The series featured Jamie Lee Curtis as Lt. Barbara Duran. The original movie, Operation Petticoat (1959), starred her father, Tony Curtis, as Duran's love interest, Lt. (JG) Nick Holden. Duran in the movie is portrayed by Dina Merrill. Holden in this series is portrayed by Richard Gilliland.
During a hiatus after being fired from this series, Jamie Lee Curtis was cast as Laurie in John Carpenter's Halloween (1978).
The original plan was for this project to run as a one-hour series. They shot a 2-hour pilot movie, and several one-hour scripts were written. Then ABC had second thoughts and decided it would work better in a half-hour format. The first script (after the pilot) was shot as written and shown in two parts, allowing time for the other scripts to be rewritten.
Melinda Naud, Richard Brestoff and Jim Varney were the only actors from season one that were rehired for season two.
