Based on a true story, “The First Error Step” made an instant hit in 1979 in Taiwan. It brought about a social realist film trend in the country, in a time of strict censorship and political repression. However, the “social realism” here is a euphemistic description for what is really a B-film genre, which exploited both sex and violence. By 1983, up to 117 such films had been previewed by the censorship committee. Eventually the Taiwanese government shut them down and showed them to filmmakers as examples of what not to do, before destroying most of the prints after their theatrical run.

Fifteen minutes into the debut episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast, the power is knocked out by a bomb cyclone. Her guest, Jane Fonda, continues speaking, unaware the connection is lost, and Louis-Dreyfus frantically attempts to reconnect, amid a few choice swear words and a blaring home alarm.
Rather than edit it out, Louis-Dreyfus saw it as an asset and kept it in the episode: “It’s just funny. So, I figured why not? Let’s include it. Everybody can relate too. I was so tense.”
The Veep and Seinfeld star was inspired to create Wiser Than Me after watching the 2018 documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts and reflecting that older women, despite having cultivated decades of wisdom, are rarely heard from. In each episode of the podcast, Louis-Dreyfus asks guests, including Diane von Furstenberg, Isabel Allende and Carol Burnett, about their careers and relationships, as well as their views on sex,...

Authors and married couple Nicola and David Yoon are self-described “romantic goobers.” So much so that after meeting in college, they quickly became friends, engaging in conversations about art, poetry, literature and, yes, even their love for romantic comedies and novels. There was one caveat to these rom-coms: They were all “exclusively white.”

Take a look at new images of actress Madelaine Petsch, aka 'Cheryl Blossom' in The CW's "Archie Comics" TV series "Riverdale", posing for the latest issue of "Cosmopolitan" magazine, wearing Zimmerman and Hunter, photographed by Eric Ray Davidson:
'Cheryl Marjorie Blossom' is the daughter of 'Penelope' and the late 'Clifford Blossom' as well as the twin sister of the late 'Jason Blossom', who suffered a mysterious tragic demise.
"Cheryl's relationship with her family seemed to be quite strained ever since Jason's death. Her mother blamed her for assisting Jason in his attempt to run away from 'Riverdale', leading to his death.
"As a high school student, she was head cheerleader of the 'River Vixens' and self-proclaimed 'Queen Bee' at 'Riverdale High School.' Cheryl was in a relationship with 'Toni Topa'z and subsequently joined the 'Southside Serpents'. However, Cheryl and Toni were later exiled from the Serpents...

This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.
The song is heard briefly coming from a radio in the background of one scene and plays for only about 40 seconds. Academy rules require “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody,” and the song was judged to not fulfill that requirement.
Other songs that didn’t make the list, although they were thought to be in the running, include “Uh Oh” from “Promising Young Woman” and “Boss Bitch” from “Birds of Prey.” Even without those, the list of eligible songs tops 100 for the first time...

Director Hou Chi-Jan’s labour of love “Taiwan B-Movie” is a documentary featurette (just under 1 hour) aimed at rediscovering a popular yet virtually unknown and long-lost chapter of Taiwanese movie industry. Linked to the troubled political moment under the martial law, the “Black Movie” episode worked as a buffer between the old style of filmmaking and the 1982 Taiwan New Cinema.
“Taiwan B-Movies” is screening at ImpressionTaiwan 2020 Taiwan Film Festival
Structured simply as an alternating of rare old clips and the talking heads of filmmakers and critics, “Taiwan B-Movie” introduces the birth of a film genre in the early 1980s called – in a rather misleading way – “social realism”. In fact, these social realistic movies sit proudly in the B-film genre, exploiting sex, violence and gambling, and merging all the above in the fresh and prurient sub-genre of female avengers, as they are mainly remembered for. Basically, the exploitation helped the bland...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Josef von Sternberg's Anatahan (1953) is showing June 4 – July 3, 2019 in the United States. Its premise alone is intriguing. A group of Japanese sailors are attacked at sea and become stranded on an island for seven years, with no knowledge of how the outside world carries on without them. A world, it’s worth noting, that is currently at war. The 1944 incident served as the basis for Michiro Maruyama’s 1954 novel, Anatahan, in which he detailed the ordeal and his time on the Northern Mariana island of that name. Intriguing, yes, but perhaps not a subject immediately associated with filmmaker Josef von Sternberg, a director best known for ornate, cloistered, exotic, and sometimes romantically convoluted dramas. Yet von Sternberg had, in fact, harbored an interest in Japanese culture and art for some time, and the prospect of translating Maruyama’s text to film,...

'Humoresque': Joan Crawford and John Garfield. 'Humoresque' 1946: Saved by Joan Crawford Directed by Jean Negulesco from a screenplay by Clifford Odets and Zachary Gold (loosely based on a Fannie Hurst short story), Humoresque always frustrates me because its first 25 minutes are excruciatingly boring – until Joan Crawford finally makes her appearance during a party scene. Crawford plays Helen Wright, a rich society lush in love with a tough-guy violin player, Paul Boray (John Garfield), who happens to be in love with his music. Fine support is offered by Paul's parents, played by Ruth Nelson and the fabulous chameleon-like J. Carroll Naish. Oscar Levant is the sarcastic, wisecracking piano player, who plays his part to the verge of annoyance. (Spoilers ahead.) Something wrong with that woman The Humoresque scenes between Paul and his mother are particularly intriguing, as the mother conveys her objections to Helen by lamenting, "There's something wrong with a woman like that!

Point of No Return: A Curtiz Classic Resurrected
While history prizes a 1944 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s story To Have and Have Not, there does exist a little seen (and more faithful to its source text) 1950 film version of the same story, helmed by Michael Curtiz, titled The Breaking Point. In retrospect, the earlier Howard Hawks version is all glitz and glamor and no guts, its claim to everlasting fame the guttural growl from Lauren Bacall concerning how to put your lips together to do something. Due to the insistence of screenwriter Ranald MacDougall (who wrote the screenplay for Curtiz’s Mildred Pierce and would later direct Ms. Crawford himself for his own debut in Queen Bee), the studio agreed to go forward with another adaptation, though got cold feet upon release due to star John Garfield being named in McCarthy’s witch hunt, and the film, unmarketed and unappreciated,...

Once upon a time I wrote a column called "Bad Movies We Love," and I feel close enough to you to admit that -- actually? -- I don't love bad movies. I would rather watch something good, weirdly. I'm sensitive when it comes to reserving time for woefully bad cinema, and that's why I want to help kick off your summer with the essential gay stinkbombs. Summer is the best time to gather your friends at 11 a.m. on a Saturday, gather around the thespian sorcery of Elizabeth Berkley, and cry, cry, and laugh until you're whole. Let's celebrate the worst of the best of the worst!

Joan Crawford, Cliff Robertson, Autumn Leaves Betty Barker (photo), Joan Crawford's longtime personal assistant, died last January 27 in Los Angeles. Barker was 95 years old. According to a paid obituary published in the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles-born (Sept. 30, 1916) Barker grew up in the L.A. suburb of Alhambra. Following a stint in Washington, D.C., in 1944 Barker returned to Los Angeles, where she began her secretarial career at Rko. Later, she was to become a personal secretary to Howard Hughes, who gained control of the studio in 1948. When Rko officially moved to Las Vegas in 1955, Barker opted to remain in Los Angeles. That's when she began her professional association with Joan Crawford, whom, as per the Times obit, she had known since the early 1930s. By then a Hollywood star for nearly three decades, Crawford was still busy, appearing in movies such as Ranald MacDougall's Queen Bee,...

I apparently missed out by not seeing "Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo" on the big screen, or so I am led to believe because it's one of those rare documentaries that is "gorgeous" and "cinematic." Honestly, though, I think it's mainly a good-looking film because of its locations. Not to slight cinematographer Sean Price Williams ("Kati with an I"), who really does do a wonderful job making beetles and other insects look like stunning little movie stars--he's to bugs what Ernest Haller was to Joan Crawford (yes, I just compared the 'Queen Bee' to insects)--but the rural scenery of Japan looks…...
