A San Francisco detective suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of an old friend's wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.
Kim Novak was borrowed from Columbia for the production, in exchange for a payment of $250,000 by Paramount to Columbia and the agreement that James Stewart would co-star with her in Bell Book and Candle (1958).

When the manager of the McKittrick Hotel first appears, we hear her say, "Yes?" to Scottie off screen, and in the next shot a moment later, we see her mouth the word without any sound.
The opening Paramount logo is in black and white while the rest of the film, including the closing Paramount logo, is in Technicolor.
