At night, protagonist and nurse go off to be alone in the desert. They lie side by side talking for a bit before she kisses him passionately; scene ends. From comments before they part, it is implied they have a connection, implying sex.

Three of the male characters spend much of the film without shirts on as they are in the desert.

The film's protagonist is an alcoholic due to stressful experiences in the war. His struggle with drink is a key theme in the film.

A man and his friend have a drink of whisky.

When packing for a trip a man insists on taking several bottles of whisky and is distraught when he loses these bottles.

A woman has a small cask of brandy and shares it with a man. She agrees to keep it from the alcoholic protagonist.

A man has several bottles of gin and begins to drink with the protagonist. A woman rebukes them for drinking too heavily. The man drinks this gin on a couple of other occasions in the film. One time he is offered water and rejects it, saying he needs a "real drink".

A group of people have a drink of beer each. Two of them down these in one go.

A woman is hysterical and is given a medical injection (we see the needle being injected) to put her to sleep.

Most of the main characters smoke frequently throughout the film.
