- The film has a grim tone throughout, especially since it deals with a dangerous bioweapon that acts like a flu virus. As scientists race to find a cure, billions die, cities are deserted and an impending nuclear disaster complicates things further.
- There are two endings to the film depending on which version is watched. The abridged US version's ending is downright depressing, while the original uncut version is far more optimistic.
- While contacting the Japanese station team through his father's radio, an orphaned little boy loses all hope and commits suicide offscreen with a gun. Very upsetting.
- A Soviet nuclear submarine requests medical aid from the scientists at Antarctica. Their request is denied because they've been infected by the virus. A British submarine is forced to destroy them with a torpedo. Only the explosion is seen.
- A man times an explosive device and begins backing away from it. However, debris from a cave-in blocks off his escape route and he is caught in the explosion. He's crushed beneath more debris and impaled by pipes. His body is covered in blood and he yells in pain. Quite disturbing.
- A Japanese woman and child attempt to escape the local epidemic, using a speedboat headed for the ocean. They commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills along the way.
