Poll: Anticipated Upcoming African American Films (Winter 2013 - Summer 2014)

February is Black History Month and the movies below chart several Black experiences over the past few hundred years. All of the films are either based on true stories or are documentaries. Which movie do you think illustrates a piece of Black history most powerfully? Celebrate and contemplate here. Note: Movies are in alphabetical order.

Whether they've already debuted at Venice, Telluride or Harvey Weinstein's movie grotto (face it, he must have one) these are the films that have to be seen at Toronto to consider your attendance a success. The tragedy is the screenings can sometimes be scheduled at the same time (don't ask us why) so sometimes seeing them all is not possible...but here's the list. One of the great things about Toronto, however, is the UN-Anticipated films, which are the surprises that often end up making the entire festival worthwhile. by Keith Simanton

Besides being the name of a shoe company, Nike is the Greek goddess of Victory, Speed and Strength (the Greek valued the last two in that order). She awarded the Laurel wreath of victory to winners in sports contests and in battle. When it came to war, she was Zeus’ chariot driver. She is the only winged Greek goddess. Her symbol is the same symbol that the shoe company uses. It represents her wings. Which of these 6.9 or better films that represents one of her attributes (contest or war victory, and contests of speed, and strength) would she give her award, the Laurel Wreath of Victory, to? Or better yet, you get to complete the sentence “And Nike’s Laurel Wreath of Victory goes to ______.” Submit your contestant’s entry forms here. That is the rating of the film that actually has her symbol appearing in it!

Using more than one language in a single film can accomplish many things, including illustrating how interconnected we all are, no matter where on the globe we may be or to what culture or cultures we may belong. Each of the following films uses two or more languages. Whether by creating authenticity, enhancing atmosphere, or showing how "small" and interdependent the world is, which movie uses the changing languages to best effect?
