Young and naive Jennifer 'Jen' Stewart (Lucy Marlow) moves from Chicago into the Georgia mansion owned and lived in by her cousin Eva Phillips (Joan Crawford), Eva's husband Avery (Barry Sullivan), their two children Tissa (Linda Bennett) and Ted (Tim Hovey), and Avery's sister Carol (Betsy Palmer). At first, Jen adores Eva, but she becomes increasingly apprehensive as another side of Eva's personality begins to show itself when Eva will stop at nothing to prevent Carol's marriage to Judson Prentiss (John Ireland), once Eva's lover.
Queen Bee is also a 1943 novel by Edna L. Lee. The novel was adapted for the movie by American screenwriter Ranald MacDougall, who also directed the movie.
Carol points out to Jen a book about bees, mentioning specifically the chapter about the queen bee, who stings to death any rivals to her position in the hive.
As Eva tells the story, she and he were in a car accident thanks to him drinking heavily.
When Jud figures out that Avery intends to kill himself and Eva on the way to the party, he drives Eva himself, explaining that Avery told him to take her. It begins to rain, Judd speeds up and drives off the hill, but not before telling Eva that he's going to kill her so that Jud doesn't have to die, too. Meanwhile, Ted wakes up screaming that his dream has come true. When Avery learns that Jud took Eva to the party, he follows their route and finds their wrecked and burning car at the bottom of the hill. In the final scene, Avery and Jen go together to the police station.
