During WW2, Lieut. John F. Kennedy takes command of PT 109 to fight the Japanese in the Solomon Islands.
The real Barney Ross, who was aboard as a supernumerary on the night the 109 was rammed and sunk, appears in the film as the chief petty officer who chews out Kennedy.
Ens. Leonard J. Thom:
Mr. Kennedy? Ensign Leonard Thom, your exec.
Lt. John F. Kennedy: Oh, hi. Glad to meet you, Leonard.
Lt. John F. Kennedy: Welcome aboard.
Ens. Leonard J. Thom: How long did they give you to put it in shape?
Lt. John F. Kennedy: Well, we've used about half the time just talking right here.
Twice in the film, LTJG Kennedy is asked what time it is, and he responds with "quarter to two" and "two o'clock." A Naval officer would always answer in military time to another sailor. He should have said "1345" and "1400."
