A tyrannical ship captain decides to exact revenge on his abused crew after they form a mutiny against him, but the sailor he targets had no hand in it.
The film was based on a trilogy written by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall: "Mutiny on the Bounty", "Men Against the Sea" and "Pitcairn's Island", although events in the last book weren't filmed. During the takeover, loyal crewmen are being shown bayoneted or struck with rifle butts by the mutineers. In fact, the Bounty was taken bloodlessly and Bligh was the only one to physically put up resistance.
