This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 3, episode 13, "Into the Breach."
From the very beginning, "Star Wars" has been a smorgasbord of film influences and references. George Lucas cited John Ford and Akira Kurosawa films as chief inspirations for "A New Hope." In fact, here at /Film (and StarWars.com before that), I've written hundreds of articles about the cinematic influences behind "Star Wars."
The latest episode of "The Bad Batch" is no exception. As the Bad Batch further pursues a path to the secret Imperial science facility on Mount Tantiss where Omega is being held, they lead a daring mission to an orbital platform at Coruscant to get the coordinates and affect their rescue. Meanwhile, Omega is held inside a child prison with other gifted kids who are being experimented on. Be that as it may, she knows her brothers are coming for her, and...

The upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte promises plenty of martial-arts-inspired action and a climactic lightsaber battle. The makers of the show recently mentioned that the team aimed to compete with Darth Maul’s legendary battle with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and called it the best lightsaber battle in Star Wars history.
But is it? The franchise has seen numerous lightsaber battles across media, with fan getting their first taste of the trope in Star Wars: A New Hope. While the original trilogy is still considered to be the best of the films released to date, the lightsaber battles seem to have improved since then. The prequel trilogy’s climactic showdown between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker definitely has a higher ground in the category.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.
Even better, 2024 isn’t even halfway done. Per tradition, Den of Geek has put together a list of the big sci-fi movies heading your way for the rest of the year. This list doesn’t include upcoming sci-fi movies without firm release dates, but it will when they are announced. It will also be updated to add any movies we may have missed,...

The Greedo scene from George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars" remains steeped in controversy. /Film has written before about the many, many cuts of the Greedo scene throughout "Star Wars" history, and how baffling each subsequent change has been. In the original 1977 cut of "Star Wars," the affable Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is approached by a mugwump-like alien named Greedo (Paul Blake) in a seedy bar. Greedo is there to collect on a debt, holds a weapon on Han, and will likely kill him right at the table where he is sitting. Han, seeing the danger, plays it cool. He reaches under the table, surreptitiously unholsters his blaster, and kills the unsuspecting Greedo before the alien can get a shot off. The bar is so sleazy, no one seems to really care about the murder.
In 1997, Lucas released a polished re-edit of "Star Wars" touted as the "Special Edition." The 1997 cut added a new wrinkle.

The "Star Wars" universe is stuffed with memorable baddies, and since the theatrical films have mostly been shot in London, these villains are typically from the United Kingdom. Everyone's got a favorite: Ian McDiarmid's sinister Emperor Palpatine, Peter Cushing's ruthless Grand Moff Tarkin (who was digitally resurrected for "Rogue One"), Kenneth Colley's stressed out Admiral Piett ... there's really no wrong answer here. But if I absolutely have to place one member of the Galactic Empire over all the others, I might just go with Julian Glover's delectably evil General Maximillian Veers.
Why? Even though he doesn't get much screen time in "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back", Glover is just such a strikingly nasty piece of work during the assault on the Rebels' Hoth base of operations that I find myself wishing Lucas had found more for him to do.

Star Wars Outlaws is the latest game set in a galaxy far, far away and the setting is at the peak of the franchise’s best era. Ubisoft wanted to show a different point of view by creating a story that doesn’t necessarily revolve around the Galactic Civil War but centers on a simple scoundrel getting by.
The narrative director of the game took the time to share details regarding the main protagonist, Kay Vess, and how the team developed the story while honoring the previous stories.

After Disney acquired Lucasfilm, one of their biggest creative decisions regarding the "Star Wars" franchise was to completely disregard the entirety of the Expanded Universe, opting to turn all the novels, comics, video games, and other assorted media surrounding the "Star Wars" movies into what is now known as Legends and removing them from the overall canon of the galaxy far, far away.
However, since then, several "Star Wars" projects have brought some of the Expanded Universe content back under the canon umbrella, such as the villainous, master strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. The character originated in the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy of novels by author Timothy Zahn, which is largely considered to be among the best "Star Wars" books ever written.

Billy Dee Williams is defending actors who want to wear blackface in their performances.
The Star Wars actor appeared on Bill Maher’s podcast and recalled Laurence Olivier’s performance in 1965’s Othello, where the actor wore blackface.
“When he did ‘Othello,’ I fell out laughing,” Williams said of Olivier on the Club Random podcast. “He stuck his ass out and walked around with his ass, you know, because Black people are supposed to have big asses.”
He continued, “I thought it was hysterical. I loved it. I love that kind of stuff.”
Maher mentioned that actors could not wear Blackface today, to which Williams said, “Why not? You should do it. If you’re an actor, you should do anything you want to do.”

Billy Dee Williams said this week he believes actors should be allowed to do blackface, specifically praising Laurence Olivier’s performance in Othello.
“When he did Othello, I fell out laughing,” Williams said of Olivier on Sunday’s episode of Club Random With Bill Maher. In the 1965 film, Olivier wore blackface to play the film’s titular character. “He stuck his ass out and walked around because Black people are supposed to have big asses.”
Maher replied to Williams’ comment by saying, “Today, they would never let you do that.”
Williams then asked Maher, “Why?” to which Maher asked, in shock: “Blackface?”
“Why not? You should do it,” Williams said. “If you’re an actor, you should do anything you want to do.”
In response to his perspective, Maher pointed out that Williams, 87, “actually lived in a period where you couldn’t play the parts you should’ve played.”

Star Wars Outlaws can be coming sooner rather than later if the industry trend is any signifier. The official story trailer of the game is set to be released on April 9th. And this has sparked intense deliberation among fans regarding the release of the game is imminent.
Historically, the story trailer release usually signals that the game is about to be released. So, by the looks of it, the actual release date of Star Wars Outlaws is almost upon us, even before the Ubisoft forward in June.

Return to Oz, Disney’s 1985 dark take on Dorothy Gale (played by a then-9-year-old Fairuza Balk), shares its creative DNA with Star Wars. Not only that, George Lucas saved writer-director Walter Murch’s job after Disney fired Murch from the Oz shoot.
Lucas and Murch were old friends and collaborators, having met in the film department of the University of Southern California in the mid-1960s.
“My first memory of him was a shadowy figure behind me in the photograph developing room,” says Murch about Lucas on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast It Happened in Hollywood. “I was trying unsuccessfully to develop one of the photographs that I had taken for an exercise, and there was this voice behind me that said, ‘You’re doing it wrong.’ And I turned around and I said, ‘Who is this guy?’ Of course, it turns out he was right. I was doing it wrong.

Star Wars Outlaws is the latest game made by Ubisoft that will catch the eyes and ears of fans of the franchise and allow them to fulfill their fantasy of being immersed in a galaxy far, far away. The game will feature an open world and will showcase the power of current-gen systems giving the players a more in-depth and detailed look at the various worlds of Star Wars.
Ubisoft has a traditional formula of how they usually develop their games but the recent gameplay shows a great deviation. It can be viewed as a positive change of pace within the studio for willingly experimenting with different ways of how to build an open world. Star Wars Outlaws is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi which could explain the game’s fast-paced nature and combat.

"Oh, they've encased him in carbonite. He should be quite well protected, if he survived the freezing process, that is," quips C-3Po after Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is frozen alive in a slab of carbonite in "The Empire Strikes Back." It is a memorable scene, as it is preceded by Leia's (Carrie Fisher) declaration of love for Han, to which he replies with the characteristically suave, brilliantly ad-libbed "I know." The frozen Han is eventually handed over to Jabba the Hutt, whose lair is later infiltrated by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and gang to rescue their friend from his frozen state in "Return of the Jedi."
This is not the only instance of a person being carbon-frozen in the "Star Wars" universe. Although the process was widely used to encase and preserve transport materials (such as gaseous substances), it was often utilized to transfer sentient beings. Even Anakin Skywalker...

Say what you will of "Star Wars," but you can't deny the franchise is great with thematically-consistent visual choices. When a Force user is meant to be bad, they've got a red lightsaber and they're dressed up in scary dark clothing. When the character's meant to be good, they've got a blue/green lightsaber and they're wearing friendly light clothing (with exceptions like Luke Skywalker at the start of "Return of the Jedi"). It's perhaps a little too simple, but it was a great idea on creator George Lucas's part to come up with a type of futuristic sword that straight-up tells you what sort of person its owner is. Talk about taking visual shorthand to the next level.
Outside of clothing and choice of weapon, "Star Wars" is also quick to use appearances to indicate morality. The morally righteous Leia is conventionally attractive, whereas the evil Palpatine has yellow eyes and wrinkly skin.

Outside of his time fighting with a lightsaber, Mark Hamill has dominated the world of voice acting, having been a part of more animated projects than almost anyone in the film industry. He has played characters from all corners of the genre, being a part of the Marvel animated universe, The Sandman, The Boy and The Heron, and even Gravity Falls.
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
However, perhaps the one role that has been even more iconic than Luke Skywalker was his time as The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. He integrated the true essence of the character when he was portraying him, which is perfectly reflected in his performance. Fans adored how he played the Clown Prince of Gotham, and he has gone down in history as one of the best animated versions.

A theory about Baby Yoda suggests a potentially heartbreaking destiny for him ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Grogu’s surprising introduction in The Mandalorian, commonly known as Baby Yoda, took fans by storm. His mysterious origins and significance have continued to intrigue Star Wars enthusiasts throughout the show’s two seasons. As viewers explore Grogu’s backstory further, they speculate about his role in both the series’ storyline and the broader Star Wars universe. A fan theory from Reddit suggests that Grogu, also known as “The Child,” is part of a longstanding cycle where a child grows up to save the Chosen One from falling into darkness.
Speculation arises from the saviour cycle theory, suggesting that Ahsoka Tano could have trained Grogu to eventually mentor a new Chosen One in a later phase of the Star Wars timeline, especially considering her appearance in The Mandalorian’s second season. This theory implies that...

Star Wars fans haven’t seen Lando Calrissian – that is, the Billy Dee Williams version – on the big screen in five years. But will we ever again? With so many Star Wars projects on the horizon, it’s possible that Lando could turn up in some corner of the galaxy…But would Williams ever don the cape again? Sure – provided you show him the dough.
As Billy Dee Williams told Radio Times on any potential return to the character, “Pay me a lot of money and I’ll sell my soul.” As portrayed by Williams, Lando Calrissian first appeared in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, a former friend of Han Solo’s and one-time owner of the Millennium Falcon, the lore of which would be explored later in the Star Wars saga. Williams would return as Lando for 1983’s Return of the Jedi but wouldn’t reprise the character again – in the flesh,...

A new event is coming to Disneyland in April! Season of the Force will kick off with the latest additions to Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, which we covered recently, along with several other Star Wars goodies.
Season of the Force kicks off on April 5 and will run until June 2. This celebration of the science fiction franchise encompasses many new additions to Disneyland and Galaxy’s Edge:
On certain nights, the sky over Galaxy’s Edge will be lit up with the Fire of the Rising Moons fireworks show. It’s a celebration similar to what we saw at the end of Return of the Jedi. Does this mean we’ll be seeing dancing ewoks and droids?
John Williams’ legendary music will accompany the pyrotechnic entertainment, and Disney says your MagicBand+ will be involved in the event. Hopefully, there will also be some new Rf triggers for the droids. So...

It's fun going back to watch Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi epic "The Empire Strikes Back," knowing what twists would come in subsequent sequels. In "Empire," Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) became angry at Han Solo (Harrison Ford), a man Leia knew was attracted to her. To make Han jealous, Leia brazenly grabs a nearby Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and kisses him full on the mouth. Luke knows that Leia was only playing a game, but was happy to be kissed. Han stormed out of the room, outraged. Luke smiled in smug satisfaction.
In Richard Marquand's 1983 follow-up film "Return of the Jedi," it would be revealed that Luke and Leia were siblings. This was clearly a last-minute plot twist, meant to parallel the "surprise" from "Empire" that the villainous Darth Vader was actually Luke Skywalker's father. The "Jedi" twist wasn't thought out, however, as it retroactively incorporated into "Star Wars" an...

He’s a delightful young man. Extremely talented."But I don’t see him … I mean, when it comes to Lando Calrissian there’s only one Lando Calrissian. Billy Dee Williams originated the Lando Calrissian character in the Star Wars universe and would not mind reprising the role in future projects if they make a good monetary offer.
In a recent interview, the actor who first played Lando in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back is opening up about what it would take for him to return to a galaxy far, far away.
“Pay me a lot of money, and I’ll sell my soul,” Williams told Radio Times magazine about portraying Lando again.
Williams reprised the Lando role in 1983’s Return of the Jedi and most recently in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. A younger version of the character appeared in the prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, with Donald Glover taking on the role.
“He’s part of a whole new generation. He’ll create whatever he needs to create, to bring appeal to the character.

This week brought two brand new episodes of "The Bad Batch," a larger story in the context of the season's overarching narrative. Expectations are very high for Daisy Ridley‘s return to the galaxy far, far away. The actor is set to don the Jedi robes once again in a standalone film, which currently has the working title of Star Wars: New Jedi Order, but she’s no longer playing Rey as the fresh-faced student still figuring out her place in the galaxy or among the many generations of Jedi heroes who have come before her. In this brave new world of "Star Wars" fandom, it's almost unfathomable that there exist elements within the various films, novels, comics, and TV shows that don't have some sort of backstory or origin point. While obviously this stems from the huge fanbase for "Star Wars" loving the fictional universe so much that they wish to study and know absolutely everything that's in it, this trend also originated out of an inherent idea popularized by creator George Lucas with the very first movie in the franchise back in 1977 -- the implication that we're seeing a small part of a larger world, and every planet, ship, and creature we see (whether in the foreground or background) has its own history and story.
It's a powerful implication, and one that's essential to constructing a wholly fictional universe. Yet, of course, it's mostly hogwash -- or at least it used to be. While...

Star Wars‘ is truly trailblazing in visual sense, but John Williams’ music for Episode IV: A New Hope marked the beginning of something fresh. The legendary composer has created music for the adventures of dinosaur-filled islands (Jurassic Park), the intense realities of war (Saving Private Ryan), and the magical realms of wizards (Harry Potter) but nothing compares to his music for epic space battles (Star Wars).
Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, and Derek Lyons in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
Williams was requested to compose music for a film that would forever alter the landscape of filmmaking. The skilled composer matched director George Lucas’ vision with an opening theme that perfectly set the tone, grabbing viewers’ attention right from the start. But he would have almost made the same mistake as many Star Wars fans in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Anthony Daniels is parting with his head, and he’s feeling a little hesitant.
The actor, who has played the intergalactic robot C-3Po in numerous Star Wars movies and TV shows spanning over 40 years, is unloading his entire collection of Star Wars goodies in an auction thrown by memorabilia specialists Propstore that will be held next week in Los Angeles.
One of the centerpieces of the Anthony Daniels Collection is a screen-matched light-up head that Daniels wore in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The object, consisting of a faceplate, backplate and neck-ring, could fetch anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million. Memorabilia auction house Propstore is gearing up for their first entertainment memorabilia live auction of 2024 with over 1,700 rare and iconic lots set to be sold during Propstore’s three-day event from 12th-14th March.
