English teacher John Keating inspires his students to look at poetry with a different perspective of authentic knowledge and feelings.
When the boys show Professor Keating his old senior yearbook picture, it is, in reality, Robin Williams's high school senior picture when he was a student at Redwood High School in Larkspur, California, north of San Francisco.
Close your eyes, close your eyes! Close 'em! Now, describe what you see.
Todd Anderson: Uh, I-I close my eyes.
John Keating: Yes.
Todd Anderson: Uh, and this image floats beside me.
John Keating: A sweaty-toothed madman.
Todd Anderson: A sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brain.
John Keating: Oh, that's *excellent*! Now...
When Todd receives the desk set for his birthday, and Neil and Todd go to throw the desk set off the bridge, the desk set is clearly covered in plastic shrink wrap. However, when the desk set is thrown, papers and pens still go flying everywhere.
(Foreshadowing) In the scene in the hall where Keating speaks of Carpe Diem; he tells the boys that one day each of them will "..stop breathing, turn cold and die". When he says this line, Robert Shawn Leonard's character is in frame. This predicts his death.
