Poll: What came first? The Chicken or the Egg?
**SPOILERS AHEAD** The following films feature the Predestination paradox which arises from time travel. It can be of two types : (a) A causal loop, where two events separated by time are the cause of each other. (b) An ontological paradox, where an object or some information has no origin. The protagonist, who's stuck in a causal loop, has no origin. -
The Terminator (1984)
Artificial Intelligence is invented by reverse engineering the technology present in the terminator sent from the future. The technology to create artificial intelligence has no origin. -
Interstellar (2014)
The coordinates to the secret NASA base were given to the protagonist by his future self. This information has no origin. Also, humanity being saved with the help of future humans is a causal paradox. -
Minority Report (2002)
The prediction that the protagonist will commit a murder, in fact leads him to the time and place of the crime. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy that has no origin. -
Donnie Darko (2001)
The titular character who gets stuck in a tangential pocket universe has to accept his predestined death in order to close a causal loop to prevent the primary universe from collapsing into a black hole. -
Looper (2012)
The lead character's future self tries to assassinate the younger self of a future villain. However, the young lead deduces that the failed assassination attempt will be the reason for the villain's origin. This is a causal loop. -
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
The multiple visits to the past made by the lead character become the very cause for going to the past. This is a causal loop. -
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Bill & Ted's band, that inspired the future generations, could not have been formed without the interference from the future. This is a causal loop. -
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
Planet of the Apes Franchise Humans travel into a future where the planet is ruled by intelligent apes. This eventually leads to the intelligent apes travelling to the past and overthrowing the humans to conquer the planet. The intelligence of the apes has no origin. -
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
To prevent his wife's death he foresaw in his visions, Anakin joins the Sith, which causes his wife to lose the will to live and die, thus causing Anakin's visions to become reality. This is a causal paradox. -
Kate & Leopold (2001)
Kate falls in love with a time traveller from the past, Leopold, who was brought to the present by her ex-boyfriend. After Leopold goes back to the past, Kate goes after him and consequently becomes her ex-boyfriend's ancestor. This is a causal loop. -
Somewhere in Time (1980)
An old woman gives the lead character the watch he had given to her younger self when he travelled to the past. The watch has no origin. -
The Final Countdown (1980)
A ship commander is transported to the past where he gets stranded. He would eventually go on to help design the ship. The concept of making the ship has no origin. -
Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982)
The lead character travels back in time which causes him to become his own ancestor, thus setting up the circumstances for his eventual time travel. This is a causal loop.
