Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise explore the galaxy and defend the United Federation of Planets.
Traditionally, science fiction stories had depicted space travel craft as either flying saucers or oblong capsules, often shaped like cigars or fountain pens. The design of the Enterprise combined both traditional concepts.
James T. Kirk:
Scotty, beam us up. - This line was never actually spoken in the television series.
The Star Trek Universe is inconsistent in its use of measurement standards. In Star Trek: Obsession, Ensign Garrovick describes a gaseous creature as being "several cubic meters" in size, but his distance as "about twenty feet away". These discrepancies continue through all the Star Trek series and movies.
Robert Lansing is the only guest star on this series to be billed at the top of the program - just after the episode's title - rather than in the end credits. After the words, "Assignment: Earth", came, "Guest Star Robert Lansing as Mister Seven."
