Hollywood’s most notable bombs are — sadly — just as well-known as its biggest hits, a factor that a new book joyously celebrates.
From British film critic Tim Robey, “Box Office Poison” digs up the dirt on some of cinema’s wildest misfires, from grand follies to misunderstood masterpieces, disastrous sequels to catastrophic literary adaptations, going behind the scenes to examine how they ended careers, bankrupted studios and changed film history.
Among the features in Robey’s crosshairs are David Lynch’s “Dune,” plus “Speed 2: Cruise Control,” “Gigli,” “Catwoman,” “Pan” and — of course — “Cats.”
In this exclusive extract from the book, being released by Hanover Square Press in the U.S. on Nov. 5, it’s the turn of the swashbuckling catastrophe that was Renny Harlin and Geana Davis’ “Cutthroat Island.” Costing upwards of $115 million to make, the watery flop sank almost without a trace in 1995, earning just $18.5 million globally and...

Match #1: “Switchblade” Jay White def. Shane Taylor The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Taylor and White locked up. Taylor bullied Jay White into the turnbuckles, using his size advantage. Jay White applied a side headlock and then chop blocked Taylor. Lee Moriarty grabbed White’s ankle as the ref was distracted. Taylor seized the opportunity to take down Jay White. Taylor stomped on the sternum on Jay White. Shane Taylor hit a leg drop on Switchblade. Jay White rallied back with a flurry of offense. Jay White tried for a sunset flip; Taylor sat down for a splash, but Jay White tumbled out of the way in the nick of time.

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Veteran visual effects producer Nancy St. John, whose credits include the films “Babe” and “Gladiator” (both of which won VFX Oscar kudos), has died at the age of 70, the Visual Effects Society confirmed.
St. John held a career in VFX and computer animation that spanned more than four decades. She was a former Ves executive board committee member who received the distinction of Fellow in 2021.
“Nancy and I served together on the Society’s executive committee, and she passionately represented the worldwide members,” past Ves chair Jeffrey A. Documentary filmmaker and occasional author Laurent Bouzereau has found a novel way to approach the work of Brian De Palma. Despite its somewhat wordy title, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is generating a great deal of excitement among action fans. The first trailer impressed and, following her memorable role in No Time to Die, this feels like the perfect project to cement Ana de Armas as a badass lead.
Underworld and Total Recall helmer Len Wiseman being tapped to direct raised eyebrows from the start given his hit-and-miss track record. Now, a new report from The Wrap (via ActioNewz.com) suggests he struggled to deliver on the John Wick franchise's promise of top-notch fight scenes.
The trade reveals that John Wick franchise helmer Chad Stahelski was enlisted to reshoot the majority of Ballerina (explaining its release date delay). The filmmaker came on board to improve the action and, as a result, additional photography was extensive.
There's even chatter on social media that Stahelski could have a "Directed by" credit if he wanted.

When the trailer for "Ballerina" arrived, it promised action sequences that actually looked like they could hold up against those of the "John Wick" movies. The spin-off film, from director Len Wiseman, is set between "John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum" and "John Wick: Chapter 4," and stars Ana de Armas as the titular assassin, who sets out for revenge against those that killed her family. Following the lifeless, joyless, and ultimately pointless return to the Wick-verse that was "The Continental," this latest spin-off isn't exactly a guaranteed hit — even with a confirmed Keanu Reeves cameo. But again, the trailer showcased some combat sequences that suggested Wiseman has successfully aped the unique action stylings of franchise director Chad Stahelski -- meaning, "Ballerina" might just deliver on the action front (at the least).
Now, we might finally know why the action in "Ballerina" looks as high-quality and uniquely Stahelskian as it does. In...

Prior to the weekend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled new prototypes for robots, the much-anticipated self-driving robotaxi (Cybercab) and autonomous Robovan; but while the sleek edgeless designs may bring to mind his company’s signature look, discerning users on social media noticed another striking similarity — the futuristic mechanics that color filmmaker Alex Proyas’ work in 2004’s Will Smith starrer I, Robot.
The uncanny resemblance didn’t go unnoticed — nor appreciated — by Proyas, who took to Musk’s own X platform to slam the executive for ripping off his creations.
“Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?” the Aussie director, who is also behind pics like 1994’s The Crow, wrote.

Will Smith is known to deliver blockbuster hits, but after a minor roadblock along the way (or should we say a ‘slap’), the actor fell from the good graces of fans and Hollywood. But he is back and as strong as ever, given the recent success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Taking one step further to reclaim his career, he could be potentially collaborating with Michael Bay, if all things go right.
Will Smith | Credit: Interview with Speedy Morman / Complex Yt
A collaboration that will undeniably have a lot of action, it seems a bit similar to Henry Cavill’s $200 million disaster film, which left audiences underwhelmed. While Cavill’s film faltered despite its massive budget, Will Smith’s potential upcoming action-packed flick seems poised to take a different route, possibly making it yet another blockbuster in Smith’s filmography.

Blockbuster action director Michael Bay and Will Smith are set to reunite for Netflix film Fast And Loose. Here are the details.
Having previously collaborated fruitfully on the Bad Boys franchise in the 1990s and early 2000s, Will Smith and Michael Bay are finally reuniting for a new movie. It’s an action thriller called Fast And Loose, which is being made for Netflix.
It’s Smith and Bay’s first film together for two decades, and sounds an awful lot like 1990’s Total Recall but with the bits on Mars taken out.
The synopsis, via Deadline, reads as follows:
A man wakes up in Tijuana with no memories. As he pieces together his past, he learns he’s been living two lives: one as a crime kingpin and the other as an undercover CIA agent.
Despite the well publicised events at the Oscars a few years ago, Will Smith...

Colin Farrell recently became a topic of interest amongst Hollywood fans after the recent debut of HBO’s The Penguin. The 48-year-old has done a great job portraying the character of Oswald Cobblepot in the episodes that have come out so far and when he debuted with this role in The Batman (2022) alongside Robert Pattinson, who made his first appearance as Bruce Wayne.

Over the years, Farrell developed a reputation for being one of the better crime-action stars in the industry as well, notching roles in films such as Total Recall, True Detective, London Boulevard, and more. Interestingly, Farrell himself has dealt with legal authorities as a teenager, a situation that would have had him behind bars.

I’ve been dreading this upcoming remake of The Running Man Paramount Pictures is pushing through. I love how 80s-gritty and incredibly campy the 1987 original starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is, and there’s absolutely no chance a newer version can capture any of that again. For similar reasons I groan whenever I flip through the YouTube TV schedule and see Total Recall showing — but it’s the remake. Arnold or nothing! Today Paramount announced a definitive date for the release of the new Running Man: November 21, 2025. THR broke the news. Glen Powell, who just starred in Twisters, will play its central character, with Katy O’Brien co-starring. Edgar Wright is directing the film. The thing about the 1987 Running Man is that it’s based on a Stephen King novel (that he originally published under the pseudonym “Richard Bachman”) but it took a Lot of liberties with the story. In the movie,...

Relationships are hard to manage but it gets even harder if one is constantly under the spotlight. Star couple Justin Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel have been through a lot throughout their decade-long marriage.
Recent news of the singer’s arrest on charges of driving while intoxicated has put a lot of stress on his personal life. According to an inside source, Biel is allegedly likely to walk out if her husband doesn’t get it together. The singer had previously stepped out on their marriage but apologized for it. This might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back since, allegedly, his married life is barely hanging on.

Justin Timberlake is a big name in the music industry, but the singer had recently made the headlines for misconduct. The SexyBack singer got arrested on 17 June for drinking and driving, but it did not end there.

Take some ingredients and just throw them together. Take a block of butter and stick it in a bowl, pour some wine and vinegar on top, drop in a shallot and microwave. Doesn't sound very appetising? Combined in the right way those ingredients form a deliciously rich sauce. In Nikita (aka La Femme Nikita) Luc Besson takes a quirky romantic comedy and blends in crime, espionage and a touch of Nouvelle Vague. What he serves up is cinema beurre blanc. Contemporate with Nikita, the most memorable action movies also cooked with unconventional ingredients, Die Hard, McTiernan's heartwarming story of family reunion, and Verhoeven's examination of the boundary between real and imagined self, Total Recall. These films all spawned unpalatable remakes and spinoffs trying to recapture the taste of the original (only Die Hard: With A Vengeance had enough vinegar).

There was once a scenario that had Bryan Cranston and Colin Farrell featured on the same set. Back in 2012, a movie named Total Recall came out, a remake of the original film that was released in 1990. Farrel played the lead role, Carl Hauser while Cranston took on the role of “the bad guy” Chancellor Vilos Cohaagen.

The film wasn’t entirely a success as it lacked a lot of what made the 1990 release a success. But it was the start of a bond that Farrell and Cranston still cherish to this day. While the two are good friends, only one instance had Cranston question their entire friendship.

Remakes get a bad rap, and frankly it’s sometimes deserved. At their worst, remakes can be pointless exercises in flattening an interesting film into something broader and less singular. Whether it’s a shot-for-shot remake like Gus Van Sant’s notorious “Psycho” redux or a misguided switch up like the execrable 2012 “Total Recall,” many remakes offer nothing of value.
These issues are often only magnified when an American director decides to put their own spin on a film that originated from outside the states. From overly sentimental mush like “Coda” or “The Upside” to dismal J-horror remakes like “Apartment 1303 3D” (remember that? No we didn’t either) to Will Ferrell starring in a broad comedic take on “Force Majeure” called “Downhill,” these international remakes often have nothing to offer compared to their originator except for putting the story in English. It brings to mind Bong Joon-ho’s famous...

Nothing destroys a happy mood like watching a spoiler-filled movie trailer. Last month, someone posted a short TV spot for "Alien: Romulus" that revealed the xenomorph nest/hive that appears in the third act -- a secret nugget that would have been thrilling to see on IMAX during my first viewing rather than on a tiny iPhone screen.
Still, despite complaints from fans, studios and marketing companies continually pack include essential plot twists, third-act surprises, and money shots in trailers, anything to fill seats on opening weekend. I get it! Hollywood is a business. However, this questionable approach too often destroys first-time viewings of movies, dampening their impact for viewers who were likely sold on a product after a simple minute-long teaser. But I digress.
Remarkably, this trend has been around for a while. Studios have spoiled movies since the dawn of cinema. Don't believe me? Check out this list...

Much like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, director Max Minghella‘s Shell explores the hells of aging in Hollywood with vibrant style and biting wit. That both employ body horror, harken back to golden eras of the industry, and screened at TIFF will further draw inevitable comparisons. Yet they couldn’t be further removed in just about every way. While Shell centers around an aging actor who embarks on a risky beauty regimen in a desperate bid to retain relevancy, Minghella opts to use it as a vehicle to craft an escapist love letter to ’90s cinema.

Some movies should just be left alone. The industry recently remade the cult classic The Crow and nobody’s happy about that. The director of the first movie isn’t pulling any punches on this one. He revealed why he believes that the original movie didn’t need to be regurgitated by the Hollywood machine.
The director of ‘The Crow’ said the remake isn’t even a cash-grab
Alex Proyas is a film director who became known for cult classic science fiction films like Dark City, Knowing, and I, Robot. He is known for his keen visual sense, which has often been informed by film noir. His biggest film was probably The Crow starring Brandon Lee. Hollywood recently remade the film with Bill Skarsgård. Nobody was asking for this remake, least of all Proyas.
On his Facebook, the director roasted the intentions behind the remake and its box office performance.

Don’t read this article if you would like to watch Deadpool & Wolverine or Alien: Romulus completely unsullied. Or Total Recall. Or Lord of the Rings. In fact, please go away now!
Trailers have been responsible for ruining a whole lot of movies. More than three decades ago, if you happened to be watching Paul Verhoeven’s classic sci-fi romp Total Recall but had already seen the promo material, you probably wouldn’t have been particularly shocked at the moment when memory-addled Arnold Schwarzenegger guns down his own wife and utters the immortal line: “Consider that a divorce.” Nor would you be surprised to note that Benny the Martian driver is really a mutant, that our hero was once much more than a lowly construction worker, or that Schwarzenegger does eventually release oxygen on to the surface of Mars in the film’s denouement.
That’s because all these...

Bob Odenkirk is set to return to the big screens with the sequel to his surprise hit Nobody from 2021, and fans couldn’t be more excited to have the Better Call Saul star back onscreen. Just like the first film, he will reportedly be reprising his iconic role of the mild-mannered family man cum former secret government assassin — a role he pulled off most impeccably.

Though this time, he has another special star power joining him to make this upcoming 2025-release-scheduled Nobody 2 absolutely explode: Sharon Stone. But while the second movie is yet to be shot and delivered to the big screens, fans are already so piqued with excitement and exhilaration that they have already started cooking for the third film in the series!

It was July 1994. The summer was sizzling. And so were cinemas. That’s truly no lie.
James Cameron’s action comedy flick “True Lies” opened in theaters on the 15th of the month, knocking “Forrest Gump” from the top of the box office chart in its second week. “True Lies” starred a pre-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a U.S. government spy whose occupation is unbeknownst to his own family. (They think that he’s a salesman.) Schwarzenegger was one of the biggest movie stars on the planet at the time, thanks to a string of recent successes including 1988’s “Twins,” 1990’s “Total Recall” and 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” While “True Lies” was judged favorably by most critics, it was the bodybuilder-turned-actor’s onscreen wife Jamie Lee Curtis who received the bulk of the praise. Her nice but naive character was undergoing a midlife crisis, and Curtis injected her...

Paul Verhoeven’s neo-noir outing with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas headlining the film was perhaps one of the most polarizing pieces of cinema of its time (and perhaps even today) which sundered the audience into opposing factions.

Jim Carrey has essayed a slew of iconic roles in his career as an actor. Known for his classic comic timing and panache for pulling his face into weird expressions, the actor seemed tailor-made for the role of Big Head, Dark Horse Comics’ most well-known supervillain. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a cherished part of the film industry for decades. His influence on the action-film genre cannot be put into words, revolutionizing how fighting movies are made through projects like The Terminator franchise, Predator, Commando, and Total Recall. While all of these works are iconic in their own right, many more roles helped pave the actor’s reputation in Hollywood.

There are few directors as willing to get as fully weird as Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, whose satirical, wildly over-the-top films are sometimes so ridiculous that they come around to being taken seriously again. After all, it's been nearly 30 years and people still don't understand that "Starship Troopers" is a satire about the dangers of fascism! Out of all of Verhoeven's films, however, nothing is as intensely weird as the 1990 science fiction classic "Total Recall," which follows a construction worker named Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who has the memory of an adventure on Mars implanted into his brain as a kind of virtual vacation, only to have the details of his supposedly fake adventure cross over into his reality. He ends up going to Mars to try and take out a tyrannical dictator, meeting up with all kinds of mutant Martians along the way, including one that's pretty impossible to...

Paul Verhoeven's 1990 film "Total Recall" takes place in the distant future of 2084. Mars has not only been colonized, but it has also fallen under the rule of an evil governor named Vilos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox). The planet is rich with a rare, valuable ore called turbinium, but mining it has caused widespread pollution and radiation. Many of the Martian citizens have mutated as a result, their bodies sprouting extra body parts or sporting unusual growths. In many cases, mutants are also mildly psychic. To combat Cohaagen's corruption, a Mutant Resistance has formed, led by the mysterious and difficult-to-find Kuato (Marshall Bell).
The protagonist of "Total Recall" is Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former agent for Cohaagen who had his memory erased and his identity changed. It takes a long while for Quaid to understand what happened to him, but he eventually discovers that he has to combat Cohaagen and help the Mutant Resistance.

Here are nine movies, including sci-fi classics and hidden gems, that are sure to leave you thinking.
1. The Thirteenth Floor, 1999
The Thirteenth Floor is one of the unsung masterpieces that had bad luck with its release date — around the same time as The Matrix. The plot is a complex multi-level detective story about a simulation in cyberspace.
The creator of the perfect VR system, Hannon Fuller, is murdered in his own office. All evidence points to his co-worker Douglas Hall. To find the killer and clear his reputation, Hall dives into virtual reality — a simulated Los Angeles of 1937, whose inhabitants are unaware of the artificiality of their origins.

Over the years, Colin Farrell has starred in many kinds of projects. Range is one of his greatest specialties, as he can go from playing complex emotional characters to action heroes and even The Penguin in The Batman. Despite this, there is one aspect of a movie that stays consistent across most genres and films; romance.

In 2012, he starred in the reboot of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic film, Total Recall. While the film did not do exceptionally well, there was one aspect during filming that made it especially difficult for Farrell.
His co-star, Kate Beckinsale, proved to be a particularly difficult actress to kiss because of one predisposition.

After a stellar 1989, the Hollywood box office of 1990 was expected to be even better – but the film industry got taught some tough lessons.
Browsing the worldwide box office charts for 1989, and many a major studio executive would have been stroking their chin with some degree of comfort. The same old was working. The new things were working. Everything was getting better. The Christmas party was clearly going to be on the impressive side.
What 1989 had proven, after all, was the growing feeling that big stuff worked too. Tim Burton’s Batman had firmly introduced the idea of the huge opening weekend at the box office, and that a movie could become a cultural phenomenon. That patrons would leave the cinema and promptly seek out the soundtrack, the computer game, the book, the T-shirt, the novelty undercrackers.
But it wasn’t just Batman. 1989 proved to Hollywood that, for the most part,...
