“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is looking mighty as it heads into its opening weekend, earning an impressive $10 million in Thursday previews.
The muscular results come despite the fact that the film suffered meh reviews — critics faulted the latest clash of the primordial titans for hectic pacing and overstuffed plotting. Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman, for instance, dismissed the film as “overly busy boilerplate” (though he liked the finale). And yet audiences don’t seem to care about the middling notices. “Godzilla x Kong: New Empire” scored the best preview results of any entry in Legendary’s Monsterverse series, just ahead of 2014’s “Godzilla,” which earned $9.3 million while kicking off this whole scaly saga.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment co-produced “New Empire,” which cost $135 million. It was initially expected to open to a sizable $50 million to $55 million and could bring in between $80 million to $85 million at the international box office.

Louis Gossett Jr., who won a supporting actor Oscar for playing the hard-as-nails drill instructor in 1982’s “An Officer and a Gentleman” a few years after winning an Emmy for his role as the cunning Fiddler in “Roots,” died early Friday morning. He was 87.
Gossett’s family announced his death in a statement, writing: “It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning. We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
In Taylor Hackford’s “An Officer and a Gentleman,” Gossett’s Sgt. Emil Foley memorably drove Richard Gere’s character to the point of near collapse at a Navy flight school. Gossett was the first Black man to win the best supporting actor Oscar for that role.

Four years after Showtime’s award-winning Homeland ended its eight-season run, star Claire Danes and creator Howard Gordon are reuniting at Netflix.
The streaming giant has handed out a straight-to-series order for The Beast in Me, a limited series starring Danes and from showrunner Gordon.
Created by Gabe Rotter, Netflix says the mystery thriller revolves around “acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs, who since the death of her young son has receded from public life, unable to write, a ghost of her former self. But she finds an unlikely subject for a new book when the house next door is bought by Nile Sheldon, a famed and formidable real estate mogul who was once the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth — chasing his demons while fleeing her own — in a game of cat and mouse that might turn deadly.

Florence Pugh is back on a Marvel set. The actress shared a behind-the-scenes tour of the Atlanta set where she is currently filming the upcoming Thunderbolts on Wednesday.
“Hey guys, how are you doing? I know I’ve dropped off for a little bit, but that’s partially because I was whisked off to Atlanta to shoot a movie that I’m not really supposed to talk about,” Pugh said in a video posted to Instagram. “But I can show you things, sneakily, as long as you don’t tell anyone…I can show you a sneak peek of the set.”
Pugh plays assassin Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her character first appeared in 2021’s Black Widow and later in the Disney+ series Hawkeye.
In her video, Pugh appears in costume, lifting the camera to show off Yelena’s suit and then moving to reveal several of the structures under construction for Thunderbolts.

Almost a decade ago, in 2015, it was announced that a Sister Act remake was in the works. However, fast-forward five years to 2020, and with Whoopi Goldberg showing interest in reprising her role as Deloris Wilson, Disney opted for a sequel, Sister Act 3, as a direct to streaming movie for Disney+ in December 2020. In the years that have followed, the presumed sequel has been stuck in production limbo without gaining much needed traction. Despite its slow pace, however, Goldberg says Sister Act 3 is still in the works!

A kind word from Christopher Nolan meant everything to David Krumholtz circa 2007 and beyond. It’s a story that sounds a lot like Bruce Wayne’s final admission to Commissioner Gordon in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, as you never know just how impactful a random act of kindness can be for someone else. Roughly 17 years ago, the now Oscar-winning filmmaker was scouting for The Dark Knight at Los Angeles Center Studios, and Krumholtz happened to be there, shooting Numbers. That’s when Nolan approached the actor and paid him an unexpected compliment regarding his performance as mathematical genius Charlie Eppes on the hit CBS show.
From there, Krumholtz couldn’t help but hold out hope that Nolan would cast him someday, and the opportunity finally came in the form of Oppenheimer’s Isidor Isaac Rabi, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and endearingly loyal friend to J. Robert “Oppie” Oppenheimer...

The Walking Dead is over, but like the zombies at the heart (er, brains?) of the tale, the franchise lives on.
Clocking in at 11 seasons and 177 episodes all told, the AMC horror drama shuffled off into the afterlife, only to birth a bevy of spinoff shows, most of which center on beloved characters from the original series like the Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) reunion series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Beyond those continuing adventures, there are also the spinoffs without too many overt ties to the “flagship” Walking Dead, including the very first of these spinoffs, Fear the Walking Dead (also now in the grave, joined there by the two-seasons-and-out The Walking Dead: World Beyond and single season anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead).

Dev Patel makes his feature directorial debut with the upcoming action movie “Monkey Man,” which blew the roof off SXSW earlier this month and earned strong reviews, but getting the film made was no walk in the park. During a Reddit Ama ahead of the film’s April theatrical release, Patel told fans that directing, acting in and producing “Monkey Man” was “the most demanding thing I’ve ever done in my life” because “everyday we faced absolute catastrophe.”

Puppeteers working to bring Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock to life are speaking out about that moment when, on the Today show in February, comic actor Larry David physically attacked beloved Sesame Street favorite Elmo live on-air.
At a press event for the release of Apple TV’s Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock this week, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with puppeteers John Tartaglia (puppeteer for Gobo Fraggle) and Dan Garza (puppeteer for Junior Gorg), who said they were taken aback by David’s unplanned attack on the puppet, which they said could be potentially dangerous for puppeteers.
“You know, there was a person’s hand inside of there and that wasn’t a pretty planned thing. And so the puppeteer in me was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s super dangerous. Like, you just grabbed someone’s hand and twisted it,’” Tartaglia said, confirming that ultimately the puppeteer was Ok.

Any way you look at it, Joana Vicente had a difficult job.
When she assumed the post of CEO of the Sundance Institute in late 2021, the world was a year into a pandemic that made indie filmmaking, festival planning and fundraising all challenging. During her tenure, she had to walk a careful line between the wants and needs of the entertainment industry and the realities of running a nonprofit that had to capitalize on new, potentially profitable revenue generators like online offerings.
But after a little over two years, these problems are no longer Vicente’s to face, with the surprise announcement last week that she would be stepping down from her post.
Sundance insiders describe Vicente’s departure as amicable and preplanned, with her memo to staff noting, “I have decided that it is time to explore new opportunities and adventures.” But it caught festival regulars and industry insiders off guard.

Peak TV may have peaked, but there’s still enough overwhelming volume on the small screen that I was able to watch AMC’s Parish while pondering a very niche-y question: Was this the best American cable adaptation of a far more efficient British drama about a guilt-stricken father, played by a star of Breaking Bad, leaving a life of comfortable legitimacy to wallow in a New Orleans criminal underbelly overseen by a member of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s The Post?
For what it’s worth, I think I preferred Showtime’s Your Honor, but I don’t want to make it sound like this new six-part thriller is derivative of only one specific show when it’s actually derivative of an entire fourth or fifth wave of already derivative prestige dramas — in AMC terms, more Low Winter Sun than The Killing, much less Breaking Bad.

The studio announced Friday that Wolf Man, the werewolf thriller from filmmaker Leigh Whannell (Invisible Man), has delayed its release by three months and will now open wide in theaters Jan. 17, 2025. Wolf Man, which stars Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) as a man whose family is stalked by a dangerous predator, was written and directed by Whannell. It had previously been scheduled for a pre-Halloween release on Oct. 25, 2024.
Blumhouse and Motel Movies are behind Wolf Man, which also stars Julia Garner and previously had Ryan Gosling attached as the lead. Jason Blum produces the movie that reinvents the classic Universal monster and counts Whannell, Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira and Mel Turner as executive producers.
Additionally, Universal announced that Blumhouse’s The Woman in the Yard, which was previously set for theatrical release Jan. 10, 2025, has been removed from the calendar.

Ang Lee is once again looking back at Brokeback Mountain‘s memorable best picture loss to Crash at the 2006 Academy Awards.
Speaking with IndieWire, the filmmaker shared that after he won best director for the queer, modern-day Western, he was told by a stage manager to stick around backstage, as the film was expected to also take home an Oscar for best picture.
“I got my award, which was [second to] last to the big one, and I was walking off the stage, they called me down, and said, ‘Stay here. That’s your mark. Everybody assumes you will win, so stay at that mark,'” he recalled.
Lee continued, “Right next to the stage was the curtain. The next was best picture. ‘Stay here, just stay here.’ I saw Jack Nicholson, his profile, he opened the envelope, and I go, ‘Oh my God, oh my God.’ It took like 10 seconds before he announced,...

When it comes to the question of which character has the best rogue’s gallery, most people immediately go with Batman or Spider-Man. Some of the more initiated might even go with The Flash. But be encouraged to think bigger — much bigger.
Over 69 years, and four eras — Showa, Heisei, Millennium and Reiwa — Godzilla has faced many threats. While some have proven to be more memorable than others, they’ve all worked in the service of Godzilla’s longevity and legacy. Much of Godzilla’s lasting appeal, and how he subsists in pop culture, is due to the popular “Godzilla vs.” concept that has seen some of his greatest adversaries rebooted and reimagined through the eras, alongside the creation of new enemies — a more difficult but no less necessary endeavor.

Just one month after Revolt celebrated its 10-year anniversary, the company embarked on a rocky path and still faces questions about its future after founder Sean “Diddy” Combs stepped down as its chairman amid allegations of sexual assault in November.
Combs removed himself from the company after he was beset with multiple lawsuits, the first from ex-girlfriend Cassie, who accused him of sexual assault and other forms of abuse in an explosive lawsuit Combs quickly settled while denying the claims. Additional lawsuits were filed by others; the case against Combs grew even more serious March 25, when his houses were raided by federal agents as part of what was described as an ongoing investigation.
Combs launched Revolt with former studio executive Andy Schuon in October 2013 as an urban music-focused digital cable television network geared toward African American audiences, and remained a visible part of the brand until his departure. Yet despite...

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is separating from her husband just three months after regaining her freedom, she confirmed on social media this week.
“People have been asking what is going on in my life. Unfortunately, my husband and I are going through a separation and I moved in with my parents home down the bayou,” Blanchard wrote, referencing a reconnection she’s had with her father, Rod Blanchard and stepmom, Kristy. “I have the support of my family and friends to help guide me through this. I am learning to listen to my heart. Right now I need time to let myself find … who I am.”
The marriage of Blanchard, 32, to Ryan Scott Anderson, a teacher from Louisiana, in a 2022 prison house wedding appeared to be a turning point in the young woman’s tumultuous life, which before her time in prison was spent under the thumb of her controlling mother,...

Billie Eilish isn’t here for artists who put out multiple unique vinyls for their albums, unless they do so in a sustainable way.
The Grammy winner and her mom, Maggie Baird, recently sat down with Billboard to discuss how she’s constantly fighting for sustainability in her career — and has been since before she became famous. For her 2022 Happier Than Ever tour, she partnered with Reverb, a nonprofit that addresses environmental concerns in the music industry, to serve plant-based meals for the artists and crew. During her Lollapalooza set in 2023, she partially used zero-emissions battery systems on-site to set up a temporary “solar farm.”
During the conversation, Eilish opened up about one particular practice in the music industry that she finds completely “wasteful”: putting out multiple, unique vinyls for upcoming albums.

Kobi Libii’s debut feature The American Society of Magical Negroes starts on a promising note. Aren, a spindly and awkward artist (an endearing Justice Smith) loiters near a yarn sculpture in a gallery. He seems lost in the sea of roving patrons and bustling waiters. It takes a second for us to realize that Aren created the meditative wool work and is struggling to sell it to the mostly white collectors attending this group show. They find the abstract piece illegible; they repeatedly ask about the material (“Is it … yarn?”) while maintaining a distance. These brief encounters are a clever jab by Libii at a visual art world historically enamored of Black figurative artists.
Minor drama ensues after Aren is mistaken for a server by a patron and unceremoniously fired by his gallerist. Before he can think straight, the dejected artist finds himself touring the gothic halls of The American Society of Magical Negroes,...

After numerous women have said that they were punched in the face in recent, seemingly random attacks in New York, Bethenny Frankel has shared she’s among the victims of this alarming trend.
The Real Housewives of New York alum first shared her experience in a comment left on a TikTok made by a Parsons fashion design student, who was hit while walking home from class. Frankel wrote, “This is insane bc this happened to me a few months ago but I was embarrassed to say. I was on the Uws [Upper West Side]. Insane. I was taking video of a bakery.”
After her comment drew attention, Frankel made a TikTok of her own Thursday, detailing her experience.

The Disney family may have given up the reins of its business decades ago, but there is still no shortage of powerful families in media holding sway. Shari Redstone controls Paramount Global, though for how long remains unclear as she considers a sale. The Ochs Sulzbergers still dominate the board of The New York Times. The Murdochs own major stakes in Fox and News Corp. And Brian Roberts and his family lord over Comcast and NBCUniversal.
But, quietly, one of the original New York media families has amassed a multibillion-dollar fortune: the Newhouses. And while the descendants of Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr. don’t exert as much direct power over the majority of their holdings (for the most part, they lean on the professional CEOs at the companies in which they invest), their reach is vast.

On Oct. 7, when the Israel-Hamas war broke out, Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir was just one week away from starting principal photography in Bethlehem, 45 miles from Gaza, on “All Before You.”
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s long-gestating project reconstructs the 1936 farmer-led revolt against British colonial rule and the influx of Jewish settlements in Palestine that has been at the root of the conflict. The latest outbreak of violence came after a Hamas-led terror attack that left about 1,200 Israelis dead while 250 were taken hostage, with more than 100 believed to still be held by Hamas.
Now Jacir, who is based in Ramallah, the de facto capital of the Palestinian Authority, is anxiously waiting for a cease-fire that will put an end to the death and destruction and allow her to go back and shoot the drama. “It’s more important than ever to tell this largely forgotten story,” she says.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the Alec Baldwin film “Rust,” will remain in jail while her lawyers appeal her conviction in the death of the film’s cinematographer.
A Santa Fe judge denied a defense request for release on Friday, and refused to order a new trial in the case.
“Keep in mind there was a death that the jury determined was caused by her,” said Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer. “So I am not releasing her.”
Gutierrez Reed is scheduled to be sentenced on April 15, and faces up to 18 months in prison.
Gutierrez Reed was convicted on March 6 of involuntary manslaughter after a two-week trial. Prosecutors alleged that she inadvertently brought live bullets onto the set — a major breach of film safety protocols — and failed to properly check the rounds before loading one of them into Baldwin’s gun.

Courteney Cox may be answering the Scream call one again, with sources saying the actor is in talks for the upcoming Scream VII.
Cox originated the role of reporter Gale Weathers in 1996’s Scream, and has appeared in its five sequels. The return of Cox adds another jolt to the project, which has been revamped following the departure of star Jenna Ortega, the firing of actor Melissa Barrera and the exit of director Christopher Landon last year. Although prefaced with the vague assurance that it’s based on true stories, this comedy-drama by eminent British screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce (The Railway Man) and directed by Thea Sharrock (Wicked Little Letters) is a tidily assembled, happy-ending-hewing narrative package that revolves mostly around the fortunes of a half dozen unhoused men, competing for England in the Homeless World Cup.
Bill Nighy stars as the team’s manager, a former scout for major London football club West Ham, who takes the team to Rome, where he must also accommodate each player’s foibles and faults, including the arrogance of star striker Vinnie (Micheal Ward, of Empire of Light). After a short theatrical run in the U.

With swordfights, corsets, a sprinkle of magic and an array of truly magnificent hats (including one worn by a poodle), new Disney+ original series “Renegade Nell” has more than a touch in common with that other swashbuckling Disney staple “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Both are set at the turn of the 17th to 18th centuries and, as with “Pirates,” the period details in “Renegade Nell” abound. In Nov. 2022, just as the show moved into the final phase of production, Variety was invited to visit Ealing Studios in West London where the wood-panelled Stuart-era sets were studded with quill pens and...

Searchlight Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair’s South of the River Pictures. Under the new pact, the specialty studio, which has worked with Colman on “The Favourite” and “Empire of Light,” will develop and produce feature-length motion pictures with the production company.
South of the River Pictures was founded by Colman, Sinclair and their long-time partner in crime, Tom Carver, to develop and produce original scripted comedies and dramas with “an authored sensibility.” Colman and Sinclair have been married since 2001.
South of the River Pictures has a slate of projects that include feature films and TV series. Its first production was Sinclair’s multi-Bafta-winning TV series “Landscapers,” which was produced with Sister for Sky Atlantic and HBO, and starred Olivia Colman and David Thewlis as a murderous couple. It was nominated for best miniseries at the 2022 BAFTA TV Awards. “Wicked Little Letters,” the company’s first feature film,...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hopes to leave a big footprint when marching into theaters around the globe this weekend after starting off with a record $10 million in Thursday previews, the best showing ever for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse library, as well as the best preview of the year to date.
Warners is estimating a domestic weekend opening in the $45 million to $50 million range over the Easter frame, while at least one major tracking service is counting on $50 million to $55 million. Based on the preview turnout, New Empire could climb notably higher, unless it is front-loaded.
Overseas, New Empire is looking at an $80 million debut, which would put its global launch in the $135 million range.
The previews figure tops prior entries in the Godzilla MonsterVerse, with Godzilla (2014) opening to $9.3 million in previews, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) bowing to $6.3 million in previews and Kong: Skull Island (2017) nabbing $3.7 million.

The titular gentleman of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat played with sprightly joie de vivre by an enthusiastic Ewan McGregor. An aesthete with impassioned opinions about wine pairings, Rostov was born to live the life of leisure handed down to him by his landowning ancestors. The problem is that Rostov is a man unfit for his time. Before he can assume management of his family’s country estate, the Russian Revolution rudely intervenes. A populist poem from his student days spares Rostov the firing squad, relegating him instead to a lifetime of house arrest...

Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire delivered one of the most iconic movie kisses of the 21st century in 2002’s “Spider-Man,” but it was “kind of miserable” to shoot. Dunst is the latest guest on “The Jonathan Ross Show” (via The Independent) ahead of the release of her new movie “Civil War,” and she remembered how not ideal it was to kiss Maguire in the pouring rain while he was upside down as Spider-Man.
“I remember [the film’s director] Sam Raimi giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired but also he really wanted to make it special even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it,” Dunst recalled.
“It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him,” she added.

Recently, Christopher Nolan made an interesting admission: The most famous line from his fan-favorite Batman film, 2008’s The Dark Knight, wasn’t his creation and was a line that he initially didn’t quite get. Nolan said his brother, frequent collaborator and co-writer Jonathan came up with the prophetic line, “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
“I’m plagued by a line from The Dark Knight, and I’m plagued by it because I didn’t write it,” Nolan told Deadline last month. “My brother wrote it. It kills me, because it’s the line that most resonates. And at the time, I didn’t even understand it … I read it in his draft, and I was like, ‘All right, I’ll keep it in there, but I don’t really know what it means. Is that really a thing?...
