s world and her solitary life, developing her skills as a superhero and her ability to keep out of the limelight.
Wonder Woman 1984 takes place well before the introduction of the other heroes of the Dceu and largely exists as a standalone film. However, there are still plenty of references to Diana Prince’s own history across the comics, small screen, and previous films.
We’ve used all the wisdom of Athena to chronicle as many Easter eggs as we can spot, but as always, if we’ve missed anything, do let us know in the comments.

A floppy-haired con artist, known for his TV presence in which he pretends to be a successful businessman, gets his hands on the ultimate power, and then when he proves incapable of wielding it, he’d rather destroy the world than acknowledge his own petty inadequacies. It’s a wild fantasy scenario, to be certain, but it provides the satirical underpinnings for “Wonder Woman 1984” to mock the rapacious greed of the Reagan era and its ongoing reverberations into the 21st century.
The film’s wickedly pungent social satire must occasionally step aside for superheroics, of course. And while the reteaming of Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins provides the expected thrills and excitement, this sequel shares the significant flaw of its predecessor: Both films graft an unwieldy and effects-heavy finale onto a movie that had managed to create relatable characters and situations, even when both are larger than life. Wonder Woman returns in Patty Jenkins’ eagerly anticipated set-in-the-’80s superhero sequel, starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Striking a confident balance of action, emotion and character, it’s the comic book blockbuster you’ve been waiting for.
Scripted by Jenkins, alongside comics honcho Geoff Johns and co-writer David Callaham, Wonder Woman 1984 takes place, as the title suggests, forty years after the end of the previous movie, with Diana / Wonder Woman (Gadot) living in Washington D.C. and working in the Smithsonian. Though she distracts herself with costumed crime-fighting, she still pines for lost love Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), so she’s understandably knocked for six when he suddenly reappears in her life, after she unknowingly makes a wish on a mysterious object known as a Dreamstone.

EntertainmentThe ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel will release in India across theatres on December 24 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.Tnm StaffHBO Max on Wednesday released the opening scene of the superhero movie, Wonder Woman 1984, which gives a peek into the life of young Diana in the fictional state of Themyscira, ruled by Amazons or warrior women. It starts with the young Diana (played by Lilly Aspell) running through the lush green forest in Themyscira to a huge stadium, where the warrior women are sitting in the amphitheatre, watching the majestic games. The young Diana then joins other older, competing warrior women. As she starts running in the competition, the scenes cut to older Diana (played by Gal Gadot) running through a street in a city, interspersed with scenes from Wonder Woman 1984 trailer. “Greatness is not what you think,” Robin Wright’s warrior leader Antiope tells the young Diana Prince (Lilly Aspell) at the start of Wonder Woman 1984 during a sequence depicting something akin to the Themysciran Olympic Games. “Pace yourself and watch.”
It’s an electric opening which sees a stadium full of women cheering the acrobatics of the island’s finest as they shoot, dive, leap, swing, and ride their way through a complex course to well-earned victory. The first superhero movie to be released during the pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 has had to overcome obstacles of its own – primarily its release date and platform. Landing almost concurrently in cinemas and on VOD this Christmas is a different outcome to the one director Patty Jenkins and her cast and crew would have expected when they were filming back in 2018, yet it’s arrival in 2020 marks something of a shining light in a dismal year.

With just a single dedicated feature under her belt — the Patty Jenkins-directed 2017 smash hit “Wonder Woman” — star Gal Gadot’s iteration of the beloved DC heroine has already managed to span the earliest years of the Dceu, thanks to appearances in the team-up features “Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” But as the timeline of this particular blockbuster franchise only continues to tangle itself, from the addition of the upcoming “Snyder cut” to a new take on “The Suicide Squad,” its most human superhero is tasked with a very modern problem indeed: where can she possibly go next?
It’s the sort of issue that will, unfortunately, continue to knot the ever-expanding world of franchise filmmaking, the kind of creativity rooted in timelines and making them work. Franchise filmmaking has narrowed plenty of good ideas (and characters!), boxing them into not just time and place, but backstory and personality.

Lilly Aspell is barely a teenager, but she’s already on her way to become a well established presence in the acting world. Over the course of just a few years, she’s already become an international star. She made her film debut as young Diana in the 2007 film, Wonder Woman, and she has reprised the role for the upcoming sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Despite being new to the industry, Lilly already handles herself like a seasoned vet, and she has shown that she has the talent and maturity to take on big roles. With lots of big moments ahead of

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is still the most critically acclaimed installment in the history of the Dceu, meaning expectations are much higher for the sequel. Unfortunately, Wonder Woman 1984 has already been subjected to multiple delays, and at this stage, there’s still no guarantee that it’ll hit theaters as scheduled on Christmas Day as Warner Bros. continue to shuffle their major titles around the calendar.
Gal Gadot’s return as Diana Prince was originally set for December of last year before being moved forward to November and then shunted all the way back to June 2020. Of course, that never happened given the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, and after being rescheduled again to August and then October, the most recent date was staked out last month.

"I think these dreams are the future." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a sci-fi action thriller titled Extinction, the latest film from Australian filmmaker Ben Young (Hounds of Love). This feature story involves an alien invasion that arrives after a father starts having nightmares predicting their attack. He learns more about himself as he takes his family and tries to survive. Michael Peña stars in this, along with Lizzy Caplan, Mike Colter, Israel Broussard, Emma Booth, Tom Riley, Lilly Aspell, Erica Tremblay, and Amelia Crouch. This looks crazy cool, holy hell, where did it come from? Netflix loves to surprise us with something big out of nowhere. I'm digging the visuals in this, but I'm not sure if the story is trying too much at once. We'll find out very soon - the film is available at the end of the month. Check it out. Here's the...

Netflix continues to make moves, and in their latest deal the streaming service has purchased worldwide rights for the sci-fi thriller Extinction from Universal only two months after Universal pulled it off its schedule. Variety reports that Netflix plans to release Extinction later this year. The news comes four days after it began streaming J.J. Abrams’ The Cloverfield Paradox immediately after the Super Bowl, and two weeks after sources revealed that Netflix was buying the rights of what was then called “God Particle” from Paramount.
Extinction stars Michael Pena (Ant-Man) and Lizzy Caplan (Now You See Me 2 and Allied) as a husband and wife. Pena's character has recurring nightmares of losing his family when that bad dream becomes a reality when the planet is invaded by an alien force bent on destruction. Fighting for their lives, he comes to realize an unknown strength to keep his family safe from harm.

Wonder Woman is here to straighten things out, and put all those squabbling men in their place. A woman superhero movie was long overdue, and Wonder Woman is a terrific character. Many agree that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was the highlight of the ponderous Batman Vs Superman. Having a woman director, Patty Jenkins, at the helm is just that much sweeter.
The good news is that Wonder Woman is a much better movie than Batman Vs Superman and Gal Gadot is terrific in the role, particularly wonderful in the action sequences. While Gadot is perfect as Wonder Woman and the action sequences are spectacular, the bad news is that the film takes awhile to get rolling after a good start on the island of the Amazons, gets dull in the middle,...

The DC Cinematic Universe that Warner Brothers is sporting has had a bit of a rough beginning to it. Ever since the Christopher Nolan trilogy of Batman movies concluded, their attempt to reboot things with Superman and then Batman has been met with less than critical acclaim. Man of Steel had a mixed response, while both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were outright panned. This week, however, they have what looks to be their first well reviewed blockbuster in Wonder Woman, which is notable for many reasons. Not only could it be righting the DC ship, it finally represents a big screen female superhero. A long time coming, no doubt. Luckily, expectations have been met, or perhaps even exceeded. Kudos to all involved. It took decades to make this one happen, but it was worth the wait. The film is an origin story for the world’s biggest female superhero.
