In explaining the initial intention of the movie, Lucas confessed that the movie was to serve as a teaching tool – in addition to entertaining science-fiction fans. "It's a film for 12-year-olds!" Lucas said. "It was designed (with these messages): This is what we stand for. You are about to enter to the real world. Here's an idea of what you should pay attention to — friendships, honesty, trust, doing the right thing, living on the light side, and avoiding the dark side."
