When you think of Christopher Nolan, chances are you don’t really think of brevity. His films are very entertaining, no doubt there, but they tend to be quite dense pieces of cinema that clock in around or above two-and-a-half hours or so. Given the increasingly abstract subject matter he likes to deal with, the runtimes are often quite fitting, but they are long nonetheless.
With Nolan’s upcoming World War II film, Dunkirk, one would also expect it to clock in at around the same runtime. War films tend to be pretty epic in scale, and given that Nolan has discussed ad nauseam about how the film will be told from different perspectives, we wouldn’t have been surprised if it clocked in at closer to three hours.

Well, don’t go in expect another huge epic, as it sounds like Dunkirk may actually be a bit more bladder-friendly than we’re used to. According to THR, the runtime for Dunkirk will be one hour and 47 minutes — the typical runtime for your average non-blockbuster fare. What’s more, it’s a full 62 minutes shorter than his latest outing, Interstellar, and 41 minutes shorter than Inception.
We’re very interested to see what this means for the movie in terms of its pacing. Perhaps Nolan is making pains to try and be a bit more concise with his movies, or maybe it’s all to do with the more primal subject matter. He did discuss in the past that this movie plays out more like a thriller than a typical war film, so that likely has a lot to do with it. Regardless, it sounds like you’ll be able to drink that large Coke, after all, with little fear of having to get up in the middle of the movie.
Dunkirk hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
