Akira Buzz of the Week
While Taika Waititi is riding high on the excitement around Thor: Ragnarok, there’s a new buzz building: His name has been potentially attached to a new Akira movie. While Taika has not officially signed on for the movie, he has discussed his vision for the movie, noting that instead of trying to do a live-action remake of the popular 1988 anime movie, he would craft his own take on the original graphic novels. Taika also addressed the recent “whitewashing” controversy around anime adaptations like Ghost in the Shell and Death Note, which cast white actors in lead roles instead of Asian actors. Taika confirmed that his preference would be to cast Asian leads and would like to find some untapped talent. We wonder if he already has anyone in mind. While Taika is still not taken the directing role, he’s obviously spent a lot of time thinking about it.
