The original script was written with Winona Ryder in mind for the role of Sue Ellen Crandell. Justine Bateman was later cast as Sue Ellen but then left the project. Christina Applegate was cast after her Married with Children (1986) costar Ed O'Neill, who was friends with a producer of the film, gave her the script.
Sue Ellen "Swell" Crandell:
One of us has to get a job.
Kenny Crandell: Well I'm not gonna.
Sue Ellen "Swell" Crandell: Well we don't have a choice. We'll flip for it
Sue Ellen "Swell" Crandell: Mama Celeste face up, I go to work, Mama Celeste face down, we're selling carnations on a freeway off ramp.
When Sue Ellen and Bryan talk after he gives her and the kids a ride home, Kenny yells that Zach and Melissa are fighting over the last snowball. He says it's the last food in the house. The next morning, Swell pours a huge bowl of Cap'n Crunch for the kids to share.
The two groundskeepers for the cemetery stand over the Babysitters grave and comment how nice it was for her to leave them the money. The tombstone reads "Nice Old Lady inside who died of natural causes".
