Richard Foronjy, who spent more than eight years in prison before he turned to acting and appeared in such films as Serpico, Midnight Run, Repo Man and Carlito’s Way, died Sunday, his family announced. He was 86.
Foronjy said he was arrested more than 20 times for “forgery, bank robbery, credit card rip-offs, assorted crimes and skullduggery … [guilty of] almost everything except drugs and homicide,” he said in a 1987 interview with Upi’s Vernon Scott.
The Brooklyn native was convicted only once, but that got him an 8½-year stretch in the New York prisons Sing Sing and Attica before he was released when he was 32.
In Hollywood, not surprisingly, Foronjy specialized in portraying cops and crooks.
He was a cop killer in his screen debut, Serpico (1973), and cops in The Morning After (1986) and Prince of the City (1981), all for Sidney Lumet. “I was especially good at playing cops, no doubt because I got to...

Ever since the dawn of cinema, stunts have been at the heart of the medium. The very first motion picture, Eadweard Muybridge’s 1878 reel The Horse In Motion, captured a jockey riding a horse at speed — cinema’s first stunt! And ever since then, fearless stunt people have been engaging themselves in the ultimate game of one-upmanship, putting their bodies on the line and minds at work to help make movies soar higher, go faster, hit harder, and be bigger than ever before. Even if the Oscars still aren’t ready to recognise that just yet with a Stunt category, we don’t need an awards ceremony to pay tribute to the crazy folk who do this stuff for real.
To celebrate the stunt community – and mark the release of stunt-tastic action extravaganza The Fall Guy – take a look back over the craziest movie stunts that were actually done for real.

For many around the world, there’s one name at the top of the action totem pole: Jackie Chan, and today marks his 70th birthday.
If you only know him as a goofy martial arts comedian from the Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon series, then consider this a wake up call. Because when Jackie did things His way on his home turf, he churned out some of the best action movies you’ll ever see.
Many would point to Drunken Master II as Jackie’s magnum opus. Fair enough, that is an all-timer, but for an example of his best modern day martial arts action, mixed in with some crime drama and his signature comedy, one of his absolute best outings is 1985’s Police Story.

Oscar-winning actor Will Smith has given some incredible performances throughout his career. He has showcased his acting prowess through a range of roles spanning drama, comedy, and action. When Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid spinoff plans to expand the Miyagiverse significantly. The teen-focused drama Crane kicked martial arts action fans in the face in 2018, building on the Karate Kid legacy started by Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). With every season, Cobra Kai has grown through fan-service casting, interpersonal drama, and hard-hitting action. No one could have predicted the Miyagiverse would expand the way it has because of Cobra Kai, and now the show’s co-creator, Jon Hurwitz, says fans can expect Season 6 to explore the franchise in exciting ways like never before!
In a thread on Twitter/X, Hurwitz assured fans the final season of the series delivers big surprises, in-depth character flashbacks, and plot elements that expand the Miyagiverse.
“Season 6 expands the ‘Karate Kid/Cobra Kai’ universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.

Steve Lawrence, a king among easy-listening crooners who rocketed to fame in the ’50s and ’60s as half of the duo Steve and Eydie, died Thursday at age 88. Lawrence died at home in Los Angeles, and the cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to a spokesperson for the family, Susan DuBow.

Lawrence was preceded in death in 2013 by his wife, Eydie Gormé, with whom he enjoyed nearly unparalleled success as a performing couple during their heyday as touring artists and TV stars in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The couple had continued to tour together through 2009.

It takes a lot for a cinematic creative to do multiple jobs on one production. Many directors work closely with their actors over many years, building a rapport, maybe even a second language that allows them to develop and improve with each new work. It's tough to get closer than an actor and director being the same person, however, and a rare case across Asian cinema. Nevertheless, there are directors out there who have proven to be a cut above the rest by turning the camera on themselves and expanding their range in the process. Here are ten of the most striking self-directed performances Asian cinema has to offer.
1. Bruce Lee
Action stars don't get much more iconic than Bruce Lee, the Hong Kong superstar taken far too soon at the age of 32 and the height of his powers. His sole directorial effort is “The Way of the Dragon”, a...

Call it the Karate Kid Cinematic Universe.
Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, both of whom starred in Karate Kid movies decades apart, are set to reprise their popular characters in Sony Pictures’ latest installment of the iconic coming-of-age martial arts franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle, best known for his well-regarded and award-winning teen television dramas I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing the untitled feature that the studio is positioning as the fusing and continuing the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a Chinese actor to play the erstwhile title character launched today, with the Chan and Macchio kicking things off with an introductory video, seen below.
Rob Lieber, whose credits include Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, wrote the script. The plot line is hiding in the back of the dojo.

In the mid-eighties, Jackie Chan was the biggest star in Asia. After failing to break out like Bruce Lee in the North American market, he focused on Asia, with his film Police Story making him one of the biggest box office draws of his day. At the same time, Chan was frequently working with two other action stars, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, with whom he had been raised at the brutal Peking Opera School. Their movies, Project A and Wheels on Meals, where big hits, but 1988’s Dragons Forever was the breaking point for their relationship, with them never again headlining a film together. What happened?
Part of it may have been jealousy and a heavy dose of ego. At the time, Chan was the biggest star to emerge from Hong Kong since Bruce Lee. While the late seventies and early eighties were good for him, leaving to a string of popular hits,...

Fort Lauderdale, Fla – He was the heart throb-iest of the teen heart throbs when he came onto the scene in the early 1970s. David Cassidy was the driving force of the manufactured-for-tv pop act The Partridge Family, which provided a soundtrack for their era. Cassidy died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 67, on November 21st, 2017.
David Cassidy fought the demons of his sudden fame for virtually the rest of his life after the Partridge Family era, admitting an alcohol problem after being arrested for a DUI in 2013. Earlier this year, he announced that he was living with non-Alzheimer’s dementia, which ran in his family. But during the burst of infamy he had in the early 1970s, there was no greater beloved pin-up teen than Cassidy, who ushered in a parade of dreamy 1970s boys like Donny Osmond, Vincent Van Patten, Leif Garrett and his half brother, Shaun Cassidy.

Today, Michael Mann is predominately associated with the big screen — indeed, few filmmakers make movies quite as big and cinematic as things like “The Last Of The Mohicans,” “Heat,” “Public Enemies” and yes, our beloved “Blackhat” (you’ll learn to like it one day, fools). But the director made his name in TV, initially writing on “Starsky & Hutch” before creating the acclaimed “Police Story,” and helping to shepherd the iconic “Miami Vice” and the less well known, but highly influential “Crime Story.

Michael Mann‘s films are sexy, cool, gritty, slick, angry and sometimes neon. He’s a filmmaker who is often eager to teach us the true meaning of heartache, and plenty of 80s and 90s kids owe professional directing careers to his stylistic pathfinding. Not to mention everyone who loved Drive. He’s also a frustrating director because his output is relatively infrequent (11 movies in 34 years), yet he’s greatly consistent in the kinds of stories that he reaches for. Men, usually desperate, always driven, reaching for something far beyond themselves. Exploring that ground has yielded some truly excellent cinematic experiences and killer moments over the past three decades. So here’s a bit of free film school (for filmmakers and fans alike) from a man who likes playing with shadows. It Takes a Lot to Get to Thief The Criterion’s synopsis of Mann’s debut feature (spine #691), begins, “The...

Actor who starred as the troubled pupil in Tea and Sympathy on stage and screen
The actor John Kerr, who has died aged 81, won a Tony award in his first starring role on the Broadway stage, as Tom in Tea and Sympathy in 1953, and subsequently appeared in the 1956 film version directed by Vincente Minnelli. Robert Anderson's play, in which a schoolboy "confesses" to his housemaster's wife that he might be homosexual – only to be seduced out of the notion by the sympathetic listener – was considered so controversial that it was restricted to a "members only" theatrical run in London, and Minnelli's film received an X certificate, despite modification, notably in the suggestion that the housemaster was gay.

In this occasional series of 'remarkable things' articles, we've mostly focused exclusively on movies that were critical or financial flops. Previous entries have included Jaws: The Revenge, Battlefield Earth and RoboCop 3, which all suffered in both critics' reviews and at the box office.
This time, our choice isn't a notorious flop at all - it's Tango & Cash, a film which actually made a few million dollars more than it cost to make. At this stage in Sylvester Stallone's career, which featured the critical and financial nightmares Rocky V, Oscar and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, Tango & Cash was a comparative blockbuster.
In terms of critical reception, though, Tango & Cash fared less well. It was nominated for three Razzies (though won precisely none) and reviews...

Angie Dickinson has the credentials to read television's female law enforcers their rights, having been one of the earliest.
The veteran actress went from star of such movies as the original "Ocean's 11" and "The Killers" to home-screen staple in "Police Woman," NBC's "Police Story" spinoff that ran four seasons (1974-78). The show came at a time when women typically weren't drama-series leads ... and when told that other actresses cite her as someone who opened gates for them, Dickinson replies to Zap2it, "It's nice to be a standard bearer."
Ironically, she might not have been the performer who would become Sgt. Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson. "I happen to know that they wanted Karen Black for the 'Police Story' episode," Dickinson reports, "and as we were shooting that, they said, 'This could make a series.' They didn't have a separate series in mind at all when we started.

American actress Zina Bethune has died at the age of 66 following a hit-and-run horror in Los Angeles.
The screen and stage star, who appeared in Martin Scorsese's first feature film Who's That Knocking At My Door, died in the early hours of Monday morning after she was struck by two vehicles while trying to help an injured animal.
Bethune had pulled her car over in Forest Lawn Drive and was crossing the road to help the stricken creature when the first vehicle struck her, catapulting her body onto the opposite carriageway.
The actress was then struck by a second car, which dragged her body 600 feet (182 metres). Cops believe the driver of the second vehicle failed to stop after the accident.
Bethune was a talented dancer who performed for the New York City Ballet before moving into acting. She enjoyed roles in various U.S TV dramas including The Guiding Light, The Nurses, Police Story, Planet of the Apes, Route 66, and CHiPs.

Veteran actor James Farentino died as a result of a broken hip, a Los Angeles coroner has ruled.
Farentino, who enjoyed recurring roles in some of America's biggest TV shows, was suspected to have died of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on 24 January, but the star's cause of death has now been listed as "sequelae of right hip fracture" - an injury he sustained after falling out of bed at his California home in December, according to TMZ.com.
The exact nature of the hip complication has not been listed.
The fractured hip wasn't 73-year-old Farentino's only health problem - he also suffered from heart disease, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a condition which makes it difficult to breathe.
Farentino rose to fame in the 1960s and became known for starring opposite Patty Duke in 1969's Me, Natalie. He also became a TV favourite on shows like Police Story and Dynasty.

Like the double-wide premiere for HBO's Boardwalk Empire, the pilot for the network's new horse-racing series Luck—first broadcast December 11th, and then re-run this past Sunday—represents a meeting of two distinctive authorial voices. In the case of the Boardwalk Empire pilot—a high-water mark of style and efficiency that the frequently-frustrating series has never managed to live up to, aside from a couple of episodes neatly directed by Carpenterite horror specialist Brad Anderson—it was episode director / series executive producer Martin Scorsese and episode writer / series creator Terrence Winter; in the case of Luck, it's episode director / series executive producer Michael Mann and episode writer / series creator David Milch.
The interplay of low-lifes and big spenders in Luck's pilot is distinctly Milch's. It's clear from the episode's structure alone—a lot of jargony horse-racing intrigue spinning around a story about four track regulars who finally win it...

Greek director Theo Angelopoulos died Tuesday after being hit by a motorcycle, police told the Assoicated Press. He was 76. He had been shooting his latest film in Athens just blocks away from where the accident happened. Angelopoulos' deliberate and episodic style made him an arthouse favorite, earning him the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for 1995's "Ulysses' Gaze." To his fans, he was a consummate filmmaker with a masterful command of the long-shot, but to his detractors he favored an overly ponderous style. His was an extremely familiar face to TV watchers in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. James Farentino had a handful of interesting big screen credits, most notably the lead in Dan O’Bannon’s cult shocker Dead And Buried (1981) and the odd WWII sci-fier The Final Countdown (1980). Farentino was married to Michelle Lee and Elizabeth Ashley but in 1992 was criminally charged with stalking Frank Sinatra’s daughter (never a good idea). A dependable actor, James Farentino died of heart failure yesterday in Los Angeles.
From The Los Angeles Times:
Actor James Farentino, whose private life was sometimes as dramatic as the roles he played in theater and on television, died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 73 and had suffered from a lengthy illness, said family spokesman Bob Palmer.
Best known for his TV work, Farentino was one of the last contract performers with Universal Studios in the 1960s.

For a time in the late ’50s and early ’60s, TV outpaced movies when it came to frank, hard-hitting approaches to serious topics. Then the production code relaxed, the New Hollywood emerged, and suddenly television looked awfully stodgy whenever a Marcus Welby or an Ironsides tackled a hot-button issue. Starting in 1973, the anthology drama Police Story became part of TV’s attempt to reclaim its edge. Created by cop-turned-writer Joseph Wambaugh—then a hot property thanks to his gritty 1971 debut novel The New Centurions—Police Story told a different story every week, with only a few recurring actors ...
