I’m beginning to think that, cinematically at least, the Wendigo hit its peak back in 1995 with Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo, an absolutely batshit mix of folklore, Evil Dead-style mayhem, and stop-motion monsters. Despite some decent films on the subject like The Retreat there’s yet to be a definitive screen version of this creature from Native American folklore.
The latest take on the myth is titled, aptly enough, The Wendigo and it begins somewhere in the woods of North Carolina as YouTuber Logan calls out the creature’s name hoping to catch it on camera for his livestream. He gets more than he bargained for and gets dragged off while, in true found-footage fashion, his camera glitches.
Ironically, the footage goes...

Toronto — Jonathan Frid, a Canadian actor best known for playing Barnabas Collins in the 1960s original vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows", has died. He was 87.
Frid died Friday of natural causes in a hospital in his home town of Hamilton, Ontario, said Jim Pierson, a friend and spokesman for Dan Curtis Productions, the creator of "Dark Shadows."
Frid starred in the 1960s gothic-flavored soap opera about odd, supernatural goings-on at a family estate in Maine.
His death comes just weeks before a Tim Burton-directed version of Dark Shadows is due out next month starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. Frid has a cameo role in the new movie in which he meets Depp's character in a party scene with two other original actors from the show.
Pierson said Burton and Depp were fans of Frid, who played a vulnerable vampire in one of the first sympathetic portrayal of the immortal creatures.

Warner Bros is set to release "Dark Shadows," starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton, on May 11th. The new movie is based the 1960s TV series by the same name that starred Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, the role Depp is now playing. Unfortunately, now comes word that Frid has died of natural causes at Juravinski Hospital in Ontario. He was 87 years old. Outside of "Dark Shadows," Frid also starred in 1973 TV movie "The Devil's Daughter" and in the 1974 horror film "Seizure." He also filmed a cameo in Burton's movie, which was important for Depp, who previously admitted to being "obsessed" as a child with Frid's performance as the 200-year-old vampire. "I loved the show when I was a kid [and] I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins," Depp said back in 2009. "I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was 5 or 6."...

Frid died on none other than Friday the 13th, according his Dark Shadows co-star Kathryn Leigh Scott, who told TheWrap that the star passed away in a hospital following a fall at his home near Toronto. His family had not wanted to release the news earlier.
The classically trained Frid cut his teeth in live theater in Canada, England and the United States; following Dark Shadows, he appeared in the TV movie The Devil's Daughter and in Oliver Stone's directorial debut, Seizure, then returned to the stage, with work that included a Broadway revival of Arsenic and Old Lace and many one-man shows for charity.

Says Digital Spy, "The 87-year-old actor reportedly died of natural causes at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario.... He filmed a cameo appearance - his final acting credit - in Tim Burton's forthcoming film remake of Dark Shadows, which stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas." On a personal note, as a child in the 1960s, Jonathan's portrayal of Barnabas really struck a chord with me and inspired my imagination in such a way that it ultimately led me down the path to writing. Just as importantly, in the 1980s I interviewed Jonathan in his New York apartment, and for a time was visiting him each Sunday to go through his archives to gather information on a book I was researching, and to reflect with him about those days. It was certainly surreal to know that one Sunday Jonathan Frid...
