Nick Broomfield’s Tales of the Grim Sleeper follows the case of the serial killer in South Central Los Angeles that spans more than 20 years. The first murder took place in 1985, but an apparent 14-year break between murders earned him the nickname of “the Grim Sleeper.” Lonnie Franklin Jr. was arrested in 2010 and is currently awaiting trial for almost a dozen women, though the number could increase. Though the case is a major part of the film, Broomfield also explores poverty, racism and the police investigation that failed to warn the neighborhood that a serial killer was suspected until 2008.
The film made the Academy’s documentary feature shortlist and could land a nomination at the 87th Academy Awards. Here are seven other documentaries about murder in America that scored nominations (in chronological order):

★★★☆☆Released in time to mark the 50th anniversary of the John F. Kennedy assassination, there was always going to be a question mark over the integrity of Peter Landesman's Parkland (2013): was this made to cash in on public interest, or is it a carefully researched ode to a much-loved president? On the outside it appears very polished with an appealing lineup of cast members, which helps to tickle the fancy of the sceptical viewer pondering if there are any angles left through which to view the events. Landesman developed the script from Vincent Bugliosi's Four Days in November, following suit in opening on the morning of the tragic Dallas motorcade shooting.

Despite excellent cinematography and some first-class performances, this JFK assassination drama remains an also-ran
What else is there to say about the assassination of JFK? With every aspect of the case explored in both documentary (Killing Oswald also opens this week) and drama, it's hard to find an angle that hasn't been covered.
This solid but unremarkable adaptation of Vincent Bugliosi's painstaking book Four Days in November focuses on the lives of incidental characters (Zac Efron's exhausted young surgeon, Paul Giamatti's rattled Abraham Zapruder) who find themselves accidentally caught up in the whirlwind.
Barry Ackroyd's cinematography lends a typically authentic air to the proceedings and Jacki Weaver is extraordinary as Oswald's unhinged mother, Marguerite, but Parkland remains a bystander in the already overcrowded field of films about the events of November 1963.

Chicago – Tomorrow, November 22nd, 2013, is the 50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Beyond the numerous TV programs and tributes expected for the memory, which films have lent the best perspective over the years regarding that Day in Dallas? The following offers five films for consideration.
Films and the cinema also figured in the capture of Lee Harvey Oswald. The alleged assassin ducked into Texas Theater in Dallas as he was on the run from the murder scene, and was apprehended inside the theater. A war film double feature was playing there – “Cry of Battle” (1963) and “War is Hell” (1963). It was the second film that was interrupted when police descended on Oswald.
The following five films – available for digital download, Blu-ray and DVD – provides different observations and objectives regarding November 22nd, 1963, and submits the facts, conspiracy theories and background players that were present in Dallas on that day.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Nov. 22nd assassination of President John F. Also included is a popular drama about Kennedy’s service during World War II.

Parkland takes place on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, in the eye of the hurricane that was U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The focus of the film, though, is not the assassinated leader, but the people on the periphery of the shooting called upon to do their duty in the midst of horror and tragedy.
Based on the Vincent Bugliosi book Four Days in November, Parkland introduces us to characters affected and afflicted by the events of that day, but does little to make these people and their stories compelling.
Among the true-life people that the film chronicles are Secret Service Agent Forrest Sorrels (Billy Bob Thornton), who had never lost a president on his watch, and Abraham Zapruder (Paul Giamatti), a tailor who documented footage of the assassination on his 8mm camera. As expected, the assassination stuns both men, but writer/director Peter Landesman doesn’t know...

First-time writer-director Peter Landesman hopes to showcase the emotional and physical struggles that American citizens and officials struggled to deal with in his new drama, Parkland.
Parkland recounts the chaotic events that occurred in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, as it follows the assassination of JFK (Brett Stimely), as he was riding in a parade with his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy (Kat Steffens). The story weaves together the perspectives of a handful of ordinary individuals suddenly thrust into extraordinary circumstances immediately following the president’s death.
Among those who first-handily contended with the murder were such civilians as the young doctors and nurses at Parkland Hospital who tried to save Kennedy, including Dr. Malcom Perry (Colin Hanks) and Dr. Charles ‘Jim’ Carrico (Zac Efron); an unwitting cameraman, Abraham Zapruder (Paul Giamatti), who captured what became the most watched and examined film in history; and Robert Oswald (James Badge Dale), the brother of...

The 38th Annual Toronto International Film Festival kicked off Thursday night, and by Saturday morning, there were already some big winners and losers. The opening night film, “The Fifth Estate,” came in with high expectations considering it’s director is Oscar winner (for original screenplay for “Gods and Monsters”) Bill Condon and it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks. Biopics are hot, the fact that the material is recent is hotter, and no one is hotter than Cumberbatch (Errr…in terms of pop culture, I mean. Ahem.) Yet despite a standing ovation from the crowd at the premiere, the critics seemed underwhelmed. Still, “Fifth Estate” fared better than the star-studded “Parkland,” an ensemble piece with Zac Efron, Billy Bob Thornton, and Paul Giamatti adapted from Vincent Bugliosi's book “Four Days in November: The Assassination of President John F. Parkland does for JFK what Emilio Estevez's Bobby did for his brother, depicting the lead-up to and aftermath of his assassination from multiple viewpoints. They include Billy Bob Thornton as the head of Dallas’s Secret Service, Paul Giamatti is amateur lenser Abraham Zapruder, Marcia Gay Harden as the head nurse at Parkland, the hospital to which the dying president was taken, and Zac Efron as a rookie doctor. Parkland has debuted a new trailer.
Peter Landesman's drama centres around the immediate aftermath of the shooting of President John F Kennedy.
JFK is rushed to the nearby Parkland hospital, where an untested young doctor (Zac Efron) must operate on the critically wounded leader.
Other strands include the backlash against the FBI and the family of presumed shooter Lee Harvey Oswald.
A spectator (Paul Giamatti) is unwittingly drawn into the events after he captures that terrible moment in history on camera.
Marcia Gay Harden, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacki Weaver, James Badge Dale, Jackie Earle Haley, Colin Hanks, David Harbour, Ron Livingston, Jeremy Strong and Tom Welling also star in the movie.
Parkland is based Vincent Bugliosi's Four Days In November.
It will open on September 20 in the Us and November 8 in the UK.

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy is one of those days that will forever remain in the minds of the American people. Film director known for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Wattstax
Mel Stuart, who has died aged 83, became widely known for directing two radically dissimilar films, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Wattstax. The former, which Stuart called "the most rewarding experience of my career", was a garish and joyfully warped musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Received without enthusiasm on its release in 1971, the movie became over the next few decades a children's favourite, though its psychedelic overtones extended its appeal beyond that core audience. "Although I have been a film-maker for over 40 years," Stuart wrote in 2001, "Willy Wonka is the one work that has reached out to and been embraced by a wide audience."
Wattstax, released two years later, also acquired a cult following, one which might have increased had music rights issues not made the film hard to see until the late 1990s.

Mel Stuart, an award-winning documentarian and producer, died Thursday night at the age of 83. In addition to making documentaries like The Making of the President 1960 (which won and Emmy) and Four Days in November, he directed the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Odds are you saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory when you were far too young to understand that someone had directed it-- when you're a kid you accept the reality of a film for what it is, and figure that if anyone is in charge, it's got to be Willy Wonka. But Stuart pulled off the amazing feat of handing over a film to a character as wild and unpredictable as Gene Wilder's Wonka, but telling the story of the five kids who enter his factory anyway, especially Charlie. Willy Wonka maintains the dark whimsy of Roald Dahl's book, but also one-ups...

More below. Stuart also followed presidential campaigns with a documentarian's eye on the campaigns from 1964 and 1968, in addition to lensing Wattstax, following the music festival of the same name and the aftermath of riots in the community in 1965. Other documentary features included work for PBS as part of their "American Masters" ...

David L. Wolper, the groundbreaking producer who made television history with the miniseries "Roots" as well as the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics, died at his home in Beverly Hills on Tuesday of congestive heart disease and complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was 82.
Wolper won two Emmy Awards for 1977’s "Roots" and its 1979 "Roots: The Next Generations," the two miniseries based on Alex Haley’s novel about his African-American ancestors pioneered the docudrama genre. Broadcast in one-and-two hour segments over an eight-day period in early 1977, the first series won huge ratings, despite initial reservations that its focus on the history of African-Americans would not have wide appeal.
