Gemma decides to break up with her boyfriend Danny after finding out about his affair with one of her friends. She decides to change her life around, which includes quitting her job. Danny doesn't want to separate and proposes to her.
Gemma's mother is trying to get Gemma and Danny back together. Gemma applies for a job as a social worker. She takes a voluntary job at a citizen's advice bureau. Meanwhile, Josie is having a lot of trouble deciding what to wear on a date.
Gemma wants to stay living alone and talks to an friend, Julia, who cannot understand Gemma's position. Danny comes round to Gemma's place and wants to stay. Josie has a new boyfriend and she also has a surprise for him - she's pregnant.
Gemma starts her social work. Gemma's mother reveals that she has being having an affair and Gemma is stunned to learn that he is only 35. Josie tells her boyfriend that she is pregnant but he says that he isn't the marrying kind.
Gemma has a weekend with nothing to do. She locks herself out of her flat and calls on Danny to bring his key. They end up together at Danny's country cottage. Josie starts to worry about how her baby will affect her body.
Danny moves back into Gemma's life. He proposes marriage but Gemma rejects his offer. After a week, she tells him to go, permanently. Josie and Bernadette become very philosophical about relationships between men and women.
