Zee End Is Nigh
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the disappointed bride in the failed engagement between Zee and Sony India, has formally ended its quest for a merger. On Tuesday, it withdrew its application before the industry regulator National Company Law Tribunal and said that it will focus instead on internal growth. Pulling the Nclt application also makes it somewhat easier for Zee to pursue its arbitration and other legal actions against Sony.
The plan to merge the two mid-size film and TV businesses was on the table for over two years, but finally (acrimoniously) collapsed in January 2024. Sony is also seeking restitution from Zee, which it says failed to live up to the agreed merger terms. Since the wedding bells stopped ringing, Zee has also announced that it will slice its workforce by 15%.

Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar is planning a major push into animation content for adults.
The push follows the success of Graphic India’s 3D animation “The Legend of Hanuman,” the third season of which debuted earlier this month to a critical and audience reception that the streamer is happy with. The series is derived from ancient Indian mythological epic “The Ramayana.”
“There are so many stories around around ‘The Ramayana’ that are remaining to be told. We feel that this is a franchise, which has lots of storytelling left, and we want to really scale up and build this world in an exciting manner,” Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM (Hindi-language speaking markets) Entertainment Network at broadcaster Disney Star, told Variety.
Disney+ Hotstar is teaming with Graphic India again for another adult animation series, which will be unveiled within the next six months, but it is coy about specific details at the moment.

Long awaited by cinephiles and Orson Welles fans, it took longer than it should for The Trial to be restored. At last, Welles' favourite of his own films has been given the Criterion treatment. It's often neglected in discussions on Welles' work (likely because for years it was hard to see), and deserves this new attention and care, not only because of its importance in the filmmaker's history, but in how it is both of its time and yet still understandable to a contemporary audience. Based on the novel by Franz Kafka - a novel that was published posthumously, arguably not completed, and at first compiled by his publisher as opposed to the author himself - it's Kafka's arguably strangest work (which is saying something),...

Franz Kafka’s The Trial seems straightforward enough as you read it, and yet the words don’t quite seem to take you anywhere. There’s an effect in the novel of dense nothingness: Kafka’s brilliance was for a pared-down prose with complex resonances that deliberately strand the reader. In a 1998 English translation issued by Schocken Books Inc., the translator in his preface discusses the thorniness of recreating in English from German how the word “assault” is used in various tenses to link the protagonist’s slander, his arrest, and his relationship to a typist. One could spend years attempting to parse the bottomless intricacies of The Trial, and people have. Kafka achieved a prose that deconstructs the convoluted legalese that societies adapt in an effort to divorce situations from common sense and decency via labyrinths of language, and thus controlling the populace.

Martin Scorsese has no desire to rank films.
The auteur and writer-director of “Killers of the Flower Moon” said during a Time magazine video (below) that he is “against” Top 10 lists of movies, especially when citing his own favorite films.
“I’ve tried to make lists over the years of films I personally feel are my favorites, whatever that means,” Scorsese said. “And then you find out that the word ‘favorite’ has different levels: Films that have impressed you the most, as opposed to films you just like to keep watching, as opposed to those you keep watching and learning from, or experiencing anew. So, they’re varied. And I’m always sort of against ’10 best’ lists.”
He continued, “Well yes, there’s ‘Citizen Kane.’ That changed my life. He broke all of the rules. One of the things that [Orson] Welles said was one of the best things you can bring to filmmaking is ignorance.

Vishal Chaubey comes into the picture in the first episode of the show. To date, Hindi cinema has saturated the legal drama genre. Many films have courtroom scenes as a significant part of their narrative. Many are exaggerated, while there are only a few that realistically portray actual courtroom scenes. These are some of the films in this genre, Shaurya, Jai Bhim, Mulk, Pink, Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, Jolly Llb, No One Killed Jessica and Meri Jung. Web series in the legal drama genre have recently become all the rage; there are shows like Guilty Minds, Your Honor, and Criminal Justice, to name a few, that have caught the attention of the audience and helped them understand how our system works.

New Delhi, July 14 (Ians) The purpose of a trial is to ensure that the defendant gets a fair assessment of all evidence against him or her, and so, it is a structured process wherein the facts of a case are presented to a jury, which decides if the defendant is guilty or not. If the ruling in the case is found to be not maintainable, then it can be challenged in a higher court.
The only difference is that unlike in the US, India does not have a trial by jury system!
The process of trial as enumerated in our Constitution is that “trial is the right of a person”, or that the trial of a court should be a “fair trial”. And that could be a huge challenge if a story around the American courts is adapted to suit the Indian milieu and its legal system.
Understandably then, the eight-episode Disney+ Hotstar series,...

Since various Ott platforms have walked into our lives, the Indian audience has been exposed to some decent American shows that have familiarized them with how systems in that country work. It is fascinating to comprehend the fact that there are a lot of similarities in how things are done over there and here in our country. The Good Wife was one of the more popular CBS shows, and thanks to Netflix, many Indians supposedly enjoyed the drama. Banking on the popularity of the original, Disney + Hotstar brings us an Indian remake, The Trial, created and directed by Suparn Varma and written by Hussain Dalal, Abbas Dalal, and Siddharth Kumar. The show, just like the original one, focused on a wife who, after the very public downfall of her husband, must go back to working full-time to keep her life going.

‘The Trial’ is a story of a wife’s choices. The series also has a stellar ensemble with Sheeba Chaddha, Jisshu Sengupta, Alyy Khan, Kubbra Sait and Gaurav Pandey in pivotal roles.
Opening up about the camaraderie on the sets of ‘The Trial – Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhona’, Kajol said: “We had an absolute great time on set. Suparn was like our gang leader. He just made sure that we were all comfortable around each other as far the dialogues and other aspects were concerned.”
“I think everybody was pretty much a veteran on set, everybody worked on many films before this, have done a lot of work, been in the industry for years. So, it was really comfortable, easy and good fun.

Former enlisted U.S. Air Force member and Nsa translator Reality Winner, who was arrested by federal authorities in 2017 for leaking classified information, has a fortuitous first name for a dramatist looking to interrogate both the state of our world and the lines between fiction and document, between script and transcript. Hence the straightforward title of Tina Satter’s Reality, the resonances of which hardly need further explanation.
The dialogue in Satter and James Paul Dallas’s screenplay is drawn directly from recordings the F.B.I. made as they executed a search warrant on Reality’s home in Augusta, Georgia, and interviewed the young woman about her illegal leak of intelligence on Russian interference in the 2016 election to online news publication The Intercept. This would seem to include all the awkward pauses, the uncomfortable small talk, and the sudden coughs and throat clears that become such unsettling features of Satter’s portrait of Winner’s ordeal.

Kelly Meggs — a top Oath Keepers deputy from Florida who led the militia’s charge of the Capitol wearing a patch reading, “I’M Just Here For The Violence” — received a sentence of 12 years on the same sedition charge.
Rhodes was convicted last November of the plot to block, by force,...
