During the Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade Colonel who has set himself up as a god among a local tribe.
War movie staple R. Lee Ermey has an uncredited cameo as a pilot who flies one of the Huey helicopters during the "Flight of the Valkyries" scene, before he would gain fame as the Drill Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket (1987), co-written by Michael Herr who scripted the narration here as voiced by Martin Sheen.
