As undeniable pop goes, it’s hard to top “The Middle,” the unstoppable 2018 banger that brought together new-country heavyweight Maren Morris, German-Russian DJ Zedd (a.k.a. Anton Zaslavski), and the Edm duo Grey. The unlikely collaboration spent 40 weeks on the pop chart and was used in a Target ad; to date it’s logged over 4 billion streams. “‘The Middle’ was a once-in-a-lifetime song,“ Morris tells Rolling Stone. “It’s definitely one of the biggest songs I’ve been a part of, and it really opened me and my work...

Even though Sarah Aarons had already signed to help write songs for “Trolls World Tour,” it was a chance meeting with Ludwig Göransson at a café that led to the session where “The Other Side” was composed. “He said, ‘We’re trying to write the end song with Justin. Do you want to come?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, I can make time for that,'” she tells us in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). As she was in the studio with Ludwig, Justin Timberlake and Max Martin the song came together through synthesizers, chords and bass lines. When Aarons did the demo vocals with Timberlake, he realized that the song should be a duet. “Justin said, ‘Someone else needs to be on this with me.’ I was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be sick if it was Sza,’ and left it and then a few weeks later,...

Coming off the heat of the first DreamWorks Animation movie Trolls, a bonanza musical that saw its tune “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Justin Timberlake get nominated for a Best Song Oscar on top of going quadruple platinum, the sequel Trolls World Tour was always going to be more music, more color, more glitz and more glamour.
“We want it to feel like a concert at the end of the film, even at home. We pushed the look of the film, pushed the scope with tons more music than the first film,” says director Walt Dohrn, who joined Timberlake on the movie’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film awards-season event.

The Focus Features musical dramedy The High Note is looking to hit exactly that as it lands on-demand starting today. Directed by Late Night‘s Nisha Ganatra from a script by Flora Greeson, the film was originally set to hit theaters on May 8 but, like many films, the film adapted and shifted to a digital. However, with theaters slowly opening their doors, the film will be singing its way to approximately 100 theaters — most of the drive-in theaters.
Set in the world of the Los Angeles music scene, The High Note follows singing superstar diva Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross) and her overworked personal assistant Maggie (Dakota Johnson) who has dreams of becoming a music producer. When Grace’s manager (Ice Cube) presents her with a choice that could alter the course of her career, Maggie and Grace come up with a plan that could change their lives forever.

For the animated musical “Trolls World Tour,” DreamWorks producer Gina Shay racked up her share of frequent flyer miles over four years — traveling to New York City for reggaeton superstar J Balvin, South Korea for K-Pop girl group Red Velvet and Stockholm for star and music curator Justin Timberlake. “It felt like I was going around the world collecting people’s voices,” she says.
Singing voices, that is. Nearly 40 tunes are woven into the fabric of the film, which tells the tale of hard rock royals trying to overtake competing genres including pop, country, funk, classical and techno. “Different tribes of trolls celebrating different genres of music,” says Universal’s head of film music Mike Knobloch.
Adds Shay: “We wanted people to come together and telling that story through musical genres seemed like a clever way of doing it without feeling preachy.”
That’s no small feat when it comes to using popular songs.

Sza and Justin Timberlake released “The Other Side,” the first song from the upcoming “Trolls World Tour” soundtrack.
Of course, Timberlake’s Grammy-winning 2016 hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” from the first “Trolls” film, was one of the most massive hits in a career filled with them, and like that song, this one involves co-writer Max Martin — the biggest hitmaker of the past 25 years — and sounds like it could be just as big.
The eye-catching video — a throwback to Hype Williams’ 1990s fish-eye-lensed clips for Missy Elliott, Diddy, Mase and others — adds to the song’s appeal, and includes some comic elements as well: Watch for the moment when Sza wipes out on her towering heels.
The track was written specifically for the film by Justin Timberlake, Martin, Ludwig Göransson, Sarah Aarons and Solana Rowe (Sza) and produced by Timberlake and Göransson.

When Maren Morris first hit the airwaves in 2015, she did so with “My Church,” a gospel-sized salute to the redemptive power of singing along to Hank, Johnny and other country icons. She’s been diversifying that countrified image ever since. “80s Mercedes” traded the western wear of “My Church” for a palette of neon colors and acid-washed denim, while “Once” dressed itself up like a long-lost R&B ballad. Morris’ biggest hit to date, the international dance smash “The Middle,” even found her trying on electro-pop for size.

Last year Bruno Mars was the king of the Grammy Awards winning all six of his races. This year, one of the artists he bested for many of those prizes, Kendrick Lamar, leads with a whopping eight nominations. Many of these bids come for his work on the “Black Panther” soundtrack and the chart-topping single “All the Stars.” Likewise, Lady Gaga earned four nominations for “Shallow,” the love ballad from her film “A Star is Born.” Both of their songs also contend at the Academy Awards.
The four general field categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist — are the top prizes at the Grammys. While the nominees are drawn from across a variety of music genres, the winners of these Grammy Awards tend to be the biggest pop and rock acts like Mars, Adele, Taylor Swift, and Mumford and Sons.

When Maren Morris sat down to write her new song “Girl,” the first taste of her anticipated second album, she had confrontation on her mind. But midway through, she experienced an epiphany.
“I was writing it as a letter to another girl who I felt had disrespected me and was constantly trying to be competitive with me when I just wanted to exist in my own space,” she tells Rolling Stone. “But as we kept writing it, I realized I’m not talking to someone else — I’m talking to myself.
