The everyday lives of working-class inhabitants of Albert Square, a traditional Victorian square of terrace houses surrounding a park in the East End of London's Walford borough. The square includes the Queen Vic pub and a street market.
Originally it had been planned for Chrissie Watts' trial for the murder of her husband Den to be screened. However the idea was scrapped because the actresses Tracy Ann Oberman (Chrissie Watts), Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and Michelle Ryan (Zoe Slater) had all moved on to other projects.

From 1993-1999, the series titles was an updated version which included a green river with a coloured city of East London. Drum beat were also added to the beginning of the theme.
