When nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards were announced on Jan. 23, Guillermo del Toro‘s fantastical romance “The Shape of Water” led the way with a lucky 13 bids. Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk” reaped eight nominations while Martin McDonagh‘s character study “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” got seven. All three number Best Picture bids among their nominations and both del Toro and Nolan contend for Best Director. The other six Best Picture nominees in order of their total nomination count are: six-time contenders “Darkest Hour” and “Phantom Thread”; five-time nominee “Lady Bird”; four-time hopefuls “Call Me by Your Name” and “Get Out”; and two-timer “The Post.”
