The year’s shortest month gets the biggest bang as Severin Films today announced their February 27th releases featuring uncensored 4K restorations of the infamous 1960’s western ‘roughies’ from the depraved minds of exploitation legends Bob Cresse and Lee Frost, Hot Spur and Scavengers.
‘“The Kings of esoteric boutique companies” (Video WatchBlog) are also proud to release – because Severin co-founder/president David Gregory considers it one of the best films he saw as a jury member at the FrightFest and Sitges Film Festivals – the North American disc premiere of director/co-writer Andrew Legge’s time-travel mind-bender, Lola.
Previous limited edition title Spider Labyrinth also enters wide release.
Here’s everything you need to know about Severin’s February 2024 lineup…

Like many of Taylor Sheridan’s shows, the cast of his flagship creation Yellowstone is a major part of its draw. The cast is an intriguing mix of absolute icons, seasoned veterans, character actors, international artists and, at the time, up-and-comers. While their notoriety has certainly evolved to the point where they are inseparable from Yellowstone, this amazing group of performers has an equally amazing body of work behind them.
While these may not be the roles the cast are known for, or even remembered for, there are several stops along the way to the fictional Montana that are worth mentioning. With Yellowstone currently on hiatus, now is the perfect time to revisit these films and shows, and see how well rounded the cast truly is.

When you’re staging a classic cat-and-mouse game, it helps to have absolute beasts on hand to portray the cagey adversaries. Criminal Record, a British crime drama in the powerful tradition of Line of Duty and Prime Suspect, is blessed to have two of the best circling each other for eight gripping episodes. Cush Jumbo, who’s most familiar to U.S. audiences for her brash performance on The Good Wife, is the underdog: Detective Sergeant June Lenker, only a year-and-a-half on the beat when she goes toe to toe with veteran Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty. This steely pro, played with a grave and cadaverous intensity by former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi, is none too pleased when June digs into a possible miscarriage of justice in a murder case he closed back in 2012. The catalyst: a panicked call to a domestic-abuse hotline from an anonymous woman who says her...

It’s not uncommon for a prominent British actor to be labeled British acting royalty. All types, from Laurence Olivier to Maggie Smith, have worn the label but nobody perhaps has literally worn that title recently to the extent as Helen Mirren. She has had a long varied career and has earned her place as one of the holders of acting’s triple crowns by playing a variety of British monarchs.
Her Oscar came for playing the British Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” which dealt with her reaction to the unexpected death of Princess Diana. She would revisit the role nine years later for a Tony on Broadway in the play “The Audience,” which dealt with Elizabeth’s relationships with the various prime ministers who have served under her. It was a different Queen, Elizabeth I, that would bring Mirren one of her four Emmys, when she starred in...

Back in the fall of 2003, Femi Oguns — then a working British actor who had appeared in a number of well-known U.K. TV shows — was on the streets of London handing out flyers for his yet-to-open school.
Having felt that his own experience at drama school had been stifled due to his race (he was one of just two non-white students in his year) and that there was a distinct lack of diverse talent in such institutions and a major gap in the market, he decided to launch a part-time alternative. It was to be somewhere, says Oguns — the eldest son of a British-born Nigerian mother and a Nigerian immigrant father — that would give “actors of color and from all different backgrounds the opportunity to celebrate their identity through acting.”
And so, having parked his own on-screen ambitions (although he would star alongside Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect soon after...

Reaching into Inspector Morse’s past for a prequel series was a gamble that paid off handsomely. Endeavour, which followed the young detective over a seven-year period from constable to detective sergeant in the 1960s and early 1970s, just concluded after nine series. It was an exemplary prequel, beloved by newcomers and by fans of the original Inspector Morse, which it referenced playfully and with imagination.
Endeavour’s success was not a given, nor should it be laid at the feet of simple IP recognition. Prime Suspect 1973, which attempted the same trick by following a younger version of Helen Mirren’s celebrated Dci Jane Tennison, lasted only one series. The very public catalyst that led to Prince Andrew’s dramatic fall from grace is heading to Netflix.
The streamer has acquired Scoop, a feature film based on the story behind the disgraced royal’s appearance on the BBC’s flagship news show Newsnight in 2019 — an hour of television that became one of the most significant, notorious and ridiculed interviews in recent years (and one that was then used against Andrew in the civil case filed by his sexual assault accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre).

Montana hasn’t seen the likes of Helen Mirren behind a shotgun before – until now. The Oscar-winning Dame, a pioneer in the film-to-tv migration with her BBC show “Prime Suspect,” plays Cara Dutton, the family matriarch in Taylor Sheridan’s “1923,” the “Yellowstone” prequel and “1883” sequel. As it turns out, the tough-but-tender Mrs. Dutton can chase an injured interloper crawling across her land and pull the trigger while looking the villain in the eye as he begs for his life. Nevertheless, the killing leaves her wailing at the sky like an agitated mama wolf pushed to her limits. Fortunately for the clan’s future, Cara’s antagonist has given his last shout.

The official trailer for 1923, Paramount+’s second Yellowstone prequel, is here.
The trailer for the series, which stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford as Cara and Jacon Dutton, opens with a shot of Mirren being approached by Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield, who announces that he’s moved into the ranch next to theirs.
“Well, this is the Yellowstone, and you have no rights here,” she says. Shortly after, Ford approaches the town’s sheriff about starting a range war with Whitfield, who has partnered up with Jerome Flynn’s (Game of Thrones) Banner Creighton. Later in the video, Mirren threatens Flynn, saying, “Men kill quick — with a bullet or a noose — but your fight is with me, and I kill much slower.”
Over the course of the minute-and-a-half trailer, Mirren and Ford fiercely defend their home from Whitfield, who wants to own the whole valley.

The project from showrunner Taylor Sheridan follows patriarch Jacob (Ford) and matriarch Cara (Mirren) and explores “the early 20th century, when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”

You know the story.
Superhero psychologist with early on-set Parkinson’s publicly saves the life of a teenager, meets a detective while hanging out with sex workers down the pub, is immediately hired as a consultant on a murder case and then becomes the prime suspect. Oh and he’s played by Poldark (aka Aidan Turner).
ITV latest glossy thriller The Suspect, based on the debut novel of Michael Robotham, is a semi-ridiculous, tropey but nonetheless twisty-turny ball of fun told over five episodes broadcast weekly. Somewhat in the mold of HBO shows like The Undoing and Big Little Lies, where we revel in seeing beautiful people with aspirational lives get their comeuppance, this London-set version establishes Turner’s Joe McLoughlin as a man with a perfect life.

Masterpiece/PBS and Maven Screen Media are developing a five-part series based on the public and private life of Clementine Churchill, the wife of the late prime minister Winston Churchill, alongside David Thomspon and Sayoko Teitelbaum’s Origin Pictures.
Emmy-nominated “Boardwalk Empire” writer Margaret Nagle will pen the script for the series (working title: “Mrs. Churchill”) and executive produce along with Thompson, Teitelbaum and Maven co-founders Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler, as well as Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.
The show centers on the “untold story of a fiercely Independent and very modern heroine who risked everything to save her country and the world from fascism—and her husband from himself.” While several dramatized narratives have focused on Winston’s story, the series aims to highlight Clementine’s achievements.
“Winston has said that the Second World War would have been impossible without Clementine, and yet she has not been given the credit she deserves.

Last Year’s Winner: “The Queen’s Gambit”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: For the most part, only the anthology side of the category could have a streak. “American Crime Story” has already won the category twice, so should “Impeachment” win, it would make “American Crime Story” the first anthology since “Prime Suspect” to win the category three times. Other possible streaks are at the network level. Netflix could win a second year in a row with a title like “Maid.” Meanwhile, while it hasn’t all been consecutive, a win for HBO with a title like “The White Lotus” would mean the network spent a decade dominating the Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series category, winning seven out of ten years.
Notable Ineligible Series: “Loki” (submitted as a Drama Series); “Black Bird” (the season will not air in time to be eligible); “The White House Plumbers” (the season will not air...

My recent column about the plight of awards consultants in this age of Too Much TV clearly struck a nerve. Among everything I’ve written about the Emmys this year, it’s received the most reaction — mostly from publicists nodding their heads in frustration with the jam of events and campaigns.
Since I’m apparently in a solicitous mood, this time I’ll turn my attention to the awards rule makers at the Television Academy — the folks who receive the lion’s share of ire this time of year, including in columns such as this. And I’m sure some of my more outlandish ideas, such as nominating every eligible program in the variety talk field, or creating a special category for broadcast series, has elicited plenty of eye rolls over in North Hollywood.
But I feel their pain. It’s impossible to keep up with the evolution of television these days,...

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are set to star in Taylor Sheridan’s new “Yellowstone” prequel “1932” at Paramount+, Variety has learned.
The show follows the Dutton family in the titular year, a time of Prohibition, the Great Depression, and westward expansion. “1932” is a followup to “1883,” the latter of which told the story of the Dutton family as they made their way to Montana to found what would become the Yellowstone Ranch in the mothership series. “1932” was ordered to series at Paramount+ back in February. The show falls under Sheridan’s expansive overall deal with Paramount.
This is the second TV starring role Ford has lined up in recent months. It was announced in April that Ford would star in the upcoming Apple comedy series “Shrinking,” the first major TV role of his career. The iconic actor is best known for starring in film franchises like “Star Wars,” “Blade Runner,...

Exclusive: Kevin Rankin (Claws) and Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black) are set as leads opposite Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits in the CBS police drama pilot East New York.
Co-written by William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn and directed by Mike Robin, the project centers on Regina Haywood (Warren), the newly promoted deputy inspector of East New York, an impoverished, working-class neighborhood at the eastern edge of Brooklyn. She leads a diverse group of officers and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to deploy her creative methods of serving and protecting during the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification.
Rankin will play Tommy Killian, a charming and confident detective – but his thoughts on gender relations are in need of updating.
Rodriguez will portray Crystal Morales, an intuitive detective who is not easily intimidated. She closely guards her private life, making her an object of endless speculation.

Channel 4 has pre-bought Hitler: A Life in Pictures, an archival behind-the-scenes doc series exploring the public and private life of Germany’s infamous dictator. Woodcut Media is producing the four-part series and has struck a co-production and finance agreement with distributor Rainmaker Content. The doc features photos and videos from two photographers who dedicated their lives to documenting Hitler – Heinrich Hoffmann and assistant Eva Braun. The archive footage includes 1300 recently digitized, rarely-seen photos taken by Hoffmann and material garnered from Braun’s personal photo collection, along with more than four hours of her home videos mostly filmed at Hitler’s fortified chalet in the Bavarian Alps. “A picture paints a thousand words and the unique images we have procured for this Hitler series speak volumes about the depth of psychological manipulation that led to the rise of the Nazi regime,” said Woodcut Exec Matthew Gordon.

It follows Doctor Joe O’Loughlin, played by Turner, who appears to have the perfect life – a devoted wife, a loving daughter, successful practice as a clinical psychologist, media profile and a publishing deal. Last Year’s Winner: “Watchmen”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Repeat winners aren’t the norm in Limited Series, and while they do happen, it’s more common to see networks go on hot streaks — albeit brief ones. Currently, HBO has won the Best Limited Series category in back-to-back years, first for “Chernobyl” and then for “Watchmen.” The premium cable giant has also won in three of the last four years and seven of the last 11. Its last win gave it more trophies for Best Limited Series than any other network in history, and yet HBO has still never won more than twice in a row. Only one network has: NBC, from 1986 – 1988.
Fun Fact: Speaking of repeats, only four series have earned more than two nominations in the Limited Series category: “Horatio Hornblower” and “Fargo” both have three, “American Horror Story” has four, and “Prime Suspect” is the all-time leader with five.

The HBO limited series Mare of Easttown, which received a whopping 16 Emmy nominations this year, got off to such a compelling start with a title character so strong that Kate Winslet admitted in a chat for Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees award-season event that she needed to read only two of the seven episodes created and written by Brad Ingelsby to commit. Winslet was joined in the panel by Ingelsby and Craig Zobel, who helmed all the episodes.
“I had no idea how it was going to end,” Winslet said. “That was truly wonderful, because it meant I was responding to the script in the way that Brad was hoping an audience would respond, that feeling of getting to the end of each episode and going [she exhales sharply], no, that can’t be the end of the episode, we need more and we need it now. Waiting for each script to...

The Crown is bringing another pivotal figure in British history to life during its fifth season.
Netflix announced Friday that Jonny Lee Miller had landed the role of Prime Minister John Major.
Major served as prime minister and leader of the UK’s Conservative party from 1990 to 1997 after serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary under Margaret Thatcher from 1987 to 1990.
As has been the case with The Crown, the series is, once again, revamping its cast, which it does every two seasons.
Miller joins an ensemble that will include Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones) as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) as Princess Margaret, and Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager) as Princess Diana.
Dominic West (The Affair) has also reportedly been cast as Prince Charles, but casting has yet to be confirmed.

Kate Winslet’s tough but tender small-town police detective Mare Sheehan of HBO’s acclaimed crime thriller “Mare of Easttown” is the latest in a long line of female TV detectives including S. Epatha Merkerson (“Law & Order”); Helen Mirren (“Prime Suspect”); Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer); Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: Svu”) and Regina King (“Watchmen”).
Unfortunately, it took an inordinate amount of time for actresses to get a fair shake in police procedurals. Early TV crime dramas were inundated with the likes of taciturn toughies Lee Marvin (“M Squad”), Robert Taylor (“The Detectives”), Jack Webb (“Dragnet”) and Broderick Crawford (“Highway Patrol”). Way too much testosterone.
But slowly the dynamics began to change especially with the rise of the Women’s Movement. Here’s a look at five trailblazing female cop shows who paved the way.
