Rocky Balboa, a small-time boxer, gets a supremely rare chance to fight heavy-weight champion Apollo Creed in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.
Al Silvani, who plays Rocky's cut man, had played the cut man to another boxer named Rocky 20 years earlier, in Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956). Rocky Graziano was played by Paul Newman and was considered his breakthrough role, just like Rocky (1976) was for Sylvester Stallone.

Rocky fights Apollo at the Spectrum Stadium in Philadelphia. As Adrian comes out to watch the fight, a Los Angeles police officer is standing behind her in the corridor.
The film opens with the title of the film scrolling from right to left underscored by music. However, instead of just doing the opening credits for the cast, Rocky is shown boxing. The rest of the credits appear later as Rocky is shown walking down a street, and this time there is nothing underscoring the credits.
