While on a promotional tour for The Dog Who Stopped the War (1984), producer Rock Demers crossed paths with a 17-year-old Céline Dion at a radio station in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. He was so impressed by her singing, he asked if she would do some songs for the soundtrack of The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) which he was about to shoot. Those song (Listen to the Magic Man and Michael's Song) ended up being the first English-language songs she ever performed.
Producer Rock Demers has said when he and director Michael Rubbo began the film, their goal was to create a "gentle, frightening film." He felt the theme was "If something frightens you, find out why. In most cases you'll discover it wasn't so frightening after all."
