- The General: We're going to give the Rebs a darn good licking today! What are you having for supper tonight?
- Union Soldier: Hard tack and sowbelly.
- The General: I'll be around if you fix an empty plate. It'd be a great honor!
- The General: Howdy Jim, Corporal. How are those wounds?
- Soldier: Stinging some, General, but they're a-mending.
- The General: That's fine, fine. Anybody care for a chaw?
- Soldier: I'm thankful I'm still in one piece!
- Bill Porter: Me too, I got holes in my cap, holes in my pants, but there ain't no holes in me except the ones that was intended!
- Union Soldier: It's mighty pretty country around here. At least it would be, if they wasn't fighting battles all over it.
- Tom Wilson - the Loud Soldier: If the boys was a-standin' an' a-fightin', I'd stand an' fight too - I'd bet my boots on it, by Jiminy I would.
- Henry Fleming - the Youth: Tom, there's something I just got to get off my chest.
- Tom Wilson - the Loud Soldier: What's that Henry?
- Henry Fleming - the Youth: Yesterday when things started getting hot I was mighty scared.
- Tom Wilson - the Loud Soldier: We all was.
- Henry Fleming - the Youth: Yeah, but I lit out.
- Tom Wilson - the Loud Soldier: You mean you ran away, Henry?
- Henry Fleming - the Youth: Not very far, I was only scared for a minute, you understand. Just for a minute. Afterwards I was that ashamed, I couldn't get back in the fight soon enough.
