After participating at various film festivals, Anand Ekarshi’s debut feature film, Aattam, is now available for streaming on Prime Video. It centers on a critical moment in the lives of 12 artists who have dedicated a significant portion of their careers to performing plays for a theatre troupe purely out of passion. Their harmonious camaraderie and existential pursuits face an unprecedented challenge when the sole female member of the team becomes a victim of sexual assault. As the plot unfolds, it delicately peels away the layers of each character, unveiling complexity imbued with both self-interest and compulsion. The characters’ actions and their decisions give rise to twists and turns in the tale, erupting from their insecurities and primal quest for survival. The chamber drama is tautly constructed, delving deep into the social, moral, and personal dimensions that define contemporary Indian society. The filmmaker throws us into a labyrinth of conflicting...

Sunday saw the 96th Annual Oscars ceremony broadcast live across the world, and for UK audiences it saw the show broadcast on ITV. There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. When the news of this broke it was a welcome change to many viewers across the UK, as for years the exclusivity of Sky has left the award show inaccessible for many film fans. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Jim Sheridan has dispelled rumors around a possible return to acting by Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an Oscar-winning performance in the Irish director’s drama My Left Foot and also starred in his subsequent films In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer.
Rumors have been rife that Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, might be contemplating a return to the big screen after he was photographed by paparazzi coming out of a New York restaurant with Sheridan and Steven Spielberg in early January.
Sheridan said the trio had been holding a meeting about a possible reboot of his long-gestating project about the Kennedy family, focused on its social climber-patriarch Joseph Kennedy.
“We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor,” said Sheridan.

Irish director Jim Sheridan has sounded a warning on the state of the international film industry, saying “the whole film industry is in the emergency room.”

In his lofty and lengthy directorial debut, author, curator, film historian and former Viennale and Austrian Film Museum Director, Alexander Horwath, takes on a monumental task, superimposing the biographies of two giants: that of acting icon Henry Fonda and that of the United States of America. It is a personal essay about the United States of America perceived through the life and work of the Hollywood actor.
It is not the first time that Horwath has tackled the subject of Henry Fonda. In 2020, he curated an eponymous programme for Il Cinema Ritrovato, exploring the political persona of Henry Fonda through films that trace this particular narrative. A programme composed of films that outlined Fonda's legacy even if only partially, with some of his greatest films, including The Lady Eve, My Darling Clementine, Once Upon A Time In The West, Jezebel, Jesse James, 12 Angry Men and On Golden...

Upscale crossover sales agent Latido Films has acquired international sales rights to “Re-creation,” directed by legendary Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan, whose “In the Name of the Father” won a Berlin Golden Bear in 1994.
Starring Vicky Krieps, a Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner for “Corsage,” the docu-drama is co-written and co-directed by Irish artist and filmmaker David Merriman (“Rock Against Homelessness”). It will be unveiled to buyers at the European Film Market.
Like Sheridan’s prior five-hour documentary, SkyCrime’s “Murder at the Cottage,” “Re-creation” turns on what the earlier title calls Ireland’s most shocking unresolved crime whose victim, French TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, was battered to death at her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996.
A fiction/reality hybrid feature, “Re-creation” introduces a fictional jury, inspired by Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men,” which sifts through the facts, lies and convenient truths behind the murder, Sheridan told Variety.

Throughout the history of classic Hollywood, Henry Fonda was applicable across many genres. He thrived as a sheriff or cowboy in Westerns under the direction of either John Ford or Sergio Leone. He was the idyllic everyday individual in dramas, who expressed nobility during the Dust Bowl in The Grapes of Wrath or inside a jury deliberation room in 12 Angry Men. Most of all, Fonda carried an esteemed presence that made him perfect for playing historical icons or courageous men in stories about social issues. One might suspect that Fonda would have been too polished to effectively situate himself within the confines of an absurdist screwball comedy from a master of the genre like Preston Sturges, but one of his most charming roles, as a naive heir in The Lady Eve, shows him playing against type while also confirming his endearing screen presence.

Christopher Nolan’s list of movies he has praised is expansive and filled with classics like 12 Angry Men, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Lawrence of Arabia, and Blade Runner. And now you can add one of the biggest action franchises ever to that lineup. That’s right, Christopher Nolan loves the Fast & Furious movies and has no shame over it.
Nolan – both a creator and supporter of franchise movies – expressed his love of the Fast & Furious on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, also showing complete disbelief that the host had never seen a single entry in the 11-deep series. “I have no guilt about being a fan of the Fast & Furious franchise…A tremendous action franchise…You’ve never seen any of them? Filmmakers like David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, and the Coen Brothers relied on ingenuity and artistic invention to create masterpieces with their first films. Directorial debuts like "Night of the Living Dead" and "Citizen Kane" have had a lasting impact on the film industry and influenced future filmmakers and writers. Works such as "Eraserhead" and "John Wick" have inspired modern artists and changed the landscape of filmmaking in terms of style, genre, and technical elements.
Many directors have influenced the film industry with prolific work, but only a select few have had so much influence with just their first film. It's rarely the case that a first-time filmmaker will have a significant budget to work with, adding to feats of such iconic debuts. Jack Lemmon was the two-time Oscar-winner who starred in dozens of films, working until his death in 2001 at the age of 76. But how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Lemmon won his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for “Mister Roberts” (1955). A second Oscar for Best Actor followed for “Save the Tiger” (1973), making him the first person to pull off victories in both categories. He competed six more times for Best Actor throughout his career.
He is perhaps best known for his long collaboration with Walter Matthau, with whom he made 11 films. In films such as “The Fortune Cookie” (1966), “The Odd Couple” (1968), and “Grumpy Old Men” (1993), Lemmon’s fastidiousness played beautifully off of Matthau’s scruffiness.
On the small screen, Lemmon earned Emmys for “‘S Wonderful, ‘S Marvelous, ‘S Gershwin” (Best Variety Performer in 1972) and...

In the "Twilight Zone" episode "A Game of Pool", Jack Klugman plays a would-be pool champion named Jesse who feels that he would be more widely recognized for his billiard skills, were he not living in the shadow of the late pool champion James Howard "Fats" Brown. Jesse posits that if he had had the opportunity to play against Fats, he would definitely win. In a supernatural twist, Fats (Jonathan Winters) arrives from the afterlife to accept the challenge. The ensuing game, however, comes with a stipulation: if Jesse wins, he will indeed be granted the lifelong reputation as the greatest pool player of all time. If he loses, he'll die in obscurity. Jesse accepts.
Throughout their game, Fats points out that living well and happily is more important than the hard-edged fame of being a great pool player. Jesse doesn't listen. He wants fame.
Jesse, perhaps shockingly, wins the game.

Some directors achieve critical acclaim with their very first film, such as Orson Welles with Citizen Kane, Sidney Lumet with 12 Angry Men, and Jordan Peele with Get Out. These debut films confront societal issues, challenge film conventions, and demonstrate emerging styles, setting an incredibly high bar right from the start. Filmmakers like Kimberly Peirce, Sam Mendes, and Kevin Costner make their mark with their debuts by subverting expectations, taking risks, and balancing innovation with accessibility.
Unlike most film directors who take multiple tries before making a masterpiece, some talented directors manage to achieve this remarkable feat with their very first film. It is exceedingly rare for a debut film to immediately reach the highest levels of critical acclaim and cinema excellence. Through a potent mix of groundbreaking vision, technical skill, and raw creativity, certain directors have pulled off this difficult accomplishment. Orson Welles made jaws drop with Citizen Kane,...

Adam Driver says "Who gives a s—t that it was two Italians back-to-back?" in response to being asked about portraying Gucci and Ferrari. Driver's acting ability is comparable to some of Hollywood's best thespians, in particular Henry Fonda. Driver's talent and career trajectory have allowed him the freedom to choose his roles based on creative fulfillment rather than monetary gain.
Is it fair to call Adam Driver the Henry Fonda of this generation? Driver’s versatility is certainly reminiscent of how Fonda could portray any role, whether it be Davis, aka the eighth juror, in 12 Angry Men or how he played against typecasting as the villainous cowboy, Frank, in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Driver certainly has that elite level of acting acumen, but Driver has, quite by happenstance, taken on the roles of two well-known Italians in Maurizio Gucci and most recently, as Enzo Ferrari.

Henry Fonda is a Hollywood titan who breathed life into over 70 movie characters in his career of more than five decades. He collaborated with some of the greatest filmmakers to ever tread the streets of cinema, including John Ford, Sergio Leone, Alfred Hitchcock, and Mark Rydell, among others. With John Ford, he made nine movies, among them 1946's My Darling Clementine, and most notably, his 1940 novel adaptation The Grapes of Wrath, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination. In the film, Fonda plays a frontman for the Toad family as it migrates from Oklahoma to California for a better life during the Great Depression. Not surprisingly, The Grapes of Wrath makes it into Fonda's favorite films, in second place. Fonda is also fond of the 1943 psychological Western The Ox-Bow Incident, in which he watches helplessly as three accused people are executed by a mob without a fair trial. Fonda's favorite film,...

Seeing two towering individuals portrayed by actors with incredible talent is never a chore.
Freud’s Last Session finds Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud welcoming Matthew Goode as C.S. Lewis, who at the time had only just begun his career of Christian leaning works, carrying on a conversation about the existence of God.
It sounds like a discussion for the ages from two brilliant minds who had more than their share to say on the matter.
The film is based on a 2009 play by and adapted for screen by Mark St. Germain.
Reviews for the play with stage actors at the helm were raving about the quality of the performances as well as the taut writing about a subject many are leery of discussing at all -- the presence of God.
Freud and Lewis, by all accounts, never actually met, although Freud did host an unknown scholar from Oxford shortly before his death.

Sidney Lumet was one of the preeminent New Hollywood directors, responsible for classics like 12 Angry Men, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon. He was trained during the golden age of television in the 1950s, which shaped his energetic, collaborative filmmaking style and his preference for realistic storytelling. His movies are usually character studies or psychological dramas, frequently exploring themes of family life and justice, often involving the legal system and the media. He was also infatuated with New York City, using it as the setting for most of his films.

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”
“Dearest Bill, Somewhere you’ll be singing Let It Be Me and challenging heavenly choirs to look into your Ebony Eyes,” Andrew Lloyd Webber tweeted. “The theatre will...

The filmmaking legend and one of the last standing titans of New Hollywood, William Friedkin, died last month. Tributes have poured out around the globe in the form of heartfelt open letters from collaborators, unearthed clips from the bombastic director's interviews and home video commentaries, and just about every repertory cinema in the country programming special Friedkin retrospectives. Now, we've gotten our first look at the best thing to remember Friedkin by: his last film.
"The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" is by this point a classic U.S. text, adapted and re-adapted for the stage and screen numerous times since its original 1951 publication. It originated as a novel called "The Caine Mutiny" by Herman Wouk, and it won its year's Pulitzer Prize. Wouk then adapted the novel into a play in 1953, and it became another smash hit. Charles Laughton directed Peter Fonda in the lead role once it hit Broadway. It...

Though “Daddio” is an intimate chamber piece between Sean Penn as a taxi driver, and Dakota Johnson as a passenger trying to get from John F. Kennedy airport to Hell’s Kitchen, it focuses on a near universal issue, especially coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We don’t talk to each other anymore, and we’re terrified of talking to people that are different from us,” said director Christy Hall to IndieWire.
This love letter to New York, and the power of human connection, was the screenwriter and playwright’s spec script that got her the job running acclaimed Netflix YA series “I Am Not Okay With This,” a job that paired her with executive Ro Donnelly. “‘Daddio’ was forever in my mind, so when I left Netflix I was like, ‘God, that role is so perfect for Dakota.’ We made it happen,” said the producer who runs TeaTime Pictures with the star.

12 Angry Men started as a teleplay, not a book, and gained popularity through its stage production and subsequent movie adaptation. The original movie received numerous awards and nominations, proving the story's enduring appeal. While there are books available based on 12 Angry Men, they contain the published script rather than a novelization of the story. A novelization may be possible in the future.
While many believe the 1957 movie 12 Angry Men started out as a book, this assertion is incorrect. In the courtroom drama movie, a jury deliberates whether a young boy is guilty of murdering his father and if he should get the death penalty. Though only Juror 8 initially dissents from a guilty verdict, he provides a compelling enough argument to sway the other jurors. This story is considered one of the cornerstones of the courtroom drama genre. It increased interest in the judicial process and addressed many...

Somewhere, at any given moment, there’s a film director adapting a stage play to the big screen. Yet it’s rare, and fascinating, to see a filmmaker steeped to the gills in cinema as cinema who also has a grand obsession with the theater. Robert Altman was like that. His great films of the ’70s were so naturalistic they seemed to dissolve the edges of the movie frame, yet in the ’80s, starting with “Come Back to the Five & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean,” he adapted nine plays in a row, the last of which, in 1988, was a darkly solid made-for-tv version of “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.”
William Friedkin, the legendary director who passed away last month, just before his 88th birthday, represents another case like Altman’s. In the early ’70s, when Friedkin commandeered Hollywood and the world with the extraordinary one-two punch of “The French Connection” (1971) and...

There is nothing extraordinary about Norma. A sweet-natured and caring elderly lady, she bears a crown of hair curlers on her head and the weight of decades of marriage on her shoulders. But today is Norma’s birthday and she has finally had enough of her daughter’s constant complaints and her husband’s barely concealed resentment. Written and directed by Emily Munster during lockdown No.1, Norma is a character study of a woman trapped in her house and in the memories of her long-lost youth, giving the nine-minute darkly funny short huge emotional heft and crowd appeal. Grounded by a winning central performance by Susie Blake, the film showcases the importance of dreaming and seeking happiness at every stage in life, without ever slipping into saccharine or self-pitying waters. We are celebrating the online premiere of Norma with cake and plenty of insights from Munster – from the reasons behind...

12 Angry Men is a movie with a simple premise, but the ending of its conflict and themes are incredibly complicated. Based on Reginald Rose’s 1954 teleplay, 12 Angry Men shows the deliberations of a jury on a murder case in which a young boy is accused of killing his father and facing the death penalty. At first, the jury is nearly unanimous in finding the boy guilty, but the deliberations continue when Juror 8 (Henry Fonda) dissents. Juror 8 single-handedly manages to convince the other jurors that the case has room for reasonable doubt, eventually leading to a 12-0 “not guilty” verdict.
Going into the ending of 12 Angry Men, Juror 8 has managed to get five of the other jurors on his side, completely splitting the jury. However, a vocal minority led by Juror 3 holds steadfast to the conviction that the boy is guilty. Combined with the stressors of the sweltering heat and peer pressure,...

Paul Newman's best movies span nearly half a century, showcasing his talent as both a leading man and an aged mentor or antihero. His widely renowned filmography earned him nine Oscar nominations, including a single win for Best Actor, and numerous other honors recognizing his many exceptional screen performances. With Hollywood being dominated by movie remakes in modern times, there are some films that should never be remade but probably will be. Iconic, era-defining movies have often been remade for modern audiences with limited levels of success. Some films like 12 Angry Men have been remade to a degree of quality with audiences enjoying the modern adaptation. In comparison, the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake was received poorly. Disney's live-action remakes have had varying degrees of success but show that Hollywood is still very much interested in adapting classic movies. While some remakes bomb at the box office, cashing in on well-established IPs makes sense for filmmakers.
There is a level of inevitability about some films being remade, with their iconic status making them more digestible for modern audiences. Even if people complain about constant remakes, curiosity about how certain films will hold up with a new cast,...

“Medusa Deluxe” is here.
Truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, it’s a murder mystery set in a hairstyle competition. All of the characters are hairdressers, who have very strong opinions on hairstyles and on who the likely murderer is. Oh and the whole thing is shot like a single take (think “1917”), which adds to the sense that you are actually there, at the scene of the crime.
And while it might be easy to identify some of writer/director Thomas Hardiman’s influences, he is more than happy to run through key texts. There are many different, very strong flavors in “Medusa Deluxe” and they all work incredibly well together.
TheWrap spoke to Hardiman about where the movie came from, why the single-shot aesthetic was so important and why he’d really love to direct a “Where’s Waldo” movie (hint: it has to do with the...

William Petersen was a theater actor from Chicago when William Friedkin changed the course of his life. In 1984, the Oscar-winning director tapped the then-unknown performer to play Richard Chance, a Secret Service agent willing to bend rules and break laws in order to capture a shadowy counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe) in “To Live and Die in L.A.” The crime thriller was a return to form for Friedkin, who had summited the heights of the movie business with “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” only to suffer a string of disappointments. Petersen and Friedkin would later collaborate on a Showtime remake of “12 Angry Men” and two episodes of “CSI.” Friedkin died on Aug. 7 at the age of 87, and Petersen shared his reflections on his “greatest mentor and most brilliant friend.”

To say that only William Friedkin could have remade 12 Angry Men would be patently untrue. Plenty of people could have remade Sidney Lumet's 1957 one-room drama. Paul Verhoeven could have remade it as a hyper-violent anti-fascist tale. James Cameron could have envisioned it as an underwater tribunal. Joel Schumacher could have done it with a black-light aesthetic and exaggerated codpieces. The truly accurate statement is that only William Friedkin could have gotten away with not only remaking 12 Angry Men in 1997, but as a TV movie for Showtime, starring two screen legends in the twilight of their careers, opposite an about-to-break-through James Gandolfini, all as a commentary on the O.J. Simpson verdict.

For the director who gave cinema the ultimate car chase in “The French Connection,” William Friedkin was remarkably at ease with films set in a single room, bringing several plays to the screen over the course of his career. The director — who died August 7 at age 87 — will have his final film screened out of competition in the Venice Film Festival next month, fittingly an adaptation of Herman Wouk’s play “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.”
Friedkin made his name (and won an Oscar) for “The French Connection,” followed immediately by the instantly iconic “The Exorcist,” but he never lost an abiding interest in live performance, even directing operas off and on for the last 25 years.
In fact, Friedkin was so taken with the 2004 Off-Broadway premiere of Tracy Letts’ play “Bug” that he phoned Letts directly to say he’d like to adapt it into a film — with star Michael Shannon. In one fell swoop,...

William Friedkin, the Oscar-winning director behind The Exorcist, The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., The Boys in the Band, and more, is dead at 87. Friedkin died in Los Angeles, said his wife, former producer and studio head Sherry Lansing.
Born on August 29, 1935, in Chicago, Friedkin started directing television before disgusting audiences with projectile pea soup and dealings with demons. Director William Friedkin, best known for his Oscar-winning “The French Connection” and blockbuster “The Exorcist,” died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 87.
His death was confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of Friedkin’s wife Sherry Lansing.
His final film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” starring Kiefer Sutherland, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Along with Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola and Hal Ashby, Friedkin rose to A-list status in the 1970s, part of a new generation of vibrant, risk-taking filmmakers. Combining his experience in television, particularly in documentary film, with a cutting-edge style of editing, Friedkin brought a great deal of energy to the horror and police thriller genres in which he specialized.

It’s pretty common for limited series to be Emmy-nominated for both writing and directing, as demonstrated by current dual contenders “Beef” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” plus “The White Lotus” and the four 2022 shows it knocked out twice. The same cannot be said, however, for TV movies, which compete directly against non-continuing series in the composite Best Movie/Limited Writing and Directing categories. Prior to this year, no telefilm had achieved this nomination combo since 2014, but Hulu’s “Prey” just closed the gap, signaling a return to form for the genre.
“Prey,” which premiered in August 2022, is also gunning for the Best TV Movie Emmy and picked up bids for its sound editing, picture editing and music composition. Set in 18th century North America and featuring a primarily Indigenous cast, it serves as a prequel to the 1987 theatrical horror film “Predator,” which is now the nexus of a seven-part franchise.

Few things are more elusive than the joint universal approval of both audiences and critics, but a handful of films have the Rotten Tomatoes scores to prove it. The perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes is an enviable prize; even one dissenting review can ruin a film’s chances of a perfect score. In 2021, Citizen Kane lost its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score after an 80-year-old negative review of the classic film was discovered. Even more illusory is the Rotten Tomatoes audience score, wherein the sheer volume of reviews makes a 100% score nearly impossible for a mainstream film.
