Angelica Ross, known for her work in “Pose” and “American Horror Story,” said Ryan Murphy left her “on read” about a seemingly scrapped season of “AHS” that would feature a cast led by Black women.
Ross posted screenshots of emails sent between herself and the prolific producer dating back to July 2020 on Monday, in which Murphy seemed to confirm the existence of the season and asked Ross for guidance on which other women should lead the installment.
“Remember your idea about a Horror seasons starring Black women? Well I’m doing it,” Murphy wrote in an email to Ross on July 3, 2020, according to the screenshot. “Not sure of the story yet, but we will start a writers room in the fall. Along with you, who are the four women I should get? I think you, Keke Palmer, Gabby … not sure of the fourth?”

Canceled Fox musical drama “Star” appears to be making a comeback – as a televised movie, according to co-creator Lee Daniels.
“The bad news is that ‘Star’ is not getting picked up for series,” said Daniels in a video post on Instagram, calling the explanation “too long of a story to cry about.”
“The good news is: we’re doing a movie of the week to wrap things up for you all,” he said, adding, “We’re going to make something real special for you to scream about, with all of our cast members – even the dead ones.”
“Star,” a drama series about three girls’ rise to fame, was canceled in May after three seasons on the air. Co-created by Daniels and Tom Donaghy, the show was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Lee Daniels Entertainment. Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Queen Latifah, Quincy Brown and Amiyah Scott starred in the series.

The cancellation of musical drama Star was a “tough choice” for Fox but came as it wanted to give Empire the “send-off it deserves”.
Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier told Deadline that the Star cancellation was tied in to the fact that it wanted to prioritize Empire as it moves into its sixth and final season.
Speaking on Fox’s upfronts press call, Collier said, “We looked at our priorities and were trying to prioritize giving Empire the send-off it deserves. The move [of Empire] to 9pm, made it a challenge because Star was always the lead-out from Empire and obviously we don’t have the 10pm hour, so it was another tough choice in a year where we were prioritizing Empire and obviously some of the other shows that we’ve put on the schedule.”

“Star” has been canceled after three seasons at Fox.
The musical drama from Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy told the story of three girls’ rise to fame. It starred Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Queen Latifah, Quincy Brown and Amiyah Scott.
Daniels, Pamela Oas Williams and Karin Gist were executive producers; Gist was also the showrunner. The series was a production of 20th Century Fox Television in association with Lee Daniels Entertainment.
The show was one of two Daniels had at Fox, the other being “Empire.” “Empire” was recently renewed for a sixth season despite the controversy surrounding series star Jussie Smollett. Smollet’s contract with the show has been extended but there are currently no plans for him to return for the show’s new season.
Earlier today, Fox also canceled freshman drama “The Passage” and comedy “The Cool Kids,” while “Lethal Weapon” was also canceled after three seasons.

Fox’s music drama Star has been canceled after three seasons. Its producing studio, former Fox sibling 20th Century Fox TV, is already shopping it to other platforms.
Star’s cancellation is not unexpected. As we noted in our story yesterday on Fox’s decision to pick up four new drama series, with a fifth pending, the move did not bode well for the network’s bubble dramas Star, Lethal Weapon and The Passage. All of them were canceled today.
Created by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy, Star followed three talented singers – running from their pasts and desperate for a new start – with ambitions of stardom, as they navigate the cutthroat music business.
The series spent most of its run paired with Fox’s hip-hop family drama Empire. Family soap pilot Filthy Rich, whose series pickup at Fox is pending, is being eyed as a companion for Empire.

Representation for Lgbtq actors of color has been given a bigger platform in recent years, thanks to the success of shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Pose,” and films like the Oscar-winning “Moonlight.” But as the nuances surrounding diversity continue to expand and evolve, these “double minority” actors still often find themselves as spectators, in an industry where the desire to be seen can often outweigh the images being presented.
As we approach Black History Month in February, Variety spoke to five black Lgbtq actors about their struggles for visibility in the industry, the shows, books and films that paved the way for them, and what needs to be done for more queer black voices to enter the arena.
What are some challenges you have had to face as a member of the Lgbtq community and a black actor in Hollywood?

This year Lgbtq Pride month coincides with the nomination process for the Emmy Awards, and while there have been notable increases in Lgbtq visibility on the nominees list in recent years, Lgbtq actors are still often overlooked and underrepresented, particularly in television drama categories.
Historically, nominations for Lgbtq actors have been limited to the comedic categories, a partial reflection of a dearth of active out actors, as well as few meaningful Lgbtq storylines in dramatic series and the lingering effects of the closet. Out actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Tituss Burgess, Lily Tomlin, Cynthia Nixon, Kate McKinnon, Jane Lynch, and Jim Parsons were all deservedly recognized in lead and supporting categories in the comedic genre; many of them have even received multiple nominations and wins.

Fox has given a third-season renewal to Star, its music-themed drama co-created and executive produced by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy.
The series is produced by 20th Century Fox TV in association with Lee Daniels Entertainment. All series renewals and new series pickups at Fox so far this season have gone to shows from the network’s current studio sibling.
Boosted by having Empire as a lead-in, Star has averaged a 1.9 adults 18-49 Live+7 rating to rank just behind 9-1-1 and Empire on the list of Fox’s highest rated series in the demo; its multi-platform audience of 7.2 million, up +71% versus its Live + Same Day delivery. While these are solid numbers, Star also is expensive to produce, and its international sales have been challenging, which made the renewal decision a bit more complex.

There’s a lot I’m very excited about returning: “BoJack Horseman” Season 4, as just one example, is truly extraordinary. The latest trailer teased a lot of exciting developments about the new world order descending upon the hacker drama; plus, it’s a show that always has at least one big secret up its sleeve.
