A father figure to several generations, he was best known for his TV work of course, but Andy Griffith had quite a few big screen roles. The tall actor from Mount Airy, North Carolina most notably played Lonesome Rhodes in Elia Kazan’s ahead-of-its-time satire A Face In The Crowd (1957) and as Private Will Stockdale in No Time For Sergeants (1958 – where he met his costar and lifelong friend Don Knotts). Other movie credits included Angel In My Pocket (1969), and as ‘Old Joe’ in Waitress (2007). Griffith was 86.
