When debating a request from Earth to check out a grid reference on LV-426, Simpson says, "They don't say why, and I don't ask. I don't ask because it takes two weeks to get an answer out here, and the answer is always 'Don't ask.' ". Taken literally, this would put LV-426 at approximately 113 billion miles or 1215 Astronomical Units (AU) from Earth, assuming that "two weeks to get an answer" means it takes one week to send a radio message from LV-426 to Earth one-way at the speed of light, and then another week for the answer to the question to arrive. No planets or planetary systems are known to exist at that particular distance from Earth.
