Blondie is shown cleaning his (historically incorrect) revolver by simply running a brush through the barrel and the cylinder chambers, from which comes out a small puff or dry dust. In reality, black powder (the only gun powder available at the time of the Civil War and for the following thirty years) after a relatively short use produced a thick, grimy, smelly, CORROSIVE fouling that tended to jam the gun's action (to the point that sometime it was necessary to turn the cylinder by hand!) and that had to be painstakingly cleaned (soap and hot water was the best way) to keep the gun working and to prevent irreversible corrosion.
