Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, we chat about one of the most famously beautiful (and talented!) actors of all time: Michelle Pfeiffer! We’re honored to have Veronica Fitzpatrick––of Brown University and The Bright Wall/Dark Room Podcast––on to talk Pfeiffer B-Sides Sweet Liberty, Tequila Sunrise, Wolf, and The Deep End of the Ocean.
We discuss what makes Michelle so iconic, how hard she had to work to push past being dismissed as just a pretty face, the incredible roles she’s turned down in her career, the extreme range she’s boasted during her time in the spotlight, and her willingness to take challenging roles.

There’s a sobering moment in the divorce odyssey of Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” when future bachelor Charlie (Adam Driver) sits down in a scrappy office, finding a welcome alternative to the aggressive and costly lawyer (Ray Liotta). Charlie’s new legal advisor, Bert Spitz, has a world-weary smile and strikes an inviting tone. In other words, he’s Alan Alda. “Most people in my business, you’re just transactions to them,” Bert says. “I like to think of you as people.”
Alda, 83, has played nasty characters before — consider his Oscar-nominated turn as scheming Senator Ralph Owen Brewster in “The Aviator” — but the warmth and clarity of his “Marriage Story” turn epitomizes the actor’s amiable pop-culture appeal, as well as his ongoing capacity to wrestle meaning out of messy modern times.

Martin Bregman, a talent manager and film producer whose credits include classic like “Scarface,” “Serpico,” and “Dog Day Afternoon”, died Saturday of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 92. NBC 4 first reported the news.
Born in New York City in 1926, Bregman entered the entertainment industry first as a nightclub agent before moving into personal management. As a manager, his clients would eventually include at various times luminaries like Alan Alda, Woody Allen, and Barbra Streisand among others.
Bregman’s greatest impact on Hollywood was the result of his relationship with Al Pacino. Bregman discovered Pacino performing in an Off Broadway play in the 1960s, and became his manager. He helped Pacino land his first starring film role in the 1971 drama “The Panic in Needle Park.” It was that role which brought Pacino to the attention of Francis Ford Coppola, leading to Pacino’s breakthrough as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather.”

Kate Guinzburg, who was actress Michelle Pfeiffer’s producing partner, has died, her family confirmed to TheWrap. She was 60. Through their Via Rose Productions banner, they produced such films as “Love Field,” “Dangerous Minds” and “One Fine Day” in the 1990s. Guinzburg died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles after a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer. Pfeiffer met Guinzburg when she was working as a production coordinator on 1986’s “Sweet Liberty.” Originally Pfeiffer-Guinzburg Productions, they launched their Via Rose banner in 1990 and signed a deal with Columbia and then Disney. Via Rose’s first feature 1992’s “Love Field,” earned Pfeiffer.

From killer bees to Steven Seagal, Michael Caine's seen it all. We celebrate five hilarious performances in five very bad B-movies...
"If there is one thing worse than being offered bad scripts it's being offered none at all," Michael Caine once noted - an admission that might explain some of the roles he's taken on over his long and often wonderful career.
Michael Caine may have attained national treasure status now, but from the late 70s to the middle of the 90s, classic roles like Dr Frank Bryant in Educating Rita and Scrooge The Muppet Christmas Carol were interspersed with some - shall we say - less acclaimed movies. Yet even when the production values were awful, the script stank and the films flopped, Michael Caine's performances often remained fascinating. This isn't to say he was necessarily putting his heart and soul into them -...

Bob Hoskins, the celebrated English actor who brought gravitas and a wicked smile to any genre he worked in, from crime thrillers like The Long Good Friday to fantasy comedies such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook, died from pneumonia Tuesday. He was 71.
The actor claimed to have never taken any acting lessons – according to him, he was waiting at a theatre bar for a friend to finish an audition when someone gave him a script and said, “You’re next.” He scored the part at that audition and soon after, the short-statured Hoskins became a giant on the stage and screen, beloved by audiences around the world.
Hoskins appeared in various UK television series and mini-series during the 1970s, when he also found a calling on the British stage. However, the actor broke through on the big screen in the 1980s. His first major role was in the...

My friend Joe Reid didn't write this Michelle Pfeiffer list for me. Tribeca Film pays him, yknow and The Family is now in theaters so the time is right. But all things Pfeiffer pfeel like they're pfor me anyway so I'll take it. If you have any love for La Pfeiff you'll want to read it. Joe memorably ranks 18 of the great's roles in order of how well the film uses her terrifying beauty. (I quibble with a few rankings here and there -- and where the hell are Ladyhawke and Wolf and Sweet Liberty which all trade memorably on her bewitching glares??? -- but I loved every second of it.)
On The Fabulous Baker Boys, her pantheon-sealing triumph, which ranks 8th:
It's all relative, of course. There's no real "danger" when Susie Diamond is singing "Making Whoopee" atop that piano. But the way she's wielding her considerable sensuality, it...

Out this week on Blu-ray, the Brian De Palma’s gangster picture Scarface remains a classic. We find out what its cast and crew got up to in the years after its release...
Despite the iconic image of its star, Brian De Palma’s gangster epic Scarface has far more going for it than just Al Pacino’s megawatt performance as Cuban drug lord, Tony Montana.
Memorably scripted by Oliver Stone and boasting a fine yet often overlooked ensemble cast, Scarface is a big movie in every sense. But what happened to the key players, both in front of and behind the camera, once the fake gunfire faded and the theatrical blood was washed away? Join us as we find out.

A part of the New Hollywood generation of directors, De Palma had already scored several critical and commercial hits, including Carrie, Phantom Of The Paradise, Dressed To Kill and Blow Out,...

I rarely get nervous when I talk to an actor in these Q & A sessions but this one was different.
Alan Alda has won 5 Emmy Awards and 6 Golden Globes. He’s conquered television (M*A*S*H, The West Wing), stage (Glengarry Glen Ross) and film (The Four Seasons, Sweet Liberty, The Aviator). He’s a director and writer.
He’s done everything and he’s done it with a masters hand.
Now you know why I was nervous.
I got the opportunity to talk with Alan in about his guest starring role as Jack’s dad on 30 Rock. This is his 3rd appearance on the show and he talked to us about working with Alec Baldwin, M*A*S*H, acting and his near death experience that changed his life.
For the full interview, click the audio link above or download from iTunes.
M*A*S*H was a phenomenal success.

When I was in high school, I saw Hannah and Her Sisters and had such a crush on Michael Caine. That was my gateway drug to Caine movies, and led me to Sleuth and The Wrong Box and Mona Lisa and a lot of bad movies I hate to mention (The Swarm, sadly, and Sweet Liberty). So I experienced a moment of shock in the first scene with Caine in Harry Brown, when he shuffled out of bed and looked surprisingly like my grandfather. That's what having crushes on older men in films gets you. I don't even want to talk about Harrison Ford in the last Indiana Jones movie.
After recoving from my little moment of shock and mortality, I found Harry Brown an absorbing combination of melodrama and vigilantism. Caine plays the title character, who as he is growing older finds himself increasingly alone in the world. His...
