Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise explore the galaxy and defend the United Federation of Planets.
Reportedly, when the show was first pitched to Desilu Studios, upon first seeing the title Star Trek, studio owner Lucille Ball thought the proposed series was a sitcom, or variety show about a group of travelling U.S.O. performers.
"He's dead, Jim."
Captain Kirk's Log Entry narrations often go against the plotting of the scenes, particularly scenes of suspense. FOR EXAMPLE: If a scene has been set up as a moment of suspense in which a character (or characters) or the USS Enterprise itself is in some type of danger in which they may or may not survive, Kirk's log entries negates the moments of suspense since he cannot have made a log entry if he did not survive the moment.
Robert Lansing is the only guest star on this series to be billed at the top of the program - just after the episode's title - rather than in the end credits. After the words, "Assignment: Earth", came, "Guest Star Robert Lansing as Mister Seven."
