The everyday lives of working-class inhabitants of Albert Square, a traditional Victorian square of terrace houses surrounding a park in the East End of London's Walford borough. The square includes the Queen Vic pub and a street market.
Derek Martin, who played Charlie Slater, had got down to the last five for Den Watts when the series started but Julia Smith told him he wasn't "a ladies' man". He was also in the running to play Frank Butcher but was committed to another series, King & Castle (1986), instead.
