Jeff Margolis will never forget his first time directing the Academy Awards — we won’t let him.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the 61st Academy Awards. You may not remember that “Rain Man” won Best Picture, Barry Levinson Best Director, Dustin Hoffman Best Actor, and Jodie Foster Best Actress for “The Accused.” But seared into our collective subconscious is the production number that opened the show — already, you’re cringing at the thought — featuring Snow White and Rob Lowe.
To this day, clickbait headlines (from The Guardian in 2019: “How Snow White and Some Coconuts Killed the 1989 Oscars”) are a testament to that debacle’s enduring legacy. Hollywood, nor the world, had never seen anything like it, which was kind of the whole point of the thing, according to Margolis, who spoke to IndieWire about his memories of what Collider just last year proclaimed, “the worst moment in Oscars history…...

The '80s is often considered a Golden Age for film, which introduced classics like Planes, Trains and Automobiles and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial that still holds up today. However, among the many gems of the time period, there are some problematic films that don't hold up under scrutiny.
Certain films, such as Revenge of the Nerds and The Toy, are obviously inappropriate and would never get past today's audience. Other films, such as Rain Man and Sixteen Candles, are still beloved classics despite their glaring issues. These '80s films did not age well and have problematic aspects and scenes that cannot be overlooked.

After being in talks for seven years, the sequel to Ben Affleck’s often-overlooked action thriller has finally got greenlit. But finally, with Affleck’s last collaboration with Amazon, Air, becoming a success for the studio, which currently stands at a raving 93%, Amazon has now acquired the rights for The Accountant 2.

Mark Johnson is a veteran producer who won a best picture Oscar in 1989 for Rain Man, one of many collaborations with director Barry Levinson (the pair earned a second best picture nom in 1992 for Bugsy). Just over three decades later, Johnson earned his third Oscar nomination for Focus Features’ The Holdovers, his second film with director Alexander Payne following 2017’s Downsizing.
Set in 1970 over Christmas break at a tony New England boarding school, The Holdovers stars Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti as history teacher Paul Hunnam, who must look after the angsty Angus (newcomer Dominic Sessa) as he cannot travel home to be with family for the holiday. Added to the lonely trio is Oscar nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s Mary Lamb, the school’s grieving cook who recently lost her son in Vietnam.

Just last month, Tom Cruise entered a partnership with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films, but what kind of movies does Cruise really want to make? By risking life and limb with real stunts in movies such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise has become the biggest action star on the planet. While the actor will doubtlessly continue in the action realm, a report from Variety states that Cruise would like to return to the early days when he worked on serious, dramatic movies with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, and Paul Thomas Anderson.
In the early days of his stardom, Cruise was a bonafide awards contender, scoring Best Actor nominations at the Academy Awards for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, but it...

When you take a peek at Mark Johnson‘s resume, you’re immediately astounded. Consider this partial list of projects he’s been attached to as a producer or executive producer during a career that’s exceeded four decades: “Rain Man” (which won Johnson his lone Oscar), “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Diner,” “Tin Men,” “The Natural,” “Bugsy,” “Galaxy Quest,” “The Notebook,” “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” And now, add “The Holdovers” to the list, for which Johnson has landed his third Academy Award nomination (this one for Best Picture).
“Every day, I still feel like a young boy who can’t believe he’s allowed to do this,” Johnson admits. “Somebody asked me if the Oscar nomination was old hat to me, and I’m like, ‘Are you kidding? I’m thrilled.’ I’m very humbled by it. There are a number of movies I’ve made that I think...

On June 17, 1972, thieves acting on behalf of Richard Nixon's presidential campaign broke into the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC, the location of the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The group was looking for papers and secrets that would have given Nixon an unfair advantage in the election. Nixon was bafflingly still elected during this kerfuffle and served as president for two more years before enough details about the break-in emerged to warrant his infamous resignation from office. The many, many details of the Watergate scandal have been recorded in innumerable books, documentaries, and Hollywood dramas in the ensuing decades, and Watergate shows are being made to this day; the miniseries "Gaslit" aired in 2022 and "White House Plumbers" in 2023.
The Watergate scandal represented a loss of American innocence for many. It was positive proof that the Republican party was openly corrupt. The scandal was bad enough, but then Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon of all his recorded,...

For the first seven decades of Oscar history, the Academy Awards and the general public were more or less in agreement on what constituted a “good” movie. Box office champions like Gone With the Wind, The Best Years of Our Lives, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, The Sound of Music, The Godfather, Rain Man, Titanic, and many more all won best picture and plenty of other Oscar categories. But then, after a last gasp from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2004, everything changed. Over the past 20 years, it’s become routine for the No. 1 movie at the box office to not even get nominated for best picture, let alone win.
But this year, filmgoers and awards voters may have finally reached a compromise. The worldwide phenomenon “Barbenheimer” is poised to give just as much of a jolt to the Oscar...

Carmy's father is a mysterious character in The Bear, with little information given about him other than he's considered a deadbeat and not in the picture. Fan theories suggest he may have died before the events of the show. Casting the right actor to play Carmy's father in flashbacks is crucial to reveal more about his character. Actors like Dustin Hoffman, Christopher Meloni, and William H. Macy could authentically capture the complexity of Carmy's father. The addition of actors like Jonathan Banks, Michael Shannon, Paul Giamatti, Jon Favreau, Bryan Cranston, Gary Sinise, or Robert De Niro would bring unique qualities and depth to Carmy's father, adding a compelling layer to the show's storyline.
With season 3 of The Bear in the works, one of the show's biggest mysteries is yet to be unveiled regarding the identity of Carmy's father, and a few actors would be perfect for the role. The upcoming season has many anticipated elements,...

Despite his immense success, Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar, but with his new deal focusing on original movies, that could change soon. Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar four times but has yet to receive the coveted award. The Academy Awards don't often recognize performances in franchise movies, so Cruise's return to original films may increase his chances of winning an Oscar.
Tom Cruise is, without a doubt, one of the most accomplished actors in Hollywood. However, one achievement has eluded the star over the course of his 43-year career. Cruise's breakout role was as Joel in Risky Business in 1983, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. He starred as Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun a few years later and quickly cemented himself as one of Hollywood's leading men. Watch Kelly Clarkson Annihilate Natalie Portman in ‘Black Swan’ Oscar Trivia: ‘I’m So Sorry’ | Video
Kelly Clarkson didn’t come to play.
In an intense session of Oscar trivia on Monday’s “The Kelly Clarkson Show” emcee’d by “Bros” funnyman Guy Branum, guest Natalie Portman was caught by surprise by Clarkson’s Hollywood know-how, even at one point admitting she’s “kind of” asleep when Branum ribbed her about the 3-0 shutout.
But the highlight of the game came when Clarkson beat Portman to the buzzer on a question about Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 horror fantasia “Black Swan,” a project that won Portman her lead actress Oscar.
The game, cheekily titled “May I Have Another December” in a nod to Portman’s current Netflix feature costarring Julianne Moore, kicks off in the segment above with Portman down and Branum offering her a pep talk.

Nothing defined New Hollywood quite like "The Graduate," and for very good reason. The film was chock full of innovation, from the salacious script to the ground-breaking cinematography, but the movie might be best remembered for its incredible cast. The coming-of-age classic features career-defining performances from Anne Bancroft, already a huge star at the time, and Dustin Hoffman, the best actor ever, in one of the first major roles of his long and storied career.

Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant brought Ben Affleck in a different kind of action role. The film ended its run with a worldwide total of $155 million and a sequel was announced, but struggled to gain traction. The Accountant starred Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, a mathematical savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town Cpa office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. The film sported an impressive cast that included Jon Bernthal, John Lithgow, J.K. Simmons, Anna Kendrick and Jeffrey Tambor.
Industry insider Daniel Richtman has confirmed that The Accountant 2 is now a go with Amazon producing the film. Gavin O’Connor will return to direct with Ben Affleck reprising his role. Back in 2021, O’Connor appeared on the CinemaBlend podcast where he revealed that he had just closed the deal for the sequel.

“Barbie” triumphed at the box office. Can it conquer the Oscars too?
If history is any guide, it may have to settle for the adoration of audiences over the acclaim of awards voters. The Academy has nominated some recent commercial juggernauts for best picture — last year “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick” made the cut. But it tends to hand out the top prize to movies that hail from the art house, not the blockbuster part of the business. In fact, it’s been 20 years since the highest-grossing domestic film was also the best picture winner. That last happened with 2003’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” which took all 11 categories in which it was nominated.

The Untold Story Of A Lost Classic: What Ever Happened To Gram Parsons’ Sci-Fi Film ‘Saturation 70’?
In the late 1960s, Gram Parsons, fresh from leaving The Byrds and becoming close pals with the Rolling Stones, signed on to star in a sci-fi film, Saturation 70.
Directed by Anthony Foutz, who worked with the likes of Orson Welles and Richard Lyford and was the son of a very early Walt Disney exec, the film was shot across Joshua Tree and Los Angeles.
But Saturation 70, which also featured the work of Douglas Trumbull, the pioneering special effects wizard behind 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner, was never finished, and the footage subsequently vanished.
But a new book tells the wild story of a possible lost classic.
Chris Campion, who rediscovered the film while working on a book about The Mamas & The Papas, is putting together Saturation 70: A Vision Past of the Future Foretold, raising money via Kickstarter for the project with a view to publish next spring via Wolf+Salmon.

Chris Campion, who rediscovered the film while working on a book about The Mamas & The Papas, is putting together Saturation 70: A Vision Past of the Future Foretold, raising money via Kickstarter for the project with a view to publish next spring via Wolf+Salmon.

Harrison Ford has been the face of Indiana Jones since the franchise’s inception. But he was once reluctant to do a fifth Indiana Jones film without Steven Spielberg to work with.

Ford recently revisited his iconic Indiana Jones franchise with Dial of Destiny. But before its 2023 debut, there had been talk of a fifth movie for years. Spielberg commented on how interested he was developing the sequel, with the only holdout being George Lucas.
“It’s up to George,” Spielberg once told Games Radar. “We have already agreed on the genre of the fifth movie, we already have a concept in mind. I don’t know where George is with the story. There is no Indy 5 until George says there is.”
Ford expressed similar interest in returning to the franchise.

Of all the actors to get caught up in the #MeToo movement, perhaps one of the most surprising was Dustin Hoffman. Back in 2017, when the actor was fresh off of delivering one of his finest latter-day performances in The Meyerowitz Stories, the actor was confronted (some say ambushed) at a 20th-anniversary screening of Wag the Dog by comedian John Oliver, who questioned him about accusations of inappropriate behaviour from thirty years prior on the set of Death of a Salesman. The story went viral, and soon a story about Hoffman’s treatment of Meryl Streep on the set of Kramer vs Kramer also got renewed play, much to Streep’s dismay, who said Hoffman had apologized years earlier, and she accepted that.
In the years since, Hoffman’s career has been low-key, with him only showing up in a few indie and international films, which is a significant comedown for...

However, per :a[Deadline]{href='https://deadline.com/2023/10/barry-levinson-assassination-al-pacino-1235576261/' }’s reporting, a switcheroo up top has landed the project a new helmsman in the form of Oscar-winner Barry Levinson

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Japanese comedian Shinagawa Hiroshi has been set as the director of “Among the Dead,” the first project flowing from the co-production and co-financing venture between U.S.-based People of Culture Studios and Japan’s Yoshimoto Kogyo.
The previously-announced project is an English-language, found footage zombie movie in which, following an apocalypse of the undead, one emotionally unstable man abandons friends and family to go live among the few remaining zombies before they’re all gone.
The screenplay was written by father/daughter duo, Andy Cosby and Charlie Danger Cosby, collectively known as Midnight Pizza. Other writing credits go to Brian Caldirola, Patrick Hasson and Juan Carlos Saizarbitoria.
Shinagawa is one-half of the comedy duo Shinagawa Shoji, alongside Tomoharu Shoji, and has a considerable acting filmography in his own right including “Deadman Inferno,” “One Third,” and “Drop.” Shinagawa additionally served as director, writer, and starred in the 2011 comedy-drama “Slapstick Brothers.

Movies containing portrayals of autism haven’t always treated the subject with sensitivity and conviction. Some breakout successes like “Rain Man” have conflated it with the savant syndrome, which isn’t representative of the full spectrum of people with autism. Writer Tony Spiridakis, who has raised an autistic child, and his friend, director Tony Goldwyn, approach the subject with the benefit of first-hand experience. They even have an autistic child actor in the title role (William Fitzgerald).

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest movie makers of all time, with titles such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” and “The Irishman.” The Academy Awards think that highly of him, too. While there's plenty to love about the dominant sci-fi franchises like "Star Wars" and "Star Trek," I can't help but get even more excited when a promising, original sci-fi movie comes along. Especially when it looks as good as "The Creator."
Directed by "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" filmmaker Gareth Edwards, "The Creator" is set in a future where the human race is battling against artificial intelligence on an unbelievable scale. In the film, Joshua (John David Washington of "Tenet"), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan of "Eternals"), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war. Unfortunately, that end to the war means bringing about the end of mankind as well. Joshua discovers that this world-ending weapon is actually an AI that...

The 1980s saw a surge of epic action, sci-fi, and fantasy movies due to an increasing desire for escapism after Cold War tensions and economic shifts. Filmmakers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg dominated the 1980s with their blockbuster movies and continue to influence the cinema landscape today. Original dramas like "Rain Man" and high-concept films like "Back to the Future" and "Batman" achieved significant box office success, proving the diversity of successful movies in the 1980s.
Many iconic movies were released in the 1980s, but some of the highest-grossing movies of the 1980s still come as a surprise. Tom Cruise, like most actors, has been regularly promoting his blockbuster movies overseas for years. But although it’s a common tradition among stars now, Cruise believed that he was the actor who normalized it.

As the face of two of Hollywood's biggest franchises, Tom Cruise is one of the most prolific action movie stars in cinematic history. Cruise's recently released Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One became the highest-rated movie of the celebrated franchise which surprisingly seems to get better with each new film. Cruise has starred in 44 feature films to date since his career began with 1981's Endless Love. The upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will be the eighth film of Cruise's longest-standing franchise and will mark his 45th performance in a feature film.
Cruise has been in dozens of iconic movies from The Color of Money and Rain Man to A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire but has surprisingly not won an Academy Award despite four nominations. Cruise even starred in Stanley Kubrick's final film Eyes Wide Shut and Paul Thomas Anderson's cult classic Magnolia.

After completing his work on the latest PG-13 installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise may be taking on a much darker role with his next project.
Now playing in theaters, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is just the latest collaboration between Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie. Cruise previously starred as the titular character in the McQuarrie-helmed 2012 film Jack Reacher, and the two would go on to work together on four Mission: Impossible movies, including the upcoming Dead Reckoning Part Two. McQuarrie also worked as a writer on Cruise's take on The Mummy as well as last year's hit sequel Top Gun: Maverick. What all of these films have in common is a PG-13 rating, and speaking with Empire, McQuarrie says the pair will be pushing the envelope further with their next project.

Nintendo in the mid-to-late 80s sure was something to behold. It’s probably the closest thing the video game industry had to a monopoly. Sure, the Sega Master System was around and Atari was still on life support, but the Nintendo Entertainment System was absolutely dominant in society. We didn’t even call it “the Nes.” It was just “Nintendo.” For many, “playing video games” was “playing Nintendo.”
Nintendo’s major market share led to some interesting marketing experiments. Captain N: The Game Master was an animated series that not only advertised different games as part of its lore, but even included third-party game heroes like Simon Belmont and Mega Man as supporting characters. Then there’s The Wizard: an attempt to promote the upcoming Super Mario Bros. 3 via a bizarre family film version of Rain Man that included the questionable choice of casting Christian Slater and doing nothing with him.

Ranking the best Tom Cruise characters in film is a nearly impossible endeavor. Tom Cruise is a rare actor whose leading man looks are surpassed not just by his acting ability but also by his willingness to go above and beyond what each role entails. From blockbusters with lead characters that are practically tailor-made for Cruise to movies that prove more of a challenge against preconceived notions about the actor, he always rises to the occasion.
Indeed, if the best Tom Cruise characters have one thing in common, they all set the bar high for A-list actors. Apart from doing his own stunts and delivering great performances every chance he gets, Cruise is also known for deeply involving himself in the filmmaking process, which often results in noted improvements. Tom Cruise may be the last person standing when it comes to old-fashioned Hollywood movie stardom. While others have fallen by the wayside, Cruise still has the ability to deliver crowd-pleasing, spectacular movies that appeal to the all-important “four-quadrant” demographic when it comes to paying customers at the box office—at least as long as the words “Top Gun” or “Mission: Impossible” appear somewhere in the title, anyway.
Whether Cruise can score with movies outside those two intellectual properties is a subject for a different article, but it’s clear that he’s done so plenty of times in the past. More importantly, what has often gotten overlooked in Cruise’s long string of successes is that not only is he a movie star, but he’s also a damn good and frequently underrated actor, with a range that has taken him beyond the “Tom Cruise” brand a number of times.

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
On September 6, 2020, the first day of principal photography on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise drove a motorbike off a mountain. Specifically, he drove a custom-made Honda Crf 250 off a purpose-built ramp on the side of Norway’s Helsetkopen mountain, a vertiginous rock face sat some 1,200 meters above sea level. Then he plunged 4,000 feet into the ravine below before opening his parachute barely 500 feet from the ground.
When he landed, director, Christopher Mc Quarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then Cruise picked himself up and did it all again another seven times, just to make sure the footage was perfect.

Until the 1980’s, Hollywood had a strange relationship with the Vietnam War. While the war was actually being fought, movies, typically, did not depict the war unless they were something like John Wayne’s The Green Berets. If the war was dealt with, usually it was done metaphorically, or by using another war as a stand-in, such as what happened with 1970’s Mash. This started to change after the war finally ended, with the late seventies seeing the release of three major films – The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now and Coming Home, Despite their popularity, during the first half of the eighties, when the war was dealt with on-screen it was typically as wish fulfillment, where action stars such as Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone single-handedly refought the war, and won, to the delight of audiences.

The raucous period drama “Firebrand” was the official opening-night film at the 57th annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday night in the spa resort town outside Prague, but there was a lot more going on in and around the Grand Hall at the Hotel Thermal than just the on-screen battle between Alicia Vikander’s Catherine Parr and Jude Law’s King Henry VIII.
It also included the presentation of awards to Vikander and Russell Crowe, the usual complement of opening-night speeches, an extended dance number that appeared to be performed on ice skates (though it wasn’t on ice but on an artificial surface that mimicked ice but could be walked on safely) and, during breaks and after the movie, complete concerts by the British band Morcheeba and by Crowe’s nine-piece band, Indoor Garden Party.
If you missed that last part, don’t worry: Crowe was filming...
