Paramount is currently in exclusive negotiations with Skydance on a potential merger, but there is another contender lurking — one coming from way out of left field.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Sony Pictures Entertainment is in talks with Apollo Global Management on teaming up for a potential joint bid to buy Paramount. There has not been an official offer on the table because of the formal exclusive negotiations, but this one threatens to be seismic. There is one degree of separation between the potential joint venture: Sony and the Apollo-backed Legendary Pictures already have a distribution deal.
When reached by IndieWire, Sony had no comment on the report. Same with Paramount, and Apollo did not immediately respond to our inquiry. We get it: we’re sort of speechless too.

Jeopardy! super-champ Matt Amodio has come to the defense of a fellow contestant who lost Tuesday’s (April 16) game after an unfortunate Daily Double blunder. On Tuesday’s episode, Eric Reimund, a substitute teacher originally from Collegeville, Pennsylvania, took on Veronica Tabor, a study abroad advisor from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and reigning champion Alison Betts, who at that point had won three consecutive games. Reimund gave Betts a run for her money, answering multiple clues correctly and finding both Daily Doubles during the Double Jeopardy! round. However, he found himself having to rebuild his score after he forgot to phrase his (correct) answer in the form of a question. Amodio took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on the brutal mistake, noting that the pressure can get to you under the bright lights. He also used the moment to explain the unusual strategy he adopted during his 38-game winning streak.

Jeopardy!‘s regular gameplay continues and with it the streak of five-day champion Alison Betts, who returned to play alongside new competitors Marko Saric and Rob Blumenstein. The writer and creative executive from San Jose, California had already won $121,500 over her first five games, but was the latest episode about to raise her earnings? Although they technically were by the way second-place prizes work, Alison walked away with $2,000 more in winnings but ultimately ended her streak. Jeopardy!, Inc. In the Jeopardy! round, Alison started strong, finishing in the lead with $5,000 against Rob’s $3,600 and Marko’s $4,400. But the tides changed in Double Jeopardy! when Marko took the lead after finding the third Daily Double, finishing the round out with $12,900 against Alison’s $11,000, and Rob’s $9,600. When it came to Final Jeopardy!, the category was “Alphabetical America,” with the clue reading, “Until Alabama became the 22nd state, this one was first alphabetically.

It takes a lot of confidence and courage to wager a “True Daily Double” on Jeopardy! Whether it goes right or wrong for the contestant at hand, that outcome will almost certainly change the game. Unfortunately, for one of Wednesday night’s contestants, it was for the worse. The contestants of the April 17–– episode were Alison Betts — a four-time champion who walked onto the stage with $107,700 in cash winnings under her belt — along with attorney Jeff Plate and business executive Vidya Ravella. The first round proved it was truly anybody’s game, even if Betts had the edge with the intimidation factor of being on a hot streak. After getting one-third of her answers wrong, she still led the pack with $3,600. Both Plate and Ravella were just behind her, though, and with much better statistics to boot: Plate got six right and one wrong, while Ravella got eight right and two incorrect answers.

Jeopardy! fans are seriously annoyed after an incorrect clue was featured during Double Jeopardy!
Reigning champion Alison Betts was playing against her competitors, Sarah Avery and Brian Phillips, when she opted for a $1,200 clue in the “American Birds” category.
The San Jose, California native’s clue was a video featuring a brown-winged bird as it fluttered its wings.
Host Ken Jennings read the clue to Alison: “The Cooper’s type of this bird of prey is soon to be the Tbd type as American birds will no longer have people in their common names.”
When Alison’s guess, “Finch,” was deemed incorrect, Ken told her the correct answer was, “Cooper’s Hawk.”
But, some hawk-eyed (pun intended) Jeopardy! viewers pointed out that the bird in question wasn’t a hawk but a falcon.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Tuesday, April 16, 2024 episode of Jeopardy!] Alison Betts is now a four-day Jeopardy! champ. Her fourth consecutive victory was nearly thwarted by her competitor, but a snafu in Double Jeopardy, plus a stumper in the final round, led to her lucky win. Competing in the April 16, 2024 match were Eric Reimund, a substitute teacher from Collegeville, Pennsylvania; Veronica Tabor, a study abroad advisor from Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Betts, a writer and creative executive from San Jose, California. Betts began the game with $97,500 in winnings so far, and she walked away having increased that total to $107,700. With a score of $5,200 and her opponents far behind, Betts led the first round. But Reimund caught up in to her in the second and found both of the Daily Doubles, but he made the biggest mistake you can make in Jeopardy that made him lose the second of these clues: he forgot to answer in the form ...

There's a lot to like about Jeopardy tournaments that bring back the show's top-performing contestants and pit them head-to-head in single-elimination battle royales.
But as the film studio execs who kept blowing up the superhero franchise until it exploded have recently learned the hard way, too much of a good thing can lead to alienated audiences.
And now more than ever, once you lose 'em, it's hard to win 'em back.
To be clear, there's no indication that Jeopardy's recent string of tournaments -- the longest in series history -- has had a negative impact on the show's ratings.
But "tournament fatigue" has become a buzzword in the Jeopardy-obsessed corners of social media, and media outlets have begun running editorials alleging that the show has lost its way by focusing too much on past victors.

Heading into the second game, Schneider already had one win after what host Ken Jennings called “an epic battle” with Groce on Friday. Schneider needed the last clue in the Double Jeopardy! round to keep the win within reach, Jennings noted, and was the only one to answer Final Jeopardy! correctly to win by $801. The first player to two wins is named Champion, take home $100,000, and earn a spot in the next Jeopardy! Masters. Schneider and Groce were tied at the first commercial break during the Jeopardy! round, but the former (thanks to a true Daily Double) held the lead at the end of it ($8,800 ...

Jeopardy!‘s 2024 Tournament of Champions continued on Wednesday night (February 28) as the divisive Yogesh Raut made his return to the Alex Trebek stage to take on Jake DeArruda and Nick Cascone. Raut, who won three games during Season 39, drew controversy last year when he posted a Facebook rant about Jeopardy!, referring to the long-running game show as “not important.” “Jeopardy has not nor will ever be the Olympics of quizzing,” Raut wrote at the time. “Jeopardy is not the problem; its centrality to American quizzing culture is…. There will never be healthy quizzing culture in this country until we can learn to stop pretending Jeopardy! is important.” Despite his comments, Raut was invited back for the Tournament of Champions, which kicked off last Friday, and he made the most of his opportunity. The concept of the long-running quiz show institution is so simple that it doesn’t leave much room for personality. Sure, we’ve gotten to know some super champs over the years like James Holzhauer, Amy Schneider, and Goat-turned-host Ken Jennings. But most contestants come and go with little fanfare. That was not the case for Yogesh Raut.
This blogger, podcaster, and writer from Springfield, Illinois immediately popped off the screen during his first game on Jan. 11, 2023. The stoic contender was not shy about sharing his advanced level of trivia mastery. Raut had participated in so many prominent trivia tourneys (though he prefers the term “quizzing”) that he was already well-known on the scene. In the interview portion of his first episode, he shared an anecdote of how Jeopardy! super champion...

The end of Jeopardy!‘s tournament deluge is (kinda-sorta) nigh, according to host Ken Jennings.
“We know there have been a lot of tournaments,” Jennings acknowledged to USA Today on Friday amid the delayed launch of the latest Tournament of Champions. “We are sympathetic with tournament overload… It will be early spring for the first time in many, many months, we will finally have new players back on.”

Jeopardy! has been in tournament overdrive for months, ever since the WGA strike paused episodes with new players, but now, Ken Jennings has given fans some idea of when regular episodes will return. The host and Jeopardy! G.O.A.T. spoke with USA Today ahead of the 2024 Tournament of Champions, which officially kicked off on Friday, February 23. During the interview, Jennings was asked when viewers can expect to see the return of regular, non-tournament play. “We know there have been a lot of tournaments. We are sympathetic with tournament overload, but this is one we’re really excited about,” Jennings said, referring to the upcoming Jeopardy! Invitational, which is set to air following the Toc. “For the first time this year we’re going to do a Jeopardy! invitational tournament where we bring back some favorite contestants from the past years, in some cases the past decades,” he continued. “And one winner...

At long last, Jeopardy! fans are getting the strike-delayed Tournament of Champions… though it’s not like there’s been a tournament shortage on the syndicated game show lately! This year’s Toc includes contestants from the past three Jeopardy! seasons, plus one celebrity player. Here’s a breakdown of the players, the match-ups, the odds, and the fan reactions. When does it premiere? The quarterfinals kick off on Friday, February 23, and will run until late March. Who is hosting? As per usual, former contestant Ken Jennings will helm the upcoming Toc. Jennings is now Jeopardy’s permanent and only host following Mayim Bialik‘s exit in December 2023. Who are the contestants? The 2024 Tournament of Champions will feature 27 contestants, 11 of whom are Season 39 alums with winning streaks of four or more games. This year, Jeopardy! producers also opened the Toc to Season 39’s three-game winners, of which there are eight.

Ken Jennings had a bit of a déjà vu moment in the latest episode of Jeopardy! as the host acknowledged a clue that led to his streak-ending game loss back in 2004. At that time, Jennings had been a 74-day winner, setting the record for most consecutive Jeopardy! wins during regular gameplay. During his 75th game though, a few flubs ended his streak as he placed second. One such fatal flub was the Double Jeopardy! round that included a category titled “Funny Hats.” When Jennings found the Daily Double in that category, he was unable to provide the correct response, costing him a pretty penny. Several of the clues from that category in 2004 surfaced in the newly-titled category “Hats.” Funnily enough, the resurfaced category and clue aired exactly 19 years to the date Jennings’ 75th game aired on November 30. (Credit: Sony Pictures Television / Courtesy: Everett Collection) The clue from 2004 read, “The name of this often brimless hat,...

Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant hailing from Queens, New York, enters the game with a carryover of 9,300 from the first match. Dennis Chase, a biotech project manager from Palm Springs, California, earned 3,000 in the previous game, and Jen Jazwinski, a youth services librarian from Algonquin, Illinois, starts the game with a score of 5,600. However, only one was able to walk away with the top prize and the illustrious invite to the Tournament of Champions. Nick was able to add $1,000 to his score after finding the first Daily Double. However, he could not escape second place, falling behind Nick before and after the break before moving on to Double Jeopardy. The scores going in were Dennis with $7,200, Nick at 5,800, and Jen with $1.600. Although Jen grabbed the remaining two Daily Doubles, she dropped 5,000 on ...

Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant originally from Queens, New York, Dennis Chase, a biotech project manager from Palm Springs, California, and Jen Jazwinski, a youth services librarian from Algonquin, Illinois faced off on Monday, November 27, and it was a somewhat evenly matched game throughout. Jeopardy!‘s 39th season is coming to its close soon and with it, the fun stories competitors share halfway through the first round of each game. In the July 27 episode, returning champion Lucas Partridge has a particularly entertaining anecdote to share with host Ken Jennings and the audience as he put his mom on the spot a bit, noting that he may be in trouble when he returns home. “Your mother I understand is a Jeopardy! fan, but a bit of a picky one?” Jennings began the conversation. “Yeah,” Lucas responded, adding, “So we would watch Jeopardy! as a family every night after dinner. She’s very particular about the way contestants play the game. She does not like when people jump around the board. She very much likes everyone to go in order.” Needless to say, anyone who saw Lucas play this game or the previous night knows he...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the July 26 episode of Jeopardy!] Policy analyst Alex Muhler and school counselor Lucas Partridge took on one-day Jeopardy! champion library circulation assistant Julie Sission, who has a total winnings of $11,210. And although Alex led the first round with $7,600, the tables turned quickly as the game transitioned to Double Jeopardy. Lucas took complete control of the game during Double Jeopardy, crawling from $5,000 to $15,800 by the time Alex finally found one of the Daily Doubles of the round. However, she answered unsuccessfully, losing $4,000 from her total of $11,200. After a few more clues, Lucas found a video Daily Double under the “Physics” category, and although he answered wrong, he only bet $100. Host Ken Jennings teased he could tell how much Lucas’ “loves this subject,” noting how he and everyone have avoided (and answered incorrectly on) the subject thus far. But he quipped again when Lucas got the final clue for the category correctly, saying, “Physicists everywhere ...

After nearly five decades of being a Daytime Emmys staple, the TV academy’s Best Game Show prize will instead be bestowed at their Creative Arts Awards ceremony from this year on. Following vows by several recent champions to boycott the “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions if it takes place amid the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, the show’s producers say they “never had any intention” of holding the annual contest “until the strike is resolved.
Furthermore, the show’s spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday, none of winners from the most recent season have even been contacted about participating.
The statement emphasized that the show has “a long history with and tremendous respect for the WGA and our writers,” and that “we would never air game material not created by WGA writers.” The statement also emphasized that it operates in compliance with SAG-AFTRA.
Instead, the statement says, the show will go into “a holding pattern,” postponing the Season 39 Tournament of Champions and instead producing new original episodes using material that was written before WGA went on strike. More details will be announced in August.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the July 25 episode of Jeopardy!] Two-day Jeopardy! champion and marketing director Taylor Clagett had to defend his $31,800 winnings against library circulation assistant Julie Sission and psychologist resident Andrew Knowles. And although the Final Jeopardy can come across as easy to viewers, some more obvious clues left our cast of contestants completely stumped.
